_EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY ......0000-04- .June 13, 1857. " ‘THE WEESLY STAR. Our weekly issue of this date has a thrilling | tale of frontier life, “The Outpost deeply interesting one entitled ‘The Coquette,” and a third styled The Oriental Merchant.”’ Among the practical brilliants we may enume- rate “The Old Mill;’’ the comical “ Address to the American Flag”’ in the ‘ Pheenix’ vein; «The Wife to the Wooer;”’ “The Cherry Tree;”’ and a beautiful poetical tribute to the late Dr. Charles S. Frailey. On the inside will be found a ceries of graphic, (we take the liberty of say- ing in the absence of the editor to-day.) piquant and every way readable editorial letters from the Great West, indited “by steam,” and naturally of the “‘go-ahead’’ order. In the local columns is a description of an interesting visit to Clark Mills’ studio; more details of the election riots; an article showing how lager beer is made; City and Government improvements items; something about the Navy Yard; the Washington Horticultural Society; the Wheat Crop; {the Marine Barracks; with no end of spicy bits of things. Besides all this, there are ten columns of fresh Washington News and Gossip; personal and political items; late foreign and domestic intelligence ; droll sketches ; val- uable receipts, and a great amount of miscel- laneous general information. Price for single numbers only 3 cents, in and from market, obtaining the material for knocking up a shelter, tog dc. = At Joliet, forty mites south and west of Chi- | cago, the road on which we have"been coursing enters the track of the Rock Island and Chicago road, (forty miles out from Chieago,) and also by another branch strikes direotly east, for a point on the Michigan Central Railroad—also forty miles out from Chicago. Ere reaching Joliet, I saw laying out in the prairie a boulder of rock of many tons burden, dropped there from a floating iceberg, no one knows how many centuries ago. ‘It is termed “the Lost Rock ;”” and, as science has so clearly demonstrated, could have got there in no other way. Of course it is one of the great curiosities of the country, and is pointed out as such to all travellers, though, like myself, they may have come from a region where boulders, evidently thus deposi- ted are met at every turn. Joliet is apparently the creation of the Rock Island Railroad’s busi- ness. That is to say, its rapid improvement of late years is. Itis situated on the rise of a ridge where the delta over which we had so long coursed terminates. This ridge rises gen- erally abruptly to the apparent height of from forty or fifty feet, and stretches away as far as the eye can reach. I am told that from its apex the prairie runs back ad infinitum at the same higher level: and I saw that, from the junction, the Rock Island road gradually climbs up to its higher elevation, instead of diving into the hill as though it were a mere ridge. The country between Joliet and Chicago is more diversified than that over whieh we had travelled to-day, having more marshes and Tue Nava, Courts or Ixguiny.—In Court No. 1 the case Of ex-Lt.
