Luposition —Yesterday morning, one of the County Constables came upon a family which by an imposition had obtained no less than eight loads of wood from the committee ap- pointed to distribute it to the poor. A load had been obtained in tbe maiden name of the wifs, another in the name of her husband, aud one in the name of each of the children. Such instances as these show the necessity for some such plan of action by the relief commit- tees as that recommended by a vorrespondent of the Intelligencer. He suggests, first, that every district of the city shouid be personally surveyed by the dis- bursing commiltee or by some other trust- worthy persons employed by them to prevent imposition. If the section’ are tov large for this, let them be sub-divided and more com- mittees created ; let each committee take a census of the cases of real want, and see the suffering persons in their own houses; let the visiters also be provided with cards of simple form, to be given to the persons as they are registered, and shown by them on their appli- cations to the committee for relief; let each committee obtain orders from the treasurers of the funds and open an account with each per- son relieved; let the orders be always en- dorsed by all the members of the committeo, and let no orders be given but those so en- dorsed This will preveat confusion in render- ing final accounts, and show precisely what each committee has done in its respoctive sec- tion, how much money has been expended, for what, aud to whom The committee of the section bounded by New Jersey avenue, New York avenue, and North Capitol street, have pursued this pe and find it to werk admirably. They have found cases of great distre: nd prevented several cases of imposition. They know the needy now by looking them in the face, and ean detect from their register of names, taken by actual visitation and survey. any attempt to deceive them. Dear Sin: By order of the committee ap- pointed by the friends of the late C Clement Venabie to devise means for bringing on his remains from Nicaragua, I hereby transmit to you $13, the residue of the funds collected for that purpose, wishing it to be appropriated for the benefit of the poor, as the object for which the committee was appointed has been rend- ered impracticable fur the present in conse- quence of a failure to obtain a mode of con- veyance, and owing to the present unsettled state of the Nicaraguan Government.
