i —_ = LT a a LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tue River —The river, in consequence of the late rains, is taking arise, and the current tuns with considerably increased velocity. The statements made in this paper yesterday, with regard to the winding up of the fishing ope- tions on the lower river, are this morning con- ined by Mr. Force, the owner of the Tent \- tt er last might. He states that Capt. Gibson, of the Stoney Point landings, was to have cut out yesterday. “Mr. proce conah Se a Be rc terday, 1,000 sl a 0 bd 3 That the heavy current in the river to-day will break up the Negro borer ly t tole The steamer Guy brought up only twenty of shad yesterday, Yehich were taken by the Bal- timore hucksters. The above twenty tubs com- rises pretty much all the fish received at Alex- andria yesterday. Messrs. Bird & Milburn, of Washington, have put up 125 bbls. of shad and 25 bbls. of herring, nich await inspection. Mr. Barton, of Alex- andria, has also put up from 12 to20 bbls. of shad, and these comprise all the salt fish in the Wash- ington and Alexandria markets. No arrivals of fish at Alexandria terday evening, nor this morning. The nominal price shad yesterday was $11a$11.50, and herring S150. An upward-bound schooner was driven ashore at bigh tide near the Bluff, below Alexandria, yesterday ; name and destination unknown. The Guy went down in order to tow her off but failed to do so. The schooner A. V.. Mott Bedel line, is due at Magruder & Stone’s.wharf. She should have reached Washington on Tuesday last, bat has probably been detained by the late strong north- east winds. A lumber schooner went up the Washington channel yesterday, and remains in the river near the Seventeenth street wharf. _ Arrived at Riley's wharf, scht Wm. L. Monta- gue, je., Capt. DH. Traverse, from Charleston, 3. C., with $1,300 feet of lumber, consigned to Fitzhagh Coyle & Brother. At same wharf, schr Robert Wilber, Capt. Winfield, with pine wood ; not consigned. Tue Power or Stzam.—The contrast between steam and hand labor is admirably shown by the amount of heavy work effected every day at the workshops adjacent to, and connected with, the various mechanical departments of the Capitol Extension. ‘ - A twenty-five horse power steam engine, regu- lated by an engineer and fireman, and which con- sumes an averaze amount of one and one-quarter tons of Cumberland coal = diem, drives the following amount of machinery, viz: In the iron-finishing department three tarning lathes of ordinary size, one large double-action boring machine, and four to five iron boring and planing machines. It also furnishes wind for the supply of forty blacksmith’s forges, and an ordinary-sized trip hammer for heavy forging. In the stone-cutting department the same en- gine drives an imimense stone-turning lathe, which turns out every fourteen days one of the beautifal Coriuthian columns designed for the west front of the Post Office extension. and which if performed by hand wonld occupy a workman frem two to three months in its accomplishment. Also in this department one hundred and fifty stone saws are driven by this engine, as well as a large iron circular rubbing bed for Epraee up the surface of plaim stone work. In the wood- work department, two large circular saws, two morticing machines, and one turning lathe are also driven by this engine, which performs the work of an army of giants; keeps some eight: hands in the stone cutting, forging, carpenter machine or ee constantly busy, and is runata cost of less than $10 per diem. Tue New Horrictiturat Society held a stated meeting at Kelly's school room last even. ing In the absence of the presiding officer, Mr. Joshua Pierce was called to the chair Messrs. Thos. C. Connolly. Sam’l V. Noyes and Heory Hardy were elected Lanetier members. The committee charged with the duty of m: the hi ing celiminary arrangements for the coming ex- tion of the ee reported a plan of opera- *. naming the various articles to which it was considered proper to attach premiums and recom- pepo, by Sepie of June as a suitable time for the exhibition. Some discussion arose upon the fast point, and it being deemed inexpedient to hold the exhibition at so Jate a date, the 16th of June was finally fixed upon for the opening day. The propriety of selecting judges outside of the Society, urged by the committee, wax, after some debate, aequiesced in. The — of the committee was then accepted. The exhibition of the Society is to be heid on the Wth, 17th and 16th days of June. Tue Concert To-Nicut.—Everybody’s atten- tion (lovers of children and of good music espe- pecially) is invited to the concert to be given to-night by the Fourth District School (Miss Milburn’s) and which is to come off under the direction of one of our most successful teachers, Mr. F. Glenroy. In speaking of the Concert of the First and Sec- ond District Schools, led by Mr. Daniel, we had eecasion to notice the remarkable fact that the performers were not selected from these schools, out were the schools themselves. The same is true in oa A Tespect of the per- formers to-night, and is to our mind the most striking proof not only of the ability of the teach- ers but of the capability of all children to become roficient in vocal music, if patiently trained and en at an early age. We deem the performances of these children little less than wonderful under the circumstances and are confident that every listener to-night will agree with us in so thinking. A WELL-To-vo BecGar.—The impositions by the professional lazzaroni who infest the side- walks were glaringly exposed yesterday in the case of a stout, healthy-looking man, who, with arm in sling, has been perambulating the city soliciting alms. A police officer yesterday, suspecting from the fellow’s appearance that he was an impostor. commenced an investigation, which the stu dy beguar resented by abusive language, which he followed up by using the lame arm vigorously in resisting an arrest. He was taken before Jus- tice Smith, who imposed a fine upon him. An old woman came forward and claimed the impgs- tor as her husband ; and ascertaining the amonnt of the fine, she repaired to one of the city banks, drew the money to pay the fine, and released him. Look out for them. ATTEMPT AT Ivezxpianism.—Tuesday night, some villain entered the basement of Mrs. Stelle’s boarding-house on Missouri avenue, near Pour- and-a-half street, and being unable to make his way through into the main building, set fire to the woodwork under the stairs and left. One of the boarders was aroused in the night by what he thought the smell of gas, but proceeding to examine, he found fire just making ts appearance under the door of the Poe ar entry. iene fire was extinguished, and a serious conflagration prevented.
