Taz Boarv or Common Counci, met on Monday evening fe Mr. Knight presented the petition of certain roperty holders on H street suuth. between Foawand a-balf ard Sixth street west, ac- eempanied by a bill, for grading the said s-reet; referred. Mr Lioyd. from ways and means commit- tee, introduced a bill making an y gt omen to pay the increased salaries of the Surveyor pal Assistant Surveyor, as per act approved February 11, 1567; passad. Mr. Towles, from claims committee, report- ed the bill from the Aldermen for the relief of Etias E. Barnes; passed. Also, a bill from the same Board for the re lief of J H Godfrey; laid on the table Mr. Towles, from claims committee, asked to be discharged from the further considera- tion of the petition of Ann Coad; and the com mittee was accordingly discharged. A Mr Watterson, from police committee, re- ported a bill authorizing the Mayor to employ an extra police at the approaching snaugura- tion of the President of the United States Mr. Fisher moved to amend the bill by striking out the worda ‘‘ ten police officers’’ and inserting ‘‘ twenty police officers,’ and also by striking out wo hundred dollars”’ and inserting ‘‘four hundred dojlars;"’ and the question being takea thereon it was de cided in the negative ‘The bill was then passed. Mr. Watterston, from police committee, re- ported s bill regulating the weight of hay. Mr. Lloyd moved to amend tue bill by strik- ing out the word ‘ avoirdupois” in the eev- eral places where it occurs; and the motion Was agreed lo Mr. Kennedy moved to amend the bill by adding the words “straw, fodder, &e ;’’ which motion was also agreed to. The bill was then passed. Mr. Watterston, from police committee, re- ported with an amendment the bill from the Aldermen authorizing the erection of lamp- posts and lamps in front of Jadiciary Square; passed Mr. Watterston, from the police committee, asked to be discharged from the further con- sideration of the joint resolution from the Al- dermen “‘ declaring James H Birch not to be the police ma; ite for the seventh district;"” and the committee was accordingly discharged Mr. Gordon presented the petition of Chas. Hewitt and others, asking that Foster Hen ahaw's iron pump may be adopted in lieu of the wooden ones now in use; referred to im- provements committee. Mr. Jefferson introduced a bill to grade and gravel Tenth strect west, between K and M streets north ; referred to improvements com mittee. The President laid before the Board an in- itation from the management to visit the fair of the ladies connected with the Sixth Presby- terian church, now being held ; accepted. The joint resolution trom the Aldermen in relation to the erection of two lamps in front of the Northern Liberties Market house was taken up for consideration Mr. Lloyd moved to refer the joint resolu- tion to the improvements committee; disa- to Mr. Lioyd then moved to amend the bill by adding thereto the followin “And that the Mayor i authorized to place two lamps on Seventh street, one at the vorner of the Mall. and the other on the cor- ner of Maryland avenue and Seveath street ; and also two on Twelfth street at similar points ;*’ lost. The bill was then passed. The concurrent resolution from the Alder- men authorizing a joint meeting on Monday next, for the election of @ magistrates of the Fourth and Seventh Wards, was adopted. The bill making an appropriation to pay the City Assessors for the performance of cer- tain duties, which was postponed until this was taken up for consideration t. Lloyd guve notice that on Monday next be would introduce a bill compensating the assessors of the Sixth and Seventh Wards for the performauce of certain duties. Mr. Fisher moved to postpone the further consi tion of the bill to compensate the city assessors until corrected printed lists of the persons residing in the respective Wards ape obtained ; disagreed to. Tersity Cavrea Suxpay Semcon Fairn.— We call the attention of our readers to a no tice, in another column, of a Fair to be held by the children of Trinity Church Sunday School. The object of this fair is to assist in paying for a new misvion church, just com- leted, on the corner of Sixth and N streets 'o those who aro familiar with the locality it will be unnecessary to speak in commendation of the enterprise, and we doubt not they will show by their presence at the Fair that they appreciate the importance of the work. Tax Pree axp Haruisox Troupz.—Those of our citizens who are conscientiously opposed to tho opera wili have an opportunity in the Pyne and Harrison troupe concerts to hear this Sue company without doing violence to their sense of propriety. Others with whom time is an object will be glad to get at the crysta tions of choice music thus attainable in a single evening. In Monday’s Star there was a telographic announcement of a riot on Saturday afternoon and Sundsy among the Irish laborers em- Ployed by the Long Dock Company in eon- structing the tunnel for the use of the New York aod Erie Railroad, through Bergen Hill, in the city of Hudson, New Jersey. The New York Tribune says that the first reports were greatly exoggerated, and that no one was killed. About four hundred of the labore:s were ergaged in it burned, and three were somewhat damaged in an attempt to tear them down. men quelled the riot, and the military kept guard during the night and next day; but no life has thus far been sacrificed. one named James Kelly and the other James Barnard, are so badly injured that they proba- bly cannot survive.
