LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. River News.—From the river this morning we have nothing of importance. The reports from our upper river fish landings are more favorable. At Jackson city landing on Saturday, Mr. Hunt- er, the proprietor, made, on one tide, a haul @f 1,900 shad, and between four and five thowand herring, - Six miles below Alexandria, at Tent landing; on Saturday last, the proprietor, Mr. Hall, reports a haul, at one tide, of 3,000 shad, and between forty and fifty thousand herring. news from Alexandria is still di: - ing. It is anticipated that some twenty of the owners will «cut out’ to-day. There are no ar- rivals of fish to note. Yesterday and this morn- ing the sales have been principally to country ‘opie, who were paying from $10 25 to $10 75 for shad. and $9 50 for herring. It was reported that shad were up to $13 yesterday, but afterward contradicted. Col. Dix arrived in the Columbia last night, from Piney Point, with news confirmatory of the previous statements about the failure of the fish- eries. He states that the season is the worst for many years. The Colone! brought up the first drum of the season, weighing 45 Ibs., which was taken by his men ina seine. He ented the fish to Marshal Brown, Esq., and no doubt the frequenters of the *- marble palace”* will appreci- ate the gift. Schr. Mott Bedell. Capt. Thompson, hasarrived at Richey’s wharf. Chaplin was released on bail given here by David A. Hall. Selby Parker, and Blanchard, printer of the National Era, in the sum of $6.00. But Chaplin was subsequently arrested in Maryland, and was there released on bail in the sam of £20 woo. To secure the bail in this city, the sum $5,000 was placed in the hands of David A. Hal Bat this sum was paid over by him for the pa | of mevting the demand for the sureties in Maryland. After the bail here had been forfeited the abolition friends of Chaplin paid a Portion of the amount, and promised to raise the Test, but never did it. “The Govermment levied two or three years azo oa Blanchaid’s printing materials, and David A. Hall's lots, and xciby Parker's fancy zoods store, for the balance due, but indulged them. f-om time to time, while they endeavored to induce Blan- chard’s friends to make good their promise-. Re- cently. Mr. Selby Parker, a very worthy citizen, becomi embarrassed, made a deed of trust upon his Mock in trade in favor of his New York creditors. A sale commenced. the day before yes- terday. of his zoods under this deed. But pend- ing this, the United States Marshal stepped in, with bis prior claim, under an unsatisfied execu. tion, and swept off everything for the Govern- ment. The debt due was two thousand dollars, and the property sold for enough to cover this sum and the heavy expenses. “ The Abolitionists must have lost some of their zeal in the cause, when they thus fail to redeem their most positive engagements, with men not of their 'y, and who are not as rich as they, but actually poorer.’ Fings.—Yesterday morning, between 6 and 7 o'clock, tire was discovered in the upper story of 2 brick dwelling on G street, opposite the Patent Office, belonging to Mr. Shanks and occupied by Mr. W. Mitchell. The alarm was promptly iven, and ina very short time the companies of the fire department were on the ground, and by their systematic efforts saved the Property from destruction. The roof of the house only was burnt, though some of the furniture was injured by hasty retnoval and the water from the engines. Mr. Jos. SEVERE AccipENT —On Friday last, at Port Point, on the Potomac, while a free negro named John Wheeler, in the employ of Captain Hitch, lumber merchant. was employed in loadin; ga ves- sel with lumber for the Rovtoix Navy Yard, a heavy piece of timber fell upon him crushinz his thigh in a frizhtful manner. ‘There was no phy- sician near the Use who dared to undertake am- utation, and he wax accordingly brought to ashington, where he arrived this morning tobe taken to his home in Baltimore. The officers of the rfilroad refused to let him 0 over the road because he had not his free papers with him. J. Magruder, in the chair. a On motion, the reading of the minutes of t! last convention was dispensed with, and the Chair was instructed to appoint the necessary commit- toes for the present convention. Mr mavgoion ¢ the inauspicious weather the at- tendence was very good. The President then introduced Prof. er. Root, of New_York, to the convention as - ductor. Mr. R. made a few pleasant remarks appropriate to the occasion, and proposed, as a prelimi step to ascertain the quality of mate- rial present, to spend the morning in practice. Accordingly, a number of familiar old tunes were sung under his direction. During the 7 tice, Mer gave several examples of quality of tone, showing a professional ki of no or- dinary character. Mr. R. has a baritone voice of unusual sweetness and power,’ and a manner at once pleasant and simple. Sessions of the Convention will be free to all who choose to attend. and people who are inter- ested in the subject of musical education will find the Convention a place of desirable resort during the present week. The Convention will be in session to-night, at half-past seven o’clock. Daxcrrovs Lunatic.—Last night, a young man named Vincent Germon, was taken to the guard house, for a desperate assault on his mother, and as a dangerous lunatic. His brother-in-law, Mr. Wm. Hutton, went to assist Mrs. Germon, and was seized by the throat by the unfortunate luwatic and choked till he was senseless. Lueki- ly he recovered at a moment when Germon’s gmp was loosened, and by hard work secured nis assailant. German has been in the Insane Asylum, and was discharged a short time ago ap- parently much improved. Yesterday he was Ae served to be absent minded, and was seen to pro- vide himself with a hammer and hatchet. Pits circumstance caused the family to watch his movements. He was sent to jail until other ar- rangements can be made for him. Muxpgr’s Granp May Batt will positively come off to-night, and the young folks who were so grievously disappointed on Friday night by the storm can don their ball-room costumes with the certainty of having occasion to use them. Weare informed by a gentleman who has w: nessed some of the rehearsals that the dances formed by Prof. Munder’s r- pupils are astonishing- ly well done, and the opinion is ex spore by him 1 that the exhibition of to-night wi surpass any- thing ever seen in Washington. Especially won- derful is the proficiency exhibited by children the most diminutive in size. We call attention to the programme offered by Munder to-night, as affording an indication of the attractiveness of the exhibition. Macutxe Sewixc.—We call attention to the advertisement in another column of machine sew- ing, on D strect, near Ninth. In passing along D. street the operators in this establishment can be seen working like bees, performing their tasks with rapidity, but at the same time in a most workmanlike manner. ‘The proprietor has found it necessary to increase his force in consequence of the demand for his manufactured work, and has just added five more machines, and has yet two more on the way. Fine work, shirts, &c., can now be made at 39 hours notice. It is in con. templation to move this establishment to the tine brown stone building of Clagett’s, opposite Gid- eon’s printing ottice. Mr. Evitor: Having been invited to witness an exhibition of fancy dances by the scholars of Mr. Gazynski, at Temperance Hall, on Tuesday evening, I attended, and was indeed surprised to see how elegantly the numerous pieces -were dunced. A medley was danced by Misys V 2 which I am sure could not be excelled by any one. The graceful Miss P- danced a piece which done her great credit. Mr. Gazynski is an piers aap gentleman, and has succeeded wonderfully for one who has been with us for so short atime. I hear that he intends giving his May ball on Tuesday night, and I would advise all who wish to enjoy themselves to attend. Mr. G.and his estimable lady will do all in their power to make every one enjoy themselves. S. Suppen Deatn —Yesterday, a young woman, Miss Julia Driscoll, who lived with her mother on Thirteen-and-a-half near D street, was taken ill suddenly and died in a few moments. She re- turned Saturday evening from her place of em- ployment, complaining of her throat, and took some light medicines to relieve her. Between one two o'clock yesterday she was seized with convulsions and died before a Physician could be found. She was highly esteemed by her acquaintances. Fixe Pictcaes.—The New York Crayon, in its domestic art gossip, states that “ Mr.W. Hunt has executed a couple of lithograph drawings from two pictures painted by himself. One rep- resents the ‘ Parisian Violet Girl,’ and the other, we believe, is entitled ‘Savoyard.’ The former icture is at present in the exhibition at Wash- ngton. These drawings are charmingly executed in every respect. The Violet Girl is a gem.” Cixcurt Court.—This morning the court gave an opinion on the points of demurrer, argued by the counsel in the case of Jones vs. Dermott. A majority of the court (Judges Dunlop and Mor- sell) gave opinions overruling the demurrer of the defence, and his honor Judge Merrick sus- taining the demurrer. The case of course goes to the jury now on its merits. Usitep States Cases. —Wm. Lensemeier was arrested on Saturday for assaulting and beating Mrs. Rosa Fauth. He was taken before Justice Goddard and held to bail for his appearance at the Criminal Court.
