‘@ ApvdeTuEMarTs SHOULD BE LarT aT THE Orrice BY Twaive o'cLock, OTEREWISE THEY MAT NOT APPEAR OWTIL THE SEXT DAT. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Usirep States AgricuitoraL Socrsty.— The resolutions introduced by Mr. Underwood of Kentucky, yesterday, in relation to the urchase of Mount Vernon were adopted, and essrs Underwood of Ky.,@. W P. Custis of Va., and Benson of Me., appointed a commit- tee to communicate with the proprietor of Mount Vernon in relation to such purchase. Mr. Fresee, Secretary of the Now Jersey Agricultural Society, wished to remark that in several newspapers, Mr. Calvert, of Md , was reported as having called th ibition at Philadelphia a hibition, and, as therein stated, the reader might be led to infer that this Society bad tacitly endorsed the remark. Mr. Calvert said he had not used the word ‘‘miserable”’ in that connection, and that reporters must have misconstrued the tenor and meaning of his rc- marks. . Professor Fowler intrcduced the following resolution, which was adopted : ae Hon. H. F. French, e Presented tan Secty. from New Hampshire, be furnished with a circular le‘ter commending him to the kind attention of agriculturalists in other lands, as a gentleman wnose ition at home entitles him to the esteem of all who pro- mote the great cause of agriculture; a cause which has well said to ** know no limits of brother- hood narrower than those of civilization.’ A boquet of exquisite beauty and fragrance was 8 resented to President Wilder, ac- ccapualed by the following note - To Hon. Mansuact P Witovgr, President National Agricultural Soctety : Sim: Intoken of your zeai and inspiring ex ample in the promotion of the cause of Floricul- ture, please accept tails humble testimonial from one who appreciates the relaxation of an hour from the business toil of life to revei among na- ture’s blandishments, In the outer courts of earth’s fruitage. . irs there are no fruits. =e ee G. Paer. Washingtos, D.C , January 15, 1857. Mr. Wilder gracefully disclaimed it as a present to himself, but accepted and acknow!l- edged it in the name of the Society. he propriety of placing in the possession of Mr. Peabody, the Society's representative at the meetings of the National Agricultural So- cieties of England and France, the views of this Society respecting the shows of procreative animals to be held in Paris in June or July next, was discussed, but no action was taken thereon. Mr. Lewis of Mass., from the committee upon agricultural statistics made the follow- ing report: The want of accurate statistics, and relicble in- formation as to the true resour és of our immense country, bas always been feit.and will be so un- til some definite pian is devised whereby such information can be obtained. Anactually correct return is not expected at first, but if an approxi- mate one can be obtained from year to year, and the average ascertained, it would prove of much vaiue to ail—particularly to the agriculturist. ‘The merchant or dealer in any articie of pro duce or traffic, whether pork, cotton, wheat, wo! or tobacco may have an object to disguise the real quantity of tae merchundize he deals in, whether raised, exported or consumed, and often the un- principled speculator wil! cause such quantiiies and priciples to appear in the market as will mis- lead the public and suit bis purpose, the fll ef- fects of which no class in the community expe- riences more than the producer Not so with the agriculturist. Any one can tell pretty nearly what he raises, or what stock he has on band at a given time; and if the schedule pro- by the commissioner ts presented annuaily yy the assessors in each town throughout the country, (as it is already done in several of the States,) more reliable informatioa will be ob- tained annually than from any otuer source. We trust that the Governors of the sevcral States and Territories, (where itis not already done.) will recommend the table hereto annexed, to be adopted by their several legislatures, and co-operate with the General tovernment in ing out this noble object, by annualiy for- waraing —— of their returns to the Patent Of- fice, where the whole may be properly and presented tothe pubiic in the annual report. signed, W.6. Lewis, H. WaceR, Jno. Mr. Grown took the speaker's stand, and a wreat number of questions were propounded to bim from all quarters of the room, to which he reeponded with @ readiness showing his thorough familiarity with the subject Sugar, he ssid, could sometimes be made from the dried aaiks, but it is expensive. For sugar it flourishes best on poor soils, but for fattentag animals on rich soils For sugar it should be barvested, or rather cut, late iu the season, but fc¢ seed should be cut, and therefore planted eartiee. Mr. Lewis, of Mass., introduced the follow- ing resolutions: Resolved, That acommittee of five be appointed by this Society to inquire into the origin, effects, and extent of a disease in this country denomi{- nated the Hog Cholera, now said to prevail to so alarming an extent in some of the States. Resolved, That said committee he directed to ascertain the most Ar giesay modes of treatment for swine affected with this disease. The resolutions were adopted. Prof. N. Mr Underwood, of Ky., rose to pro- pose that a request should be made to Prof. Henry for permission to incorporate in the proceedings of thie session a paper read at the last annual session of the society by Prof. H. upon “ The origin and action of power as ap piied to the vegetable kingdom.’ The proposition was adopted, and Prof. Henry courteously acseded to the request Mr. Flint, Secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Agriculture, was vow introduced to the society, and proceeded to read a paper upon ‘The Grasses of the United States,” accompanied by valuable tables. The value of the annual hay and (Eee crop of this coun- try was estimated at three hundred millions of dollars. Mr. Frazee, of N. The committee, we learn, readily acknow!- edged the necessity for further and better adapted accommodations for his office, and also for the Criminal Court. We are induced to hope from this visit they will sanction the recommendation of the Commissioner for an extension of the Court-house portion of the City Hall. rom the Clerk's office the committee pro- ceeded to the jail, accompanied by the Com- missioner and Engineer Coyle. They inspected every department of the jail, and we learn condemned it as shamefully insecure, destitute of ventilation, and in every respect discredit- able to the metropolis of the country. We think from the representations these gentle- men will make of the condition of the miser- able old jail, that this session of Congress will not be suffered to pass without making an ap- propriation for the erection of a new jail more in character with this enlightened and hu- mane age. At raz Batt of the Western Hose Company No. 1, on the occasion of opening their new Hall, on Tuesday evening, the 13th instant, a well-tilled room met the eyes of this indefati- gable company, and all went off with the greatest harmony and pleasure to every one engaged in it Miss Matilda Carroll presented the Company with a beautiful National Flag. The following are the addresses: Gentlemen of the Western Hose Company— It is with feelings of the deepest pleasure that on this occasion I «m here to present to your worthy association this Star-spangled Banner; and allow me to say, at the same time, that I am filled with the deepest conviction that you will preserve its folds untarnished, and its galaxy of stars undimmed, and, in so doing, prove yourselves true lovers of your country, and followers in the foo'steps of the fathers of by-gone days. The President of the Company having re- ceived it, made the following response : Respected Lady—In behalf of the Western Hoze Company, and with a just appreciation of their heartfelt thanks, I accept this gift ltisto us a proud and gratifying reflection that we are deemed worthy of this handsome offering of the fair sex, and by those whose smiles, like the stars of this glorious flag, illumine our pathway, aud cheer us opward to the performance of duty. Be assured, kind lady, that we shall cherish this proud emblem of the “ free and the brave,’’ and guard its stars and its stripes as a noble memento, a beautiful token, of the generous regard of fair and lovely woman. Bvok STBALING aT THE CaPpiTOL.—A youn man of very genteel appearance was detecte yesterday by one of the Capitol police in stealing a boox in the crypt under the rotunda. He is from a distant State, and has only been in the city fora fewdays So many depreda- tions of the kind have becn committed that it was docmed necessary for the protection of public property stored in the crypt to station an officer in that plece. It may be well for the light-fiogered gentry to know this fact, as they may rest assured that no similar depre- dation can escape detection, and that when so detested the culprit will be handed over to the proper aythorities to be dealt with ac- cording law. =— Wasaineton Circus. —his establizhmen® re-opens to-night, and our citizens may antici pate an equestrian treat of the first order, abounding with new and brilliant acta of torsemanship. and acrobatic and gymnastic feate, both wonderfal and pleasing.
