LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tux Brcx-nozx Cnair.—On Saturday, the formal ceremony of the presentation of the Cali- fornia buck-horn chair to President Buchanan, took place in the East room in the presence of a and interested audience, amongst which we ilvery locks of ex-Senator Dick nson, k . Seth Kinman, the «mighty hunter,’’ of Cali- fornia, whose prowess and ingenuity have achieved the chair, was, of course, the “observed of ali observers"? In his hand he bore the famous rifle “Old Tom.’ with which he killed those thir- teen deer whose spreading antlers go to the compo- sition of this unique work. is a fine-looking specimen of the genus homo, being upwards of six feet in height and straight as pines of his well-loved for- | His face is ornamented with a full and flow- beard, giving him an air of dom countenance ; we would trust Seth with our life on thateyealone. It expresses true nobleness of character, and the ample retlective developments upon his forehead show him to be a man of no ordinary stamp. On the entrance of the President, Mr. Kinman was introduced to him by Hon. Mr. Denver, of California. 3 Mr. Kinman then addressed the President in simple, straight-forward backwoods style, but with much appropriateness of language, giving somewhat of his personal history, and the history of the chair. The President was evidently impressed by the frank, sincere manner of the hunter, and expressed. as much in his kindly reply. General Denver then intreduced to the Presi- alent Dr. O. M_ Wozencroft, of California, whose address we find repozted in full in the Union, as follows : Mr. President: In presenting this chair for your -acceptance, you will concur with us that it is not -of sufficient intrinsic value to place it urmder the constitutional prohibition, and yet it may havea relative valne—a value which would be difficult to compute by any ordinary rules of appraisement —as a work of ingenuity and natural art, if we may use the expression, {t mustclaim your admi- Tation. Kinman, who has placed those antlers in their present peealiar and beautiful coaptation, is one of that class of men who are enzaged in opening the way for the advancing tide of civili- zation and our republican institutions. His la- bers, however, have been terminated by a natural barrier—the Pacific ocean has intervened to check bis progress and terminate his labors; and now be has cetarned by the much-dreaded ocean route in order to present the tinal fruits of his labors in this his handiwork, which may justly be received itional evideuce of the fact that necessity i+ the parent of invention, and as illustrative of the life of the pioneer, but as typical of our past, present, and future national history.
