LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tux Amexicas Hoox anv Lapper Comrayt bad everything their own way yesterday, on their down-river excursion. The air was positively delicious after the rains, and the river scenery, through the start given to vegetation by these same rains, Was never more bewitching. The large com- pany was thus predis) d to be Leger With- ers’s band was there to keep up the spirit of the eccasion; and President Thompson was about, indefatigably bent upon filling up any possible gup in the enjoyments of the day. So the excur- sion was just naturally bound to prosper, and pros- peritdid. At the White House there was p. ty of dancing, an entertainment to which a g many of the young folks ‘+ did most seriously in- cline; while the non-dancers enjoyed them- selves with quite as much Zest swingi and singing in the grove, hunting shells on the ch or wild flowers in the forest, and a large sprinkli of the excursionists, seated on logs, were edited spectators of the seine-hauling operations of our fiend Burke, especially about six o'clock in the afternoon. when an unexpectedly large haul (for the season) brought some six or seven hundred shad to shore. with herrings and miscellaneous fish to match. Then pd Sue went to the dining-room and took of some cooked shad served up by Se! Attempt to Ros.—Last night, Robert Mor- row's exebange office, on Peunsyivania avenue, | between Sixth and Seventh streets. was entered by thieves, who endeavored to break into the iron safe. They managed to cut a heavy lock from the outside of the safe. but failed to undo the inner lock. ‘The desk was ransacked, but nothing was taken. The systematic manner in which they soceeded indicates 2 thorough knowledge of the business. A fine, new silk handkerchief was left banging before the window, where it had been placed to prevent the light from being seen in the street; the filings of the lock, a small bottle con- taining sweet oil, and a quantity of singular-look- ing earthy substance, were found on the floor. ‘The robbers were evidently after money only, for in the desk were a money scale and a valuable revolver, which they left untouched. Had they succeeded in getting into the safe, they would have got nothing but a few pennies, as Mr. Mor- overed, has never left money at his office. The night before. the cellar of the house, occu- ied by a fruit dealer, was entered, and probably it was intended then to work into the office. All they obtained from the fruit cellar were a few oranges Navy Yarp Matrexs.—An oder has been lately issued by the President for an addition to | the marine force at various stations of 240 privates | and officers. This gives a total of 10 tons per week. Each ton of eoal produces about 20,000 cubic feet of gas, which, in one day’s manufac- ture, amounts to 600,000 cubic feet. The amount per, week is according to this, 4,200,000 cuble feet, which is consumed as fast as made. The number of men em for the com is 38, and they receive fra aryh S175 peal for their labor. ‘Tbe cost in material and manufac- ture per week amounts to at least $1,900, and is ee more than that; perhaps $2,000 to $2,500 per wee! The company receive nearly all the coal used by them in the manufacture of from Port Waithail, Virginia. This is considered the best coal for the pur) of making gas. The English bituminous coal which is partly used by the com- pany, is preferred to the native eoal. ne poem of English coal will produce five cubic gas, while the same amount of Port Walthall! material will produce only three and a half enbic feet. The quality of the gas from the former is also considered superior to that obtained from the native coal. River News.—Several vessels have arrived with lumber for the mills on the canal. We know of but one vessel which comes into and bailing from New ‘brings stone some ten days since, at the wharf of Messrs. Sils- bee & Ridyley. This brig, we should think, is totally unfit for any such purpose as that hinted at in the before-mentioned paragraph, as she is said to bea very sluggish and slow sailer under the mest favorable circumstances. It was said by some of the captains about our wharves yes- terday afternoon that they had been informed that she was to be fitted up to take a cargo of stock cattle or horses to Cuba. If this be the fact, and if she is the same vessel alluded to in the Star, the heavy hammering on board can easily be ac- counted for A few days more. and we suppose the dull mo- notony which has brooded over us for some time, will be broken off for a while.
