EVENING STAR. wo SHOULD 82 Lar? AT TEE Ovrice BT ‘Tescrs o'cuccs, M.; cTEERWuE TuEY MAY BOT APPEAR writ THE WERT Dar. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Wasarreton Arr Association Lacrurzs. The third lecture of the course, delivered by F. W. Lander, , on Saturday evening, at the hall connected with the gallery of this in- stitution, was attended by a full and highly appreciative audionce. The theme of the lecturer was “The aptitude of the American mind for the cultivation of the fine arts, which wastreated with marked ability, win- ning the hearty applause and a; ‘al of bis bearers. interest with which the anudi- ence listened to Mr. Lander might be attrit- papier the excellence ~ — enunciation, and to the power Lcongem sy him, in an eminent degree, of &: the attention by that inde- scrible m: tixm which is kno attribute of all natural orator course will bear perusal, and will as deeply interest the reader as it did the audieree — heard it raprees ‘a opening his discourse, the lecturer spoke of the nation as not hsving done much in the way of commemerative art. He said that upon this soil, poems were acted rather than writ- —— the es life = a ——— of the grand old prophecies of progress—here labor doce Pater nlatesot ee: erect, and talent and energy were devoted to other offices than those of commemoration, save as the footsteps of achievement, and the enduring forms of the actual were @ commemoration. Typical of America and her destinies, such forms stood about us, they confronted usin the dwelling and the pci eas Heart, soul and inspiration had been denied the American character; it was asserted that we were a practical people—shrowd, sordid and calculating Yet we were the most en- thusiastic, impulsive and generous people of the earth. Hospitality to foreign adventurers wasa mania of the populace. He cited the representative man as an illustration of the American character—endowed with allthe powers of the working inspiration, a thinker, s revealer, an actor; capable of conceiving and executing; he was neither shrewd, nor sharp, nor cold,—the apostle of the charity of his nation—in his own character he bad proved it to be possessed of beth heart and soul; and if practical and earnest, to be neither sordid, nor basely caleulating. Kane certainly could not be claimed as Ea- ropean. None might term him Anglo-Saxon; Bs se Teutonic, Celtic, or Norman. He was an American. Kane could not be denied to us. He was gone now ; but hisfame was, and ever would be, American. He had enough of the old Indian heroism to have died at the stake—not with torpid obstinacy, but thor- oughly awake in heart and devotion to the last—singing the death song of his nation With what shining deeds had be made his score of years immortal! In Mexico, the war rior; at home and abroad, the writer, the or- ator and the explorer. All this we knew, but could we not see too that he was the artist and the poet? Inspiration lurked in the brain,— creation sat by the hearth of the representa- tive man, whether the Shakspeare or the Fu!- ton. Kane had descended the crater ia his thirst for knowledge—a very Zanoni, ‘daring the grim dweller of the threshold’’—wrestling with the grim monsters that guard the unat- tainable. Quoting here the sublime verse of the 15th ebapter of Revelations, the orator said that the simple minded Prophet Kane, a repre- sentative man of the Working revelation, had “won the victory over the beast, and over his image, 4nd over his mask, and over the wanker a its name,’’ had seen the real fires of the northern skies beam over the fro- sen sea of glass; and, poet of heart, and soul, and inspiration, was one of the bards who should stand upon the sea of glass, mingled with fire with those having the harps of God. Out of this inspired faith—this trust in Di- vine apprehensions—which characterized the Awerican mind from the outset, the speaker ssid, should yet spring the greatest poets and painters ee sculptors that the world had ever known. We believe in the realization of the pro- heey, and bave rearcon also to believe that he | an himself will be numbered with those who shall wear the wreath of excellence in one department of the fine arts, as be al- ready wears that of eminent merit in practical Ecience. Tas Mxcnasics’ Ixstitote Far —Ex- President Pierce visited the Fair on Saturday, and expressed himself as much gratified by what he saw of the articles on exhibition The visits of the Sunday and Private Schools of the city this week will enhance the interest of the dsy time exhibitions, as no visitor can fail to enjoy the childish expressions of de- light manifested by such a hoet of juveniles. he question having been asked of us we would say that the remarkably fine likeness of Mayor Wood, of New York, with other pic- tures in the same panel, are rea//y photo- rapbic likenesses. They are by brady, of a York, and possess the sharpness, force and vitality of nature. When Mr Delane, editor in-chief of the London Times, was in New York he sat to Brady for a photograph, but did not get a copy of it until after his re- turn to London His note of acknowledgment epeaks in the warmest terms of it as a work of art and as a likeness, snd as having won the praise of the first amateurs in London. Tas Nationan Horst Di —The com- mittee of the Board of Health who made the recent examination of the National Hotel, inspecting every part of the building, and taking the testimony cf many witnesses on Thursday and Priday last, reported to the Board of health on Saturday evening las’. The uuanimous conclusion of the Board from the facts embraced in the report, is that the disease arises from a poisonous miasma gener- ated in the sewers of the house, which being taken in the lungs is absorbed and acts as a bleod poison, and thus is distributed through- outthe system All the pbysicians examined by the committee testified that no fatal care ok the disease has yet come under their cogui- zanoe The Board of Health are said to have adopted two resolutions, calling on the Corpo tation authorities at once to take into consid- eration the propriety of adopting some com prehensive ard thorough plan of sewerage for the city, de —_—_ Usitgp Stargs Porice Reports, (at the watch house,) before Justive Donn: Sunday, 22d—Hannah Wileon and Mary Ann Williams, colored, were arrested by watchmen Donnelly and Horneron the charge of Sighting. The exhibition of to day and tomorrow at Carusi’s Saloon, as they will leave the city for exhibition throughout the United States. Both panoramas will be unrolled this after- neon and evening, and to-morrow afternoon and evening. & Mr. Wu Wanper —The reader is referred to the advertisment of this gentleman, where- in it will be percieved he has taken a partner in his business. There are few older wood and coal dealers in Washington than Mr. Warder, and none who more invariably give entire satiefaction to all purchasers. Tne Wasbivgton correspondent of the Bal- timore American, speaking of the Washington Art Association Gallery, says: ‘Strange to re- late, itherto inevitable ‘portrait of a gen tlem as not yet appeared.’’ Ah, ‘3 ,”” you didn’t take a look ! Facse ALanws.—On Saturday night, and Sgain on Jast night, there were several false firealarms. Oge of them was occasioned by the burning of brash # short distance ip the Justice D: responded on the part of the Court, in paper fe of respect tort memory of the late Mr Lawrence. igh sry sesareny bac — eth a bigh ven and graced by a courtesy w made him sews mon acceptable to the bench and bar, and ever efficient in the ser- vice of his clients. He has fallen in the prime of life, and in the midst of his well earned fame and usefal- ness. We all mourn his loss, and deeply sym- thise in grief which has overwhelmed Bis afflicted family. The usual resolutions were adopted, and directed to be entered upon the minutes of the court. The court adjourned until Wednesday next. Crimtvat Covrr.—This Court was only in session to-day to receive reports from the Grand Jury. — Mr. Editor: As you ste one of the guar- dians of the public weal I would call your at- tention to the feebleness of the venerable ump on the corner of Twelfth street ard ew York avenue. For many months past the arm of this useful object of our neighbor- hood bas been powerless, uvable to produce its wonted contributions of the pure aqua for the relief of thirsty souls. The officers of the city have called semi-cccasionally upon the patient, grasped it kindly by the arm; but that arm, which once served in cooling the fevered tongue, now Eaves pessivent ey have examined its nose and body, and have Pronounced its affliction neither the catarrh or dropsy. We would recommend that it be taken to a water-cure establishment, and a more efficient body substituted in its place. March 23, 1857. A Susscriner. The judges pronounce it very good, and wish her much success It can be procured at the Fair, or at No. 339 G street between Eleventh and Twelfth srasts. Orrortunirr is the flower of time; and os the stock may remain when the flower is out off, so time may remain with us when oppor- tunity is gone forever There is still an op- portunity to buy books cheap, and obtain presents with them, at Philbrick’s Gift Book Store, under Dexter’s Hotel. That opportu- nity will soon be lost, as Philbrick will depart, and the place which knows him now will soon know him no more forever. Tae Washimcron Meparuiow Pex, noticed in our colamns a few weeks since as the great American prize pen, and the best pen in the world, bids fair to supercede ail other pens made in Earope or in this country. To all who have tried the Medailion Pen it has given Great satisfaction, and so great has been the demand for it that the agent, Mr. J.
