others, all of them being of the class of its most noted, worthy and substantial citizens. We never saw & more mournful procession ; one in the countenances of which deep sincere grief was more plainly depicted. And well it might have been; for they were mourning the sudden passing away from earth, of a man in WASHINGTON CITY: MONDAY ......- was March 2, 1867. SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Inteltigencer regrets the frequent changing of members of Congress, taking the approaching retirement of Mr. Tyson, of Penn- sylvania, as its theme. We find in the Intelligencer the following Mormonism and Filibusterism.—We hear @ great deal, from time to time, about the diffasion of intelligence in this country. The Yankees, especially, spread themselves won- derfully, and talk magnificently on the sub- ject of their colleges and schools, and of the extraordinary acuteness of the universal Yan- kee nation. We don’t think they evinced much evidence of their vagt wisdom by the loose way in which they ran mad on Know- Nothingism and on Kansas, But let those two delusions pass, as good enough political hobbies to ride until after the election; and passing over them, what are we to ssy of the table tipping craziness, of Mormonism and of filibusterism ? Here is a great heap of inconceivable silly humbugs and falsehoods, by means of which Brigham Young and his gang draw a pack of Poor feols to Utah to euffer all eorts of mar- tyrdom on the road, and to sink into the mean- est and most brutal slavery when they get there. During the same time, ancther great crowd seven or eight thousand in number, of equally foolish victims of Walker, are deluded by equally monstrous and silly falsehoods to go to Nicaragua to starve and rot there as his bond slaves. Are the people of the United States really intelligent, or is all our boasted enlightenment nothing but misplaced vanity and shallow self-conceit? Doddridge C. Lee is a spare-maie mar, rather tall, with thin gray bairand large grey or blue eyes, and is about 55 yearsofage. It is known to the police that he precured the pistol on the morning on which he perpetrated the fatal deed, borrowing it fur the cccasion As the testimeny shows, he was assured of the respectability of Mr. Hume, not only onthe night of the difficulty at the Pres dent’s h« use, but in the morning before Mr. H. called at bis room in the Pension bureau. ago be was connected with Billy Meshon in the management of the Alexandria race course, and was then most noted ia that neighborhood He was dismissed by Sec- ratazy McCiclland from his clerkship in the Pension bureau within an hour after the fatal Tux Navat Court or Inquiry. The Preparations for the Ball.—The pre- parations being made for the grand inaugura- tion ball, on the 4th proximo, are probably on more elaborate and magnificent scale than apy that were ever before esesyed in an {t can hardly be that there will be less than ten thousand ladies and gen- tlemen there, if not twice as many. All the preparations to which we refer above are being made to accommodate such a throrg. The music will be far superior to any ball music so far heard in the United States, and the eupper is to be the production of the first artistes de Everybody should go who desires to see, at a glance, fair specimens of our countrywomen and men from every county of every Stat: in the Union, and of every posi- tion in life. From that of the millionaire, with his wife decked with twenty thousand dollars in diamonds, to the daughters of the sturdy western yeoman whose own hands guides his Plougb, or of the mechanic who disdains not to shove the jack-plane, the brillianey of whose eyes strike deeper into the soul of the man of substantial character and eolid sense than all the jewelry that Broadway contains. seene as will be met with thero has never yet been enjoyed in this country, and the opportu- nty to witness it may never again be the lot of 8oy (f us now active in the drama of life. American city. eusine in America as a cock-fghter. The Late David Hume.—A strong and most commendable point in the character of the late Mr. Hume, has been most forcib!y illustrated in the testimeny already given before the Coroner’s jury and the bailing u. We allude to his forbearance. would have so earnestly plead as he did to be relieved from resenting the grave imputation upon a@ spotless character, so pertinaciously forced upon him by the man by whose hand The affair, with its antecedents here and its results so far, has struck this commu- nity with a thrill of horror. Fabens’ Statement.—We notice, this morn- ing, ia the letter of the New York correspon- dent of the Nationalgpitelligencer, the fol- lowing paragraph : “During the proceedings yesterday in the fillibuster case, ex Consul Fabens evught to read his defence, in which he attempts to im- rominent men connected with istration in the Mosquito inney s Central American 5 was not allowed to put the doc- ument in as evidence, and has therefore given through the newspapers. jis defence are sundry letters which indicate the complicity charged; but, asthe showing is wholly ex parte, counter-statements would probably place an entirely different construction on the matter.’’ This sta‘emext is inexact, both in what it Siys and what it does not easy. When the weiter spcaks of the attempt of Fabens “to implicate certain prominent men connected wth the present acministration,” the gener- ality and vagueness cf the phrase tend to pre- duce false impressions. And he does injustice to the persons referred to, in saying that let- ters produced by Fabens “‘ indicate the com plicity charged.” We might say as to this, and there stop, that the attempt of Fabens-to injure and an- noy any gentleman who had written to him in friendliness by producing letters written in that way, becomes an outlaw at once. He is no longer entitled to touch the hand of a gen- tleman, and rinks immediately into the lowest class of mere depredators on scciety. Wehave seen @ great macy inetances cf this, and never knew an exception. It destroys the perpetrator withcu: inflicting the slightest in- jary upon him whose confidence is thus be- plicate certain the present Admi grant apy H. The Excitement .—The excitement in Alex- andria, concerning the homicide of Mr, Hume, continues to beintense. The Board of Trade, which passed resolutions on the subject on Sat_ urday, was in session upon it at 10 a. m. to. day. It was understood that the act of admit- ting Doddridge C. Lee, under the circum- stances, to bail, caused the meeting of this The Corpse.—The corpse of the late David Hume, Esq., was carried up to Orange Court- House, Va, yesterday morning. An immense concourse of mourning citizens of Alexandria attended at the depot, notwithstanding the hour of the departure of the train—at 7 a. m. Opening Bids —The bids for the new Post Office building in Windsor, Vermont, and Custom House at Galena, Illinois, were duly opened on Saturday at the Treasury Depart- In the present case there is duplicity as well ! anemia ment in pursuance of the Secretary's notices as meancess, since Fabens well knows that his attempt to implicate the two gentlemen re- ferred to, Mr. Nicholson and Mr. Webster, was a mere trick of filibustcriem, and a failure atthat. But indeed, we are wasting time in dealing sericusly with Fatens and such mere Teeruiting sergeants for Walker. Had they dolayed action, holding the accused yotil this morning, rather than % instanter, the present feeling upon the sabject ing Washington and elsewhere would not be rife.
