EVENING STAR. (&F ApvEstTunwants SHOULD 8s Lert ar TER Orrice BT ‘TWELTS @ctocs, M.j OTEEAWise TUT BAT NOT APPEAR UNTIL THE WEET Day. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tas Wasutneton Art Association —This Association held a meeting last evening, at the Smithsonian Institution, and addresses were delivered by the President of the Aszo- ciation, Dr. Horatio Stone, the sculptor, and by Rufus Dawes, Esq The audience was made up more largely of artists, literary and scientific gentlemen than we have often reen in this city Mr. Stone first addressed the meetinz, in zome practical remarks explanatory of the purposes of the Art Association, and of the leetures to be given in connection with it. Commencing by expressing his gratification at seeing so large a number present as augur- ing well for the swecess of the enterprise, he went on to say that whatever may be the views of some in regard to the relations of art with national rentiment and life, all bistory has shown that they are mutually dependent and inseparable ith the uprising and ex- ion of national life, art ascends and brigh- tens; and when that flickers and fades, art descends anddies Art must have something worthy in its national bistory and home to re- vere, to cherish, and to hope for; and the composition of the greatress of the past, with all-imaginable splendors in the future. into the woot of the passing time, is the high vo- eation of all whom the muses inspire, and especially of the poets and artists—the illus- trators of civilization—the fame keepere of Bations. I. a Hitherto they have wrought in comparative isolatio Whilst every other intellectual as well as material interest bas been advanced by conventional and institutional combias- tions, the power of usefulness of this class of citizens, whose ministrations to society are isite to give a consecrating charm to all mains to be thus realized. it of the age and the large require- ments cf this commemorative period of our national history demand that they should take the ce amid the intellectual forces and activities of the times; that they should adopt and realize the force of our national motto: ‘In Union is strength;’’ that they should bipd up their bundle of fasces, and in- augurate their union of States. To furnish a basis for this Union, and at the same time supply for the seat of government the long neglected want of a ga'lery of art, this institation has been organized, baving in ¥ ew not only local and temporary interests, but those of the whole nation end the far tuture. Considering the populer and rapidly in- creasing interest in the fine arts, and especially in reference to their patriotic uges, it has beea given the name and form of a popular crgan- ‘zation, adwitting of exp»nsive operations and accumulation of membership, instead of the pame and constitution «f an academy. The constitution provides for the accomplish- Inent of specific and local purpoces only as the hecessary means of attaining comprehensive ends. It declares that the association shall be comptsed of artists and persons interested in the progress of art—thst its general object shall be the encouragement and advancement of the fms arts, and that ail its funds, from whatever source derived, shall be devoted to the purchaze of works of art and books for the formation ef a permanent gallery and library In pursuance of these genera: purposes, the special operations of the institution have been directed, and sre in successful progress. A course of lectures or esthetical discoursse are to be delivered by gentlemen of eminent abili- ty im art and literature from various sections of the country; the ass tion has also insti- tuted an uviversal exhibition of works of art, t» be cortributed by artists resiiing in every part of the Union. The Greeks in their palmy days instituted their Elentheria or Festival of Freedom, to which annually assembled delegates from all the States to celebrate their victories, and in sacrifice and sung express their gratitude to the deity who gave themfreedom. ‘They also held their bh ie an tellectual games, in all cf which was manifest their high religious faith and devotion. The time ought not to be distant when we shal! here witness the enactinent of all those beautiful and useful observances,—when Pa- t.iotism, Science, Art, and Religion shall meet t ocontest and celebrate the victories «{ each, and consecrate them sll with sacred song and gratefyl thanksgiving to our Divine Deliverer and Giver of Freedom. The speaker in eloquent terms proceeded to depict the condition of Mount Vernon, a neglected and time worn ruin: of ise tombs of the early Presidents disregaried and furgot- ten; of the graves of the Leroes and patriots of the Revoluuon marked by no memorial of the nation’s gratitude, and urged that the time is rife for the existence of a comprehensive pa. triotic association to represent the grateful sentiments of the present generation towards its benificent fathers. The seat of Government, the central na. tional home, presents in its public grounds and on the walls of its public edifices, every where blank spscea that should long since bavye been filed with commemorative marhie and the richest decuratiuns of the of whereou the champi ns of science, li inventive genius and Christisn benificence bave fought and won for the nation and tae @ge victories no less heroic, no lessuseful than were thoze attained by the champions of our politica! independence, all these fields of ex ertivn and triumph remain to be marked by moouments which e grateful and appreciative people are prepared and waiting to built. The time was anticipated when the cozstitu- tion of the aszcciation should have recorded the names of fifty thousand permanent mem- bers, aod we may witness the expansion of our ent gallery and library of art into the ns temple of fame, and see it adorned & apn ample illustration of its history through al! the forms of literature and art Mr. Dawes was next introduced to the au- dience by the President of the Association, and he, prefacing his address by some re- merks upon the nature of eriticism, a subject that be had at first thought of addreesing the Association upon, as eminently kindred to its jects Upon the topic chosen, “ The devel- cpwent of the highest humsn faculty in it: re- I m to Art,’’ he proceeded to speak in gen- eral terms on the development of the a: i faculty as a distinet faculty, and the greatest we p He contended that there is a law ef development by which bumancapacity un foids faculties in proportion to the require- mentsof the will That the imagination is the firet faculty unfolded is well known; but the quality and the nature of the imagination have never beendetermined Thisdefiziency bas arisen from the mistake of philosophers in reficcting on the imagination in the adult subject ; whereas true knowledve relative to it is only to be derived trom a recollection of it ineur earliest consciousness. This recol- lection, and a carefal stacy of the habits of children, reveals the fact that clildren are of ‘imagination all compact,’’ even more than poets are, and that they have a natural and irresistable tendency to prosupozw ia imparting life t» dead matur. This fact is very important, but it has been overlooked or turned to no sccount by philoso- pbers; but it reveals one of the most fruitful principles of haman nature. This infantile tendency is the spontaneous effort of the un- corrupted soul to realize the divine life in na ture. But as the reason dawzs the logical faculty subdues it and exercises the dominion over it The imagination is now an altered fsculty, and is cultivated in its connexion Witu reason. The proudest of theseis science Ait is Lefore science; Lut when science ap- pears it becomes its illuminator, and, if the character is not eensuous, reveals a new fac- ulty of the mind which is most eminently scientific, partaking of the imagination and the reason, viz., tue analogic feculty which enubles us to discover the life or mind of na- ture in its connexion with matter; in other words, the analogy of the universe The speaker proceeded to treat bis subject io a metaphysical vein, and covcluded by in- ferring the importauce cf purifying the char- acter as the only way of producing the most useful and cdmirable works of art.
