Wasuington Crry Prorestaxt Orpaan Asyium —From the ———7 report for the year 1856 of the Washington City Protestant Asylum for orphans and destitute children, — we have received, we gather the fol- jowii articulars : The iestitution is under the care of a Board of Trustees and a Board of Managers. The former attend to the building—which re during the year been enl: |, giving water baths, &c , besides an additional room on each -—the Trustees also attend to the general funds. Tae Managers attend to the wants of the family, sach as a oe Foewbo general arrangements of the house, a! children—everything is done by their diree- tion. The institution has been happy in the selection of the matron, who faithfully carries out the wishes of the Board—e2onomical, sys- tematic and neat—with almost maternal care she watehes over the orphans, morning, noon and night, and oft times the midnight hour finds her attending their wants; and who can number the wants of sixty-three children. The asylum bas s teacher, an assistant in the family and a cook The girls are well in- structed in the work of the family, and the boys assist in such things as their strength will admit of. The duties of the day are commenced and close with prayer; the children attend the Sunday school of the Church of the Ascension, and regularly attend public worship; gener- ally when the collections are taken in the different churches. The institution bas met with a loss in the death of Mrs. Lear, for many years one of its most devoted friends. The occupants of the Asylum have beeo unusually blessed with health, not a case of serious illness having occurred within the year. The thanks of the Board are returned to many kind friends, who have sent them dona- tions of various kinds—all of which will be publicly acknowledged, excepting such gen- erous donors as desire to remain unknown. Thanks are likewise returned to ministers of various denominations who have taken colleo- tions in their churches—to the Rev. Mr Cummins (Trinity ch ) for.. $250.10 Rev. It is evident that it may be a considerable time ere the communication between Wash- ington and the region of the South not buried in snow can be re-established. The following from yesterday’s Alexandria Gaactte sheds some light on the obstructions to that desira- ble end remaining, at last advices from the interior, to be overcome : ORANGE AND ALEXANDRIA RatLRoap.—At six o'clock, on Wednesday afternoon, the train on the Urange & Alexandria Kailroad which left the depot, at this place, on Monday morn- ing had only been able to get within about a Rev. Mr. Smith (Presbyterian ch. 66 56 | rite of Manassas Station, a distance of thirt Rey. Mr. Hill ae chure! = pe miles, on account of the heavy snow drifts ae oe i ™ oom rpg oe 85.82 countered in the cutsonthe road. In some ey. ‘. a instances these drifts were from ten to twelve feet high, and the locomotives, in attempting to go through them would be rap are bu- tied, so that they would have to be dug out by the hands, about one hundred and fifty of whom have been kept constantly at work, with picks and shovels, removing the masses of snow. Those who have witnessed the obstruc- tions and the exertions to overcome them, say that they exceed anything of the kind they ever witnessed. Whore one of these sndw em- bankments occur, the locomotive is backed to a considerable distance, and then made to tush with the velocity of the wind directly against it, causing “an eruption like that of a voleano,’* and covering the earth for some distance around with quantities of snow, and completely burying the engine, so that a con- siderable time is required for its excavation Thus, with the aid of the locomotives, picks aad shovels, the work progresses until the snow is all excavated from the cut, and the track opened te another and perhaps a more difficult drift than its predecessor Could the track be once opened, there would be little difficulty in keeping it so—unless we should be visited with a storm like to the one of last Sunday. The General Superintendent, Mr Vandegrift, and his aids, have been most energetic in their endeavors to open the road, and under ordinary circumstances, their labors, would have been crowned with success, long before this. As we have stated, a number of hands and the locomotives are kept censtantly at work, and the road will be opened in a day Pr The exper d the great fati e re and the great fatigue necessary to be bare wget Tender ie pactiontacte severe on the hands employed, and several of them have been much frost-bitten. In consequence of the obstruction on the Orange and Alexandria railroad, there has been no report from the Manassas Gap or Cen- tral roads, nor is the condition of these roads known, or can be, until the Orange train passes the Junction. Also, to Dr. Palmer for professional services, and to Drs Nairn & Palmer for medicines. There are now at the Asylum twenty-three boys and forty girls. Fourteen children have been received—eleven have been returned to their friends wishing to take them, or placed in situations favorable for them ; the boys generally with farmers, who are required to keep them until of age, and then give them 350 There is one case the Board cannot omit meationing: A stout boy, eleven years of age, was found sleeping in the street, and without a home; he was older than was usually taken, but the oase was so sad that the Matron took him in, and the managers concluded to let him remain until they could findhinahome. He remained several months, and was found to be a good and useful boy, until an application ‘was made by a farmer, and he was bound to tim by the Orphans’ Court. This is one in- atance, of many, that have no doubt been saved. The Board have received $2,550.23; ex- pended, $2,550 56; leaving a debt of $1,005.- 2 5. id The report closes with an eloquent appeal to the = sont of Washington for further aid. The Archbishop of Paris had been acsassin- ated while performing religious services in the Church of St Etienne. The assassin ae aee forward, lifted his cape, and plunged a Catalan kuife to the Bishop's heart, ex- claiming “ Down with the goddess !”’—an ex- clamation which he afterwards explained to refer to the doctrine of the immaculate con- ception. The Bishop fell upon the pavement and instantly expired A Sister of Charity who had observed the movement attempted to throw herself between him and tbe Arch- bishop, and was wounded in the hand. Verges, the assassin, was formerly a priest in the dio- cess of Meaux but hed beea suspended for preaching xgainst the dogma of the immacu- late conception. He was in the insurrec- tion cf June, and on that cccasion received the murdered prelate in hisarms The gen- eral opinion is that he was deranged. The oe created a deep sensation at the Tuille- ies.
