The Judge then adjourned the examination, requiring the children to be brought before him again on Monday, the 24 March, at 10 o'clock a. m. U. 8. Poricry Reront—Bofore Justice Donn : Mary Mann was arrested for committing a violent aseault and battery on a woman named Shear ; she gave seourity in $500 for court. Wm. M 2 BR committed to jail for farther examination, on the 4th inst., under the sus icsion of having been concerned with Ja: Witson in stealing & watch from Horace Ke: at the Annspolis Junction, which watch was found in this city, was released on bail in the sura of $500, his presence being necessary in Philadelphia, on the 9th, as a witness in an ——— case. ‘atrick Hanlen was arrested by Officer Par- ham for an assault and battery on his wife; gave seourity for peace. Washington Goodrich, an officer from Balti- more, was arrested by Officer King, on the 4th inst , for committing an assault and battery on Wm M. Johnson. The prosecuting witness not being present, the defendant gave security to appear at a subsequent time, of which the prosecutor had due notice, but not appearing to prosecute the case was dismissed. ames Carr, Thomas North, and John Joner, three young pic kets from Baltimore, were arrested by Sees al Policeman McHenry and Watchman Birkhead, and there not being suf- ficient evidence to convict them of an overt act, although taken under suspicious cireum- siances, they were dismissed upon promise of Isaving the city immediately, which they did. Tax Lignr Artitteny Driut which took place on the mall yesterday afternoon, drew noe five thousand persons to witness it, though the weather was disagreeable. The artillery was that which figured ao favorably in the inaugural procession, s. ¢. company K, Ist artillery from Fort McHenry, commanded ty Major French. The firing was executed wit remarkable rapidity, and the other evolutions were well performed, and would have doubt- less been carried out with greater precision, but for the crowd ot boys who covered the ground, and obliged the troop frequently to stop in mid career to avoid trampling the lit- Ue fellows down It was astonishing, the amount of crinoline upon the ground. What humbugs the women are to be sure, professing such dread of gun- powder, such horror of war and all its su: roundings; yet they scamper to a parade as fast as their pretty feet will carry them, give their civic beau the slip, and ten chances to one march homo on the arm of a “milingtary”’ man. ‘‘keeping step to the music of the union,” as Rufus Choate says—Vel, vot of it? Rossgry.—On the night of the fourth, Mr. R. A gold watch valued at $100 was stolen and small amount of monep. In ove spot $1,100 were placed, but which was untouched. The watch was a thir- teen jeweled watch and attached to a silk rib- bon about an inch a half in width, cracked across the chrystal. Mr. Gault of Baltimore, was robbed of a wateh at the Capitol on the 4th. The watch is valued at $80. A Nartonat Loss —We hear it stated that the draft of the Farewell Address of Wasbing- ton has been stolen from the library of the State Departmect. A most rigid search his been instituted for its recovery, which it is to be hoped msy prove successfal; as upon the ossession Of this original document, with its loterlineations, dependa the proof of its authorship by the Father of his Country—a int contested, it will be remembered, by the istorian of General Hamilton, who claims for that eminent statesman the honor of its com- position. Founp at ras Presipexr’s Hovsz.—A memorandum book was found at the i dent’s last night. Also, one on the night of the 27th of Febraary, which appears to be- long toa conductor on the Cincinnati and Chi- cago railroad; and on the same night a porte- monnaie, which appears to belong to some member of the mission at St. Patrick’schurch. They were placed in the ssion of Captain Mills of the Auxiiiary Guard, who has left them at the counter of the Star office, where the owners can get them, — Sraaxesns rx Wasnineron.—Some idea of the number of strangers in Washington during the past week may be formed upon the fact that up to three o’olock p. m, yesterday, over 17,000 persons had visited the Patent Office since Monday, of whom about 1,716 registered their names in the book at the central hall door Numbers of the light-fngered gentry visited the halls, but were so closely watched by the officers of the building that they had no chance to operate, Wasuincros Circus —To-night, an extra Programme is to be given, it being for the ben- efit of Mr. C. Shawen, the proprietor, a gen- tleman who has won golden opinions on all sides during his stay, apd who has certainly exerted himself to the utmost to give eques- trian performances, of a character to deserve the approbation of the better portion of our citizens, a class not always catered for by cir- cus | sh abraeps We trust his benefit may be 8 substantial compliment. —— Recovsrgv.—Justice Donn, who had his pocket picked on the night of the 4th instant of about $25, received twenty-five dollars en- closed in a note, from some person, who de- clares that the man Henderson, now in jail for the offence, is not the man who committed the act. Justice Donn is of opinion, however, that he has the right man, and it is probable Henderson will be held for the offence, though the Squire is very glad to recover his money Ax Inpustriovs Taizr.—On the morning of the 4th, at 10 o’elock, a Mr. Horace Keys was robbed of a watch at the Annapolis June- — oe 3 fans — = thief was arrest- is city r havin, trated four robberies in various parts ef thigoity. * — Departep —Many of the suspicious charac- ters who have been lurking about the city since the first of the munth have departed, but there are enough left to require csution on the part of citizens and strangers who have valuables to lose.
