It is invariably done in the larger cities as a matter of policy as well as patriotism, being deemed conducive to the interests of the city im bringing crowds of visitors from the ad- jacent country within the town, who by their presence, benefit tradesmen, hotel-keepers, and many others. Very few holidays are observed in this country, and no amusements for the people at the public expense, as in France, Germany, and Spaia. ee celebration of this, the most Ts event of our history, has been sadly neglected late , and unless something be done to awa- ken In the minds and hearts of the ple the ne- cessity of its observance in some form or other, ju the course of a few years the Fourth of July will come and go without remark. EXcuRsion To ARLINGTON.—Undoubtedly the most thoroughly enjoyable excursions of the sea- son, thus far—especially for ladies—have been those of our city Sunday Schools. Rowdies and hard cases give such affairs a wide berth, and thus the participators are left free to enjoy all the delights of such a rural trip, withont annoyance. The excursion of the First Baptist Church Sab- bath School to Arlington, on Thursday, June 25, promises to be a delightful trip, indeed.
