EVENING STAR. = ERTIQEMENTS SHOULD 85 LEFT aT THE OvvioN BY ‘TwRLvE 'cLocs, M.; OTEERWISE THET MAY NOT APTEAB UNTIL THR NEXT Dar. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Fixe Arts —Un yesterday afternoon there was a gathering of artists, members of the | sae and others, at a private exhibition given n the Picture Gallery of the Smithsonian [n- stitution, of two pictures by Mr. Wm. Heine, (the accomplished artiseof the Japan Expe- dition) representing ‘‘ Lake Nicaragua’’ and the “Gulf of Fonseca ’’ Aside from the ex- traneous interest attached at this juncture to views of Nicaraguan scenery, these pictures have intrinsic merit sufficient to make them noteworthy objects. The view of Lake Nicaragua is taken from the Sand oval estate, recently acquired by Mr. Soule. Io the lake is seen the voleanic island of Ometepec, the scene of the recent slaugh- ter, and in the distant perspective across the lake is the province of New ja. Tothe left is seen the outskirts of the city of Grana- da; in the foreground is an indigo plantation and factory, and to the right a grove of man- g° trees, indigenous to the country. The next picture represents the Gulf of Fonseca, with a distant view of Tiger Island, @ point of recent diplomatic interest The view is taken from Portillo de la Victoria ‘The local coloring in both pictures is ad- mirable, and they have the merit of being strict portraits of the scenes represented. Judging from these pictures, the natives can- not weil be blamed for fighting for so lovely a country. Picxpockets.—Those who have never had practical demonstration of the adroitness of these gentry cannot appreciate the danger to be apprehended when they are about A gentleman of this city. who ssys he “ would never believe half the stories told in the news- papers about them,”’ while getting his mail at the post office window last evening, had his ortemonnaie taken from a very deep pocket in his pantaloons, so “sleekly’’ that he did not suspect anything wrong until he stepped back from the crowd His recollection of the incidents as they occurred convince him that the act required the services of a plurality of s—one of them pressing against his Tok with euch force as to cause his sense of feeling to centre in that part of bis body, while another relieved him of—a five dollar Latham note, five postage stamps, a bank notice and a medical prescription. He does not doubt tbat a pair of tongs, or some long and slender instrument, was used .0 the ect. Had the perpetrator dove deeper he would have found some change; and had he tried another pocket he would have found a land warrant, duly assigned in blank, which had been paid for a afew minutes before, mostly from the contents of the same portemonnaie. This is only one case among hundreds of the same kind which may be expected within the next two weeks. Passace Taigves —The operationsof these persons may be expected in every case where an opportunity offers. They area bold set, and bave very cunning ways of carrying on their work and of escaping detection and even suspicion if discovered before, or sometimes while committing their depredations. Several cases have come to light quite recently—one at Lieut. Boyle’s house, in the First Ward where the fellow, finding himself discovered, put on quite an air of simple innocence, bor- dering ant upon idiocy. He found, bow- ever, in the Lieutenant, who was fortunately “at home,”’ a customer whocouid not be bem bugged. As the chap, when discovered, had not committed any depredation, he was let off by being “let out’ a little faster than his own volition could carry him. No stranger nor doubtful person should be permitted to get or remain inside a house without some other person being present with them. Those who expect to leave their houses unoccupied at any time during the next fortnight, or only in the cbarge of servants, should first make sure of baving double fastenings to doors and win- dows — Mz. W. H. Patwer’s Concerr, it Carusi’s, on Saturday next, will be a brilliant affair, and in the present populous condition of the city there is little pha that the saloon will be Gilled to overflowing. The concert has been got up at the request of many leading citi- zens who could not attend the late benefit for the poor, and who have been made to regret the glorious musical treat they lost in covse- quence. Many fine pieces of music are an nounced, and we are particularly advised that Jullien'’s Drum Polka, which made such a motse at the last concert will be repeated, and mwreover, that the Drum Solo ia to be played om Palmer’s wonderful spirit drum. If we remember rightly this drum is suspended in the centre of the hall to a chandelier, and at the proper moment the most alarming and re- markable drum beating ia heard on it, with- out any person being near to manipulate in any way. Who the mischief plays it? we certainly don t believe in spirits. However, the eencert is bound to be a bumper. Tae Beavtirve Tatses —Porsons of refined taste — us should be sure to visit the ex quisite works of art of Vito Viti & Sons, now being exhibited at the suction rooms of Mr James C. Mctéuire.jwhich are to be sold to-mor- row afternoon, to which we called their atten- tion a day ortwoago. This sule sfurds to all the opportunity of obtaining, fora song, com- paratively, beautiful copies of some of the most celebrated works of art of ancient and modern times, as well as originals scarcely less val- wable. So far asthe skill, taste and genius with which they are executed is concerned, nought tends more to cultivate popular taste im the right direction than the diffusion of such gems—their popularization, as it were We therefore Siqgerely hope that not one of the gems of the collection will leave the Dis trict of Columbia, but that, wherever one may turn within its limits, some portion of them may serve to refine and soothe the spirit of the beholder For tag Fair.—Considerable interest wos e ed yesterday in a marble column that was being carried along Pennsylvania avenue towards the Mechanics’ Fair Oa inquiry learned that it was one of those columns that are being turned in a lathe from solid blocks, at the Capitol, under the superinten- dence of Capt. C Meigs, and that are to be erected at the General Post Office building This one was for deposit at the Fair by Capt M itis of Italian marble, is 20 feet 2} inches in length and 2 feet 3 inches in diame- ter In ite progress up the avenue, on arriv lpg at Sixth street, the wheels of the truck sunk 0 as that the column rested on the ground. At ros Mzegrtixe of the Teachers’ Asaocia- tion to-morrow forenoon (eleven o’clock) at the Smithsonian Institution, the essay as- signed to Mr. J. E. iter en x of the Fourth District School will be read. The topic is “Systematic education in elementary schools.’’ It is expected that the essay and discussion will, tomorrow, be of more than usual inter- est to teachers and friends of the public schools. Postic Meetine —Oar readers will bear in mind the — meeting that takes place to- night at the Council Chamber, to take the Long Bridge question into consideration. Tue Agricie in cur advertising columns yesterday respectiog the Georgetown Cadets was written by a friend of the corps,—not by one of the members. : “(A Taine or Brauty is 4 Joy Forever!" sang the plaintive Keats; and what more beautiful than a superb steed? Happy Dan Rice! to own such a horse ; happy Major! to ride such a steed; happy Excelsior! to have such a rider on such a day ; and happy all the balance of us! to see such a horse, with such a rider, in such a procession. t Mapa Swerr.—This lady is having agreat rush of business at her rooms on Seventh street. ‘The following card from the pen of Mr. E. B Ward, the celebrated steamboat owner, needs no comment: To the Public —Toveno, Sept. 21, 1856.—I hereby certify that I have tested the powers of Madam Swett as a Clairvoyant, and I have found her a trutbful and relinble lady. By the use of her powers I have been en- abled to trace out a criminal, and compelled him to make restitution without an appeal to the law. Madam S. traced every stage of the transaction with such accuracy that the cul- prit dare not trust to the law, and paid with- out hesitation. I bad no knowledge or sus- picion of the villainy until by sccident in a Clairvoyant examination I obtained a trace from which I was enabled to learn the whole amemnon; and since Bucepb- transaction.
