LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Seamisa Coix —We have received varivus inquiries whether the bill which has been be- fore Congress in various shapes for the last T. relating to depreciated Spanish and jexican small coin, hss become a law, and if 80, when it goes into operation. We have to Say, that a bill fixing the rate at which these ins will hereafter be received by Govern- ment, and ui them to be sent when thus received to the mint for re-coinage, has me through both houses, but that in passing the House of Representatives amendments Were made to it requirirg the farther action of the Senate, and the bill is now before that bedy. provides that it shall go into effect from and after the date of its enact ment. The bill is not compulsory in its pro- — but it seems probable pac pat = sage the ile of the country wi © con- certed action to drive this miserable swind- ling currency out of circulation In this city some of our leading merchants have. in antici- pation of the final passage cf the bill, taken the initiative in refusing @ take these coins @t more than the depreciated rates of five, ten and twenty cents respectively. In New York city the ferry companies have taken the same step, and a similar movement is being made in Boston, Philadelphia, and other cities. The real value of Spanish quarters as silver, making allowance for wear, &c., is stated to be about ninety-five or ninety-six cents to the dollar. On the twelve-and s baif cent pieces the depreciation is from ten to twelve per cent, and on the six-and-a-quarter cent pieces from twenty to thirty per cent. We congratulate our readers on the pros- peet of a substitution of our own convenient decimal currency for this worn out stuff Ssconp Ward Meetine ror tae Revier or tae Poor.—At an adjourned meeting of A zens of this Ward, held in the Foundry church, on the 26th instant, for the purpose of devising measures for the relief of the saffer- ing and destitute, Mr Grafton Powell was ealled to the chair, and F.
