LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Crimtsat Court.—Judge Crawford’scharge to the grand jury yesterday had the following pas- sage, which should be learned by heart by every parent in the land : “ The shockin; lect of educating properly, according to Ctir pertieelar ctewmnaees. 3 large portion of the young of both sexes, with the certainty accompanying evil of the total want of training, is the great source of crime among us, as it is the world over. The habitual disreyard of restraint inthe United States, the licentious abuse and perversion of true liberty, which can- not exist, except under the constraint of law, is the prolitic parent of private misery and public offence, which, commencing in street brawls and riotous scenes. runs rapidly to the penitentiar: and it may be to an igneminions death. For ai the evils that must in the train of neglected education, of annoying night disturbances, and street rudeness, and swagger, parents and guard- ians have an awful account to settle. The — of young men that des@¥t their homes, especially after nightfall, for the companionship of those who, like themselves, have left the shelter of the domestic roof in search of guilty indulgence, are sowing seed whose product will inevitably be punishment and disgrace to themselves and mis- ery and dishonor to those connected with them by blood or alliance. The authority that could and ought to restrain them is not exercised, and those who allow the reins to fall losely from their grasp will find a day of reckoning ahead which they have reason to dread _*” ‘Theextract below has also at this time ; ‘* In addition to s) your attention may particular pertinency ial examinations, to which invoked, the public, I pre- sume, gentlemen, anticipates at your hands—but, whether it is expected or not. if is in my judg. ment your duty to make—a full inquiry into the true condition of things in this city on the first day of this month ou should ascertain the facts, and present them in an embodied form This, and f think nothing short of this, will or ought to satisfy the community. [Twill only far- ther remark on this orcasion that the laws must be maintained and enforced. and the rights of the eftizen under these laws, and the fair and full ex- ercisxe of them. without interference or hindrance from any quarter, must be protected by whatever legally authorized means are necessary for these purposes.”* {n the Court yesterday, after we went to press, the case of Lewls L. Burnett, charged with re- tailing spirituons liquors without a license, was submitted, and the Court fined the party $16 and costs. The Petit Jury was then dismissed till the opening of the Court this morning at 10 o'clock. - To-day, the case of the United States es. 5. Ridgeway and —— Ridgeway, charged with assault and battery on F. Eckioff, on the 16th of March last, was taken up, and was in prog-ess up to the time our report closed. Key for the United States, Maury and Wharton for nee. Tux River. —At the Long bridge, the boys are still engaged in sturgeon catching. Yesterday they canght I of these unwieldy fish, which were brought to the city market this morning for sale. ‘The preparations for pile driving at the Long bridge are being prosecuted with vigor ; the con- tractor, Mr. Church, expects to have the pile driver ina few days. This morning, a number of new hands were engaged to go on the work with a view to expedit the repairs. During the gust yesterday afternoon the electric fluid struck the house of Capt. S. Foukes near the steamboat wharf, running down the water spout and passing along the ground some two hundred feet expended its force on a pine stomp which was standing in an open space of ground, tearing it up by the roots aud ploughing up the earth for some distance around. (We hear that the light- wing also struck the house of Mr.C. M. Mauray on Third street. The amount of damage done was not ascertained ) At Riley's wharf, arrived schr. Mary Clotilda, feom White Point, with white gravel for WW. Campbell; sehr. Sarah Elizabeth. from Malta- Woman, with 60 cords of pine wood for Riley. At Magruder & Stone's wharf. sehr. Monte- zuma, from Philadelphia, with cargo of cooking coal for G_ L. Sheriff. Arrived at Alexandria. steamer Maryland, from Chesapeake City, with 24 boats loaded with Cum- berland coal in tow. The coal was all taken by a new coal company. (namie unknown,) to supply the trade along the line of the Chesapeake and Obio Canal. This new company have in con- templation the establishment of a coal depot at Point Lookout, if the repairs which are ing made on the canal should become successfully completed. The Maryland will leave Alexandria again to-day for Chesapeake City, to tow another tieet of the canal boats to Alexandria. The steamer Engineer, which has been hereto- fore mentioned as having gone to Alexandria for repairs, came up the river yesterday, and hauled up at the wharf of the steamboat company, where she will be newly painted and then taken to the Reappabannock to be used as heretofore stated ‘ne Mail Bost Company are about establishing a uew wharf at Quantico Point for the conve- hience of ngers. The - Guy” went to Georgetown to-day to load with four for Cazenove, dealer, in Alexandria. The «+ Collyer** goes on her usual trip to-day to Mount Vernon, with a cheerful-looking set of passengers Warer! Water!! Water '!!—This morning we were waited on by a delegation of ladiex, housekeepers on Pennsylvania avenue, who rely on the avenue pumps between Ninth and Thir- teenth streets p as the supply of water necessary for their families, to bey us to beseech the proper authorities to cause the said pumps at once to be put inorder. They say that the pump at Patter- son’s comer gives precions little water with very hard pumping ; that the Ninth and C streets (cor- ner) emits offensive water; that the pump at the southwest corner of Pennsylvania avenue and Tenth street has been broken and next to use- less for two years past; that the pump at the northeast coraer of the intersection of the said streets won't yield water; and that the puinp be- fore our (Star office) door is as dry as 2 bone v Tepresent the most ious part of the fell mane know weil that their complaints ai well founded. Itistheduty of the Commissioner at once tocure these evils, and of the police to keep a sharp lookout for all who are disposed to injure sack public necessities. CULTIVATION OF THE PorpuLaR Taste —We never pass Markriter’s windows on Seventh street, without a glance and a pause, to note the almost inevitably something new therein displayed. in the way of pictures, which from their intrinsic merit are worth a position in the finest house, and et are in price not beyond the reach of the house- Loe of the most moderate circumstances. In- tinitely better are good engravings, mounted and varnished in this style, than more pretentious and costly oil paintings. Such pictures as the “ But- terfly Chase,’ “* Bubble Blowing,”’ “My New s,"" «Cold Weather,’’ while they are of the bighest order of design and exeention, are also of that alar-character which makes them at- tractive to even the uneducated eye. Ma¥kriter’s place is just above Odd Fellow’s Hall, and we advise all lovers of the fine arts to make a pause in passing. Tur Gametive Fraternity of this city would do well to keep in memory certain passages in the history of the'city of Vicksburg, if they havea care for their personal well-being. Itseems rather dificult in Wasbinzton city to bring jus- tice to bear on them, but they may yet “ get the hang of the thing ;’’ most expecially if they age? their scoundrelism so unblushingly in the e of day. Within the last week, we bave heard of at least two instances where respectable young ladies in passing along Pennsylvania avenue were subjected to grow insult from the biack-legs, who are wont to sun themselves in front of their dens of an afternoon. Tae New Carnoric Cuvacn, intended to be butlt by the Society of Jesuits is to be commenced immediately. The contractors are, P. Gallant, carpenter. and John MeCullom, bricklayer. The xround is located between First and North Capi- tol. and H and [ streets, and was presented by the venerable Ambrose Lynch, for the purpose of erecting upon it a church and a male orphan asylum oe building of the church is in charge of the Rev. B_ Villiger, S. J. A fine plan for this church edifice has, we learn, heen prepared by a member of the order in George- town. A Rare Cuayce.—The neat and comfortable little house and lot on Thirteenth street (west side) between Pennsylvania avenue and Datreet— to be sold by McGuire at auction on Friday next— (see advertisement in another column)—affords a chance for an investment of a moderate sum not often to be met with The house is well arranged and comfortable, will always command a pune- taal tenant, and is situated in the most desirable part of rity for a residenee of a person who necessarily be much about its business cen- Inbecat Taxixo —Last night, a Mrs. Spring- man was arrested by Officer Cooper, on the oath of Wilhelm Mertz, who charged her with seizing fim in the street and taking his gold watch from hus pocket. The lady was taken before Justice Smith. and admitted that she caught bim and took bis wateb, but that she was angry and took it to make him pay his board bill. She re- tarned the watch and gave security to keep the Peace Ksow!nxe Pigs. —The contractor for the remo- val of slops in the Fifth Ward, is winning gold- en opinions from all sorts of persons by his energy nding out bis carts at an early r in the ting, aud always in a condition to rent kage Most folks are snugly in bed when the «trts are ou their rounds, bat not so the pigs of the Ward, who are out betimes, ‘+ waiting for the Wwagon.** and who follow the vehicle snuiting the savory odors, and squealing out su teations for something more ‘setetantial. az "Any enigma or puzzle designed ** Roperic for our cot; Jution,.. Braypeta anp Mr. Crutcurrr Top- ring Our THE National Moxument.”*—Under this head the New York Herald hasa serio-comic article, which reads amazingly as though from the pen of G. B. Wallis, (“The Doctor,"’) in which, after alluding to the report that Dr Brandreth. with bis aloes and yamboge, had come to the rescue, and that ‘another public spirited adopted citizen—a resident of Washing- ton, of the name of Crutchett—has lately pur- chased all the standing timber around the tomb of Washington. at Mount Vernon, with a view of converting it into money for this same Washington monument,’ it is argued that this monumental association of Brandreth and Crutchett is mighty apropos in various points of view. ‘* Brandreth’s pills are rather a weakening article of diet, and | the consumption necessary to raise forty thousand dollars a year will probably create a market for | at least forty thousand walkingsticks. And thus, in the tinal completion of the monument. the sur- mounting pill box should be crossed with two corresponding walking sticks, just as the coflin of a soldier is crossed with two swords, or after the fashion of that impressive symbol of the skull crossed with the two thigh bones. “It was the pirouetting of Fanny Elssier that topped out the Bunker Hill monuinent. Why, then, should not the national monument to Washi- ington be topped out with Brandieth’s pills and Crutchett’s walking sticks ?"" The place is represented as very healthy; there had been but one doctor in the neighborhood, and he was forced to go farming to get something to eat.
