Harding, it seems, had been paint- ingin Mr Upham’s family. He wrote to the Senator, and addressed him thus: “Hon A. 3. Upham, Senate Chamber, Albany.”” For fome reason, the Sonator did not return an answer. In due time, he received another from the same artist, with a much more lacon- ic superscription. Itread: “A.8 Upham, wagon maker, Aibany.”’ This put the gaff to the Senator, who replied withcut further de- lay, addressing his correspondent as follows : “Gen ie. Sign and Chair Painter, Buf- falo.’’ The joke being mutual between them, we havea right to infer that honorabie men love the reminiscences of youth, +The Independance Belge, of the 24 inst., says: ‘* The departure of Horace Ver- net for Now York is announced. Several pic- tures have been taken of him, and chis en- gogement will probably detain him in the United States about six months. We do not know if Horace Vernet bas accepted the en- gegement, but a story is circulated in the dif- terent ateliers of eminent artists that he will not resist the tempting offer of $200,000. If Vernet should execute several pictures in the United States, he would undoubtedly realize an immense fortune.” We see that some of our contemporaries take exception to the engagement of Veraet to paint a picture for the Capitol. and claim that sli its works of art should be executed by Awerican artists. Why not, with the same propriety, demand that all the books in the Cengressional Libray be written by American authors? ao The Humbug of Spiritualism. Four years ago a young boy, 9; 12 hung himself at momen mone oon | Agere thought that he had committed suicide, and no inquest was held. Recently—we condenre from « two-columned statement in the Troy Times—at a spiritual circle at Nassau, some person, who felt a curiosity to test the matter, inquired if the spirit of the boy Phillips con! be made tc appear? An affirmative response was immediately given. It was then asked if he bad committed suicide, as was generally supposed? The answer was in the negative. Upon being asked how he came to his death, the epirit replied that he had been murdered, and gave the facts, substantially as follows : He was acquainted with a woman who lived in the same neighborhood as himself, who had always beon friendly towards him. On one unlucky day, however, he became cognisant of the fact that she was holding illicit inter- course witn @ man, whose name was given. The guilty party learned of this discovery, and fearing the exposure by him of one crime, averted it by adding another. While he slept, a nail was driven into his head, ina portion whence no blood flowed, and he awoke in the spirit world. His body was then taken to the farm, and hung by the neck to one of the raf- ters, in the manner in which it was when found. An immenze turmoil thereupon ensued in Nassau. The remains were disinterred in the resence of a large concourse of spectators; an cquest was held; but the skull was unbroken and there was no evidence of death by foul means. It appeared from the evidence that on the dsy preceding his death the boy Levi had attended a circus, and was considerably excited by the daring feats performed there. There was to be a busking at the barn that evening, and from the circumstances it would appear that be had attached the rope to the rafters, and was practising gymnastic exercises upon it, designing to astonish his friends with some daring feats. While practising thus, be was probably caught by the neck, and, there being no assistance at hand, hanged until be wasdead. The coroner's jury, of course, re- turned a verdict of accidental death The worst rewains to be told. The woman accused of the murder was the b>y’s mother, a lady of excellent character, and devotedly attached to herson She is now seriously ill from the effects of the painful rumors which have been incirculation.
