Gn mati of Mr. Smith, the Committee on Missions, was authorized to receive from the Southern Aid prea: the amount requisite for support of the gospel in the vacant churches. ev: Dr. Hamner, Secretary of the Southern Aid Society Society, spoke at some length on the subject, and promised all the aid it was possible for the society to affurd.and recommended that the Presbytery state the precise wants of the Com- iittee on Missions for the pur; specified. He recommended the ape het asa body, promptly to aseertain what they could do by their own ex- ections, and gave promise of the assistance of the | Fouthern Aid Society in furtherance of the plan spoken of. Ar. Editor: 1 have to-day, for the first time, seen an article in your paper of Friday last, (pur- apm Som be_an editorial.) under the head of 5 The Horse Boston Case,’’ which reads as fol- | JOWR : “The Horse Boston Case.—it will be recol- lected that not long since Justice Hollingshead held Samuel Strong, Robert Strong and John Mastin to bail for their a at the Crimi- nal Court, under a charge of conspiracy todefraad Clark Mills ovt of a model horse called ‘‘ Bos- ton"? The case went to the grand jury a short time since, and that body declined to find indict- ments against the accused. So the charge fs vir- | y dismissed. j *- As they stand, under the action of the magis- trate, accused (in the estimation of the public) of & Zrave erime, from which the refusal of the grand | to indict them relieves them, we feel it in- | rumbent on the Star to publish for them the fol- | lowing bill of sale and attidavits, tending to re- | eve them from the imputation.”* As this article was evidently intended by its author notonly to boister up the Strongs, but also to retleet upon myself, I fee! it right to make a | brief reply, that I may not be placed in a false tr tion before a community whose good opinion shall ever value highly. [t is not true, as stated | therein, that the Grand Jury declined to find in- 1 dictments against tne Strongs and Mastin, for a | me pa to defraud me he Grand Jury had fixed on a time for adjournment, before the cases were sent up, and the witnesses could not be pro- cured in time to enable them to act on them be- fore adjournment. I refer as well to the charges of obtaining money under false pretences from Williams & Everson, by the sale of the horse to them, as of a conspiracy to defraud myself. The statements of Samuel Strong and his coadjuto's ere false in every material particular. It is not true that Samuel Strong informed me or gave me any reason to believe that he wanted to purchase the horse for bis brother. He swore, at the ise trate’s, that he had not seen the horse since he sold him to his brother—yet the horse was ob- tained by Everson from Samuel Strong’s stable The statement that Samuel Stron; horse from me, and that I delivered possession of it to him by virtue of such purchase, is false. The statement that I never set up any claim to the borse while in Strong's possession is false. On the centrary, Samuel Strong always admitted my right, and repeatedly promised to bring him tome. His repeated faflures to comply with his promises convinced me that something was wrong. I therefore took the advice of counsel, and aeting under it, after much delay, trouble, and expense, finally traced the horse to Virginia, und obtained possession of him by legal process. How Mr. Strong ——— is not a question here—the courts will act upon that. It bought the | upon them by members of a rival com; = wholly unprovoked on their part. RY ican not if this be so; but we are certain that the re- spectable members of all the companies will see the necessity of lending no countenance to acts of lawlessness which may at any moment lead on to a terrible tragedy.
