G STAR. ———— EVENIN SF AvTERTIRWEETS ROULD aE LaFT A TRE OFTICK BT Twente o'ctoon, M.; OTHERwiss THEY WAY SOT APPEAR CMT THE MEET Dar. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Sirasowras Instituts.—The ve ?— able as well as instructive lectures of Dr. Mor- ris upon Entomology have attracted great bumbers—perbaps the largest attended leo- ture of the course being that of last night upon the “Natural History of the Honey Bee.” _ : . ‘The industry and wonderful instinct of this little insect was eloquently set forth by the speaker. The hexagonal cell of the bee was demonstrated to be just that mathematical form which combines the greatest capacity with the least expenditure of wax. A square or triangular form would demand an unneces- sary oxpenditure of wax; acylindrical form would, by the interstices occurring between the cells, occasion a waste of space. The popular ideas that the bee procures its wax and honey direct from flowers was shown to be an error. The material is obtained from flowers, but requires hoo Pre prior to ‘ing the shape of wax and honey. “as feerh rx bosther 3 by illustrations upon the wall, the curious manner in which the bees hang in clusters while elaborating the wax in thin scales upon the breasi—a process requiring some twenty four hours—and of the manner in which the first deposit of wax is made upoa the roof of the hive on the com- mencement of building operations. The labor in a bee hive was as systematically divided as amongst a body of mechanics ; it was indeed asserted that a master bee overlooks the ope- rations of the other workmen, and where a bad piece of work is done, causes it to be down and rebuilt, precisely as a master mechanic would doin similar cireumstances. The lecturer would nct, however, vouch for the truth of this statement Amongst bees there was no law prohibiting females from mounting the throne; on the contrary, no male was permitted to assume the sovereignty. The queen bee allows no rival near the throne. oo attacks and st with the test fury, the you jueens, her own aa and this Pos a roi ordination of Providence ; thus preventing an increase be- yond the power of the working bees to feed. The queen bee is treated with the greatest esible reverence, precision, and politeness, y ber subjects Should she be abstracted from the hive the whole swarm is thrown into confusion, work is suspended and al! motive tor exertion seems to be wanting in the ab- sence of their sovereign. Should she return they exhibit marks of satisfaction, and resume their labore. For twenty-four hours after the departure of a queen, the swarm will accept no substitute. After that time they will ac cept another queen, ard instate her in all the honors and dignities of the departed one. Should a strange queen poke her snout into a hive which has a quecn of its own, the bees form a circle around the intruder, not to do her honor, but toprevert herdeparture. The ueen in poszession is then summoned, and tue two queens are made to fight for the sov- reiguty. x 2 Commenting upon analagous habits of in- sects and human beings, the lecturer related an amusing incident that had transpired on the occasion of a former lecture at the Smith- sonian Institution, the subject being “Tho Ant.’’ Accompanied on his way to the lec ture-room by two members of Congress, who were slaveholders, he told them he was going Yo establish that ants were slaveholders, and that the slaves were black. “Oh,”’ said ope G ‘be sure and make the most of it!’’ (Laugh- ter The wonderful fact has on established that every working bee is capable of being developed toa queen bee in case of aqueen being wanted, on occasion of the old queen having left the hive with aswarm, it had been ascertained that the remaining bees take common larvae and deposite it in the queenly cells, where by different food from that di:- ponsed to the working bees, and a different mode of treatment it is developed with queen- ly size and attributes. The wonders of entomology demonstrated foreibly the saying— “ Truth is strange, stranger than fiction.” The swarming of bees was described by the lecturer. It was merely the departure ofa queen with a swarm of followers from a re dundant hive. The immediate occasion of such an emigration was generally through a huff taken by the queen bee at being in- terrupted in the slaughter of her offspring by the other bees. when they deemed she had gone far enough ; thus she usually went off in aw high etate of excitement. There were va- rious modes employed to induce a swarm of bees to settle, such as beating tin i imitation of thunder, of which they a dread ; or throwing sand upon them, to give them the notion that it is raining; and ap in- » stance was related of an old gentleman who bad a way of leading a swarm to any required locality by a peculiar mode of whisting, The atmosphere of a crowded hive is close and hot, but the bees by motion of their wings venti- Jate it until enough swarms have been thrown off to render the labor unnecessary. Despe- tate conflicts occur between bees, sometimes fasting for days They are duelists, thieves and highway robbers ey compel the pom- pous humble bee to disgorge his honey. In the sense of amell the bee is very acute, its sight is also very keen, enabling it to wing its fight to its own hive with uuerring ac- curacy. In the whirl ot bees, when the air is filled with them, we never see two bees jostle. The other senses of the bee are also acute. The fact was stated that the bee cannot re- peat ile sting many times, the poison becom ing exhausted. Should the sting, which is barbed, remain in the wound, the bee dies. Some persons are not affected by the sting of the bes, while others die of it. The lecturer, however, expressed the opiniop that phere death resulted it must be owing to the copgi- tion of the blood cf the victim. He discredited the truth of the repo? that a young man out Wes: had died lately fx.n a spider bite. It required mre evidence to oztablish the fact of « spider bite resulting fatally. Dr Morris will inge his lectures on Wednesday and Friday nights of this week. ‘The next lecture will be upon “‘ Nataral Jlis tory as appligd to Farming and Gardening,” and will merit the attention of the members of the United States Agricultural Society, who meet ot the Inctitute on the same day. — Bare axo Soprer or tax Associatep Booksinpers.—We have but limited space to day to do justice to this fine entertainment, and therefore say in brief hut emphatic terms Chat it was in all respects u first class affair ‘Lhe managers, with the generous whole-soy!- edzew characteristic of the eraft, not ouly rformed all they promised, but much wore. The supper tables, as spread by Potentini, made a wort tempting display ; and amongst the confectionery trinmphs in his department ‘we were particularly pisazed with one repre- bookbinder s presz, upon which a book was bei»g bound ; a!s0, one representing @ fountain, with @ sugar I of goszamer fineness. The young men of bookbinder-dom seem to be im bigh favor with the ladies—pe beg Sen- ator Beaton’s pardon, the femalez—and with mere space at our disposal it would be pleas ant to dweli gomewhat at length upon the charms there arrayed. Revier oF tug Insane.—In the Senate, yesterday, Mr. Brown introduced a bill sup- plementary to an act to organise the institu- tion for t of the Dis 3, 1856 This bill provides that no insane person, not charged with any breach of the peace, shall r hereafter be confined in the United States jail or penitentiary in this District. The Sec- retary of the Interior has power to grant his order for admission into the Government hos- pital for the insane any insane person unable to support himself who resided in the District at the time he became insane, upon the certif- icate of any judge of the cirewit or criminal court or any justice of the peace. The order of the Secretary of the Interior authorizes any police officer or constable to assist in carrying insane persons to the hos- pital, the expense attendant upon which is to be borne by the friends of the insane or by the local authorities of said District. The fourth section allows any indigent in- sane person who did not reside in the District at the time he became so in like manner to be admitted upon application of the corporate authorities ef the cities of Washington or orgetown, at the expense of either of the said cities. if any person charged with crime be found in the court before which he is charged to be insane, the court is to certify the same to the Secretary of the Interior, who may order him confined in said hospital, and if he be not in- digent his estate is to be charged with the ex- penses of support. Any person becoming insane in the peniten- tiary during his sentence is to haye the same privilege of treatment in the hospital during the continuance of his mental disorder, unless it be the opinion of the physician of the peni- tentiary and the superintendent of the hos pital that he is so depraved and furious in his charac as to render his custody insecure example pernicious. When restored to sanity the superintendent of the hozpital is to give notice tothe judge of the criminal court and deliver him over in obedience to a proper precept. ~ = The ninth and last section allows any per- son giving bond, with security approved by the circuit or criminal court, with condition to restrain and take cyre of any independent or indigent insane person not charged with any breach of the peace, to do so until restored to sanity. Said court or courts or judge thereof may in its discretion deliver over such insane person to the party giving bond as aforesaid. sane of the army and navy and ct of Columbia, approved March SeLv.—When a comedy, clothed in beauti- ful language, reproving in a gentle manner the follies and foibles of our fashionable soci- ety, presenting to the mind a picture of home life as it exists, is carefully placed upon the stage, and interpreted by artists of brilliant taleat, «jt will be sure to pay.
