Rumaging in all his pockets, he found nothing there but his cartridge-box ; but this he drew ont and offered it as a stake’ Whilst the dice were being shaken, it eudden- ly 8h: Richard that the soldier who held the stake was the same who hed bought the bottle-imp, and would, of course, through ite presence, be sure to win. He cried “ Stop!’* but too late; the dice was thrown, and Rich- ard lost. He rushed back to his tent in dee- pair. A comrade, who was some sober than he, took him by the arm, and acked him on the way if he bad more car- tridges in his tent. “No,’’ said Richard, ‘or I would havo played on” ** So you can when you’ve bought new ones,"” said the soldier ; ‘« for the commissioner comes to review us next month, and if be finds a soldier without cartridges, he has him shot.’’ ‘‘Next month!” cried Richard; “ well, before that time I shall have my pay, and buy new cartridges.’’ 86 they parted. and Richard proceeded to sleep off his intoxication. But ina little while he waz awoke by the voice of the corporal before the tent; ‘° Ho! to-morrow is the review; the commissioner will be in the camp by break of day.” Rich- ard was startled from hissleep. He thought of his cartrides, He called to his comrades in the tent to know if any one would lend to bim; but they abused him fora drunkard, and would notanswer. Then he searched his clothes. and found at last fi rthings.. With these he few from tent totent in the dark, trying to buy cartridges, but in vain, till he reached a tent where the voice that answered him with an imprecation was that of the soldier who had won hi3 cartridges. “Comrade,” said Richard, pleading!: “you or some one must help me. You piun- dered me once before, and yesterday you took my all from me. If the commissioner finds to-morrow that I have no cartridges, be will have me shot. You must give, or lend, or sell me some.”’ “Giving and lending I have forsworn,”’ said the soldier; but to quiet you, I will eend you cartridges. How much money have you ? ‘Five farthings,”’ answered Richard, ‘* Well,’’ said the other, “‘to show you that Lam a good comrade, there are five cartridges for your five farthings.”” The exchange was made, and Richard re- turned, to sleep till the morning The review took place, and all went well. But when the soldiers were again in cap, the evn burned intolerably through the tent canvas Richard’s comrades went to the can- teen, and he remained slone with empty peck- ets and a piece of ration-bread, faint and sick with yesterday’s coroute and to-day’s exer- tions *‘ Ah,”’ he thought, “if I had now but oneof allthe ducats I once lavished like a fool!’ Scarcely had he formed the wish, whet a bright new ducat lay in bie left hand. The thought of the bottle imp shot through bis mind, and imbittered his momentary joy atthe sight ot the piece of gold. Just then entered the comrade who had sold him the i “¥riend,’’ said he, with a troubled air, “the phial with the little imp init—you know I bought it in the wood from you—is missing. Have I, perchance, given it you unawares, foracartridge? I had wrapped it up in paper like them end laid it with my cartridges ”’ Richard sought anxiously in his rn = box, and in the first paper he unfolded, found the goblin creature. *: That 8 well,”’ said the soldier, ‘‘ I should have been sorry to have lost the thing, ugiy as it looks; it elways seems to me as if it brought me unusual luck at play. There, comrade, take your farthing again, and give me the creature.” Most eagerly did Richard consent to the transaction, and mit peer Bat all his peace was gone since he had again seen and handled the object of his terror. He threw from him the ducat he had just before sighed for, and at last the dread that the bottle-imp might still be lurking somewhere near, drove him outof the camp, and through the deepening evening, into the thickest forest shades, where, exhausted by terror and weariness, he sark upon the ground. “Qh.” said he panting, “‘ that I had but a water flask to quench my thirst!” and there stood a water-flask at his side. He-thought of the bottle imp—searched in his pocket—and feltitthere. ~ [TO BE CONTINUED IN OUR NEXT.] ————-08 A Trent Savines Baxx.—Harriet Wallace, a frugal factory girl, who hed nearly a hun- dred dollars deposited in the Lowell Saviogs Bank, bas just been permitted to draw her money, after a long and painful course of lit- getion. She commenced her deposits with $41, in 1845, and being about to leave the city temporarily, she employed a friend to take the money to the institution, and sign with her name the by laws; other deposits followed, but when the yoi lady came to get her money ont, in 1853, the treasurer re- tused todeliver it up without proof that the first depositor (the friend) was not tho real owner of the money. That young woman be- ing dead, and Miss Wallace being unable to give a bond of indemnity, the matter went to law, first in the Common Pleas, and then in the Supreme Court, and the clsim was sus- tained by both. Lhe bank now pays the de- posit with interest, and the cost of prosecution. An Exrexsitva Fawity.—It is often said in the Southern States that every Virginien who travels that way claims relationship with all the leading families of the Old Dominion. One who knows how extended the relations and kin are amongst the old families of Vir-- ginia is not surprised at the claim thus set up. © As an instance, we are most credibly inform- ed that a gentleman of Charlotte, a member of an old and highly respectable family of the South side of the James, and whose age does not exceed 60, numbers no less than five hun- dred nieces and nephews of his own blood, in- cluding those in every degree. Who can claim a larger number in hisfamily bounds?— Charlottesville Advocate, Intarestixe Retics —The San Francisco Bulletin gives the names of a large number of old vessels which have been broken up at that port and remarke: The histories connected with these old ves- sels would be highty interesting, some of them romantic, some sublime. One of them, a stance, the Cadmus, was the vessel in — tho patriot Lafayette came to America ae" famous visit. Another, the Plover, was fam- iliar to the world as the sbip which —-n the Northern seas through Bebrings straits in the great search after Sir John Franklin, and remained among those icy regions for four or five years.
