i EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Nationa TaeaTRE —The new season with Miss Fanny Morant as manageress, opened last night, most satisfactorily. There was a good audience, the house was comfortable, and the acting superior. The part of Peg Woffing- ton was admirably performed by the fair manageress, whose appearance on the stage was greeted with loud applause Mr.C B. Hill as Sir Charles Pomander made a decided bit. Miss Ellen Morart as Mabel Vane was received with deserved applause. Our old friend Glenn was excellent in the part of James Triplett—indeed the cast of the piece generally was remarkably Upon the conclusion of ‘‘ Masks and Faces’’ a loud demand was made by the audience for the fair lessee, Miss Morant, who responded to the call in a neat, modest and graceful little speech, in which she returned her acknowl- edgements for the brilliant audience and an- nounced jhat she had assumed the manage- ment of that large establishment and would offer cuch novelties during the season as would merit the approbation of a Washington audi- ence, to whom she looked for a generous sup- port in ber new undertaking. To-night an extra bill is put up for New Year's, commencing with tha sterling com- edy, * The Love Chase,’’ to be followed by the sprightly petite comedy, “The Maid of Munster,”’ the whole to conclude with the droll mythological burletta of *‘ The Muses by Starligbt.’’ The famous Ravel Troupe, including the immortal Gabriel, have been engaged at the National, and will shortly appear Wasaixeton Cincus.—Most agreeably were we surprised upon entering this newly-erected Circus building last night, to find it so com- plete in its various departments. Altogether, it is the most comfortable structure for such purposes ever seen here; well warmed, seats conveniently arranged, and pitched at an angle steep enough to enable the spectators to see all the details of the ring performances with entire ease. The building was brilliantly lit up with gas. through an apparatus inge- niously adapted to the purpose by Tcheifiley. The wonderful feats of the Ferranti Family and Monsieur Debach—the side-splitting com- iealities of Myers, the Clown, and bis cvadju tors—the dashing equestrianism of Madame Tourniaire, and the superb posturing of Foster Hawkins and others, kept the audience well amused through the entire evening The manager, confident that there is no company equal to his now performing, offers a wager of one thousand dollars to any person who will present the equal of either Madame Tourniaire, Mons Ferranti, or Mons. Debach; and we willingly bear testimony that they will be found hard to beat Two grand performances will be given this New Year's day, as also on Saturday—after- noon and night. ALEXANDRIA AND WASsuINGTON RAILROAD. This road has, so far, proved a great advan- tage to the travelling public, who have lib- erally patronized it. Up to Monday evening 2,257 passengers had passed over it. The officers are polite and attentive, and though the time made is not swift, yet the officers deem it best to run the trains with regard to safety rather than great speed. The average Tunning time between the depot and the Long Bridge is twenty minutes. The passengers are conveyed from the south end of the bridge into Washington city in fine coaches, and the whole ride is a very agreeable one.—Alezan- dria Gazettes. Ustawev. Assems_y.—On Tuesday after- noon a complaint was made to the Captain of the Auxiliary Guard that a large number of persons, white and black, were assembled in a house in the Second Ward, drinking, gamb- ling, and annoying the neighbors. atch- men Norwood and Birch went t» the house and captured four of the prineipals, who were retained in the guard house until yesterday morning, when they were ordered to pay a fine of $5 and costs each. The house where they met was kept by a white person. The names of the parties arrested are Jas Smith, ae Dowe, Edward Solomon, and Chas. H. Town. Passinc Dowy tae Avexve this morning our attention was attracted by a large crowd pressing arcund our friend Shillington’s store All seemed intent on passing in one door and out at the other, only stopping a moment in- side. We followed in with the crowd to learn the cause of so much anxiety, when ‘“ Ledger, sir? New York Ledger, sir?’’ greeted our ears It seems the New York Ledger for Jan- uary 10 had just arrived. and our literary friends were intent on reading the admirable tale by Emerson Bennett, entitled ‘‘ The Ref- ugees: An Indian Tale of 1812” * Naveaty Boys.—There is a fierce dispute going on between the boys of the Navy Yard and those of the Seventh Ward, about the right to skate on the ice in James's Creek— each party claiming the exclusive privilege Several stone battles have been fought, and sowe of the boys badly hurt. At the last fight fire-arms were brought into requisition, and a boy was wounded in the leg by a pistol shot. ‘These riots are becoming dangerous, and the interfercuce of the police is asked fur by the residents of that section of the city. A Presentation —On Wednesday next, at 12 o'clock. S. York AtLee, Esq., secretary of the National Monument Society, will, by di- rection of the Board of Managers, present to primary school No. L of the Fourth school district a fall length print of Wazhington, handsomely framed, ss an acknowledgment of $10 contributed by that school, and the continuance of a monthly contribution of 70 cents. The frame was presented by Mr M.‘T. Parker and the upholstering by DA Baird. This sebool is under the care of Miss Annie M. Like most young. Sters, the year 1597 enters the world in a du- bious state of smiles and tears, clouds and funshine, but we guess when fairly ‘done borning’’ it will turn cut a comely joyous new year. We wish it well; we do indeed. A Rescvg.—Last night, Watchman Hilton, of the Fire Ward, while conveyin; risoner to the Western Lock-up. was waylaid and knocked down, snd the prisoner rescued. The watchman, being unable to make another arrest, went to the lock-up and reported the case. The officers immediately went in pur- suit of the parties, but they eseaped. Mr Hilton, though pa lly, is not dangerously wounded. — Crimixat Cocat.—On Tuesday, George Ed- wards. W. Baker and Andrew Jones were found guilty of riot, and sentenced to one year imprisonment in the county jail, and to pay @ fine of one dollar each. This riot vc- curred in the First Ward between several fire companies. John Butler, riot; one month in jail and one dollar fine. Joux Mornianty.-—A petition signed by mem- bers of the grand and petit juries and mem bers of the bar has prepared for presentation to the President for the pardon of Moriarty, who was convicted of manslaughter ef his child. The circumstances attending this un- fortunate affair, and the former excellent char- acter of the prisoner, enlisted nearly all con- nected with the court in bis behalf. SaLutes — About 12 o’clock last night, one might have supposed that a terrible riot was going on inthe beartof thecity Guns, pis- tols, &c.. were discharged in quick succession, acd the auziliary guard bad to interfere to prevect it. It proved to be the boys, who were firing salutes for the New Year. Loox ro Your Pockers —A number of sus picious jooking strangers have arrived in this city without baggage or ~‘ visible means of tupport ’’ and are to be seen prowling about the street corners in the vicinity of the ayenue hotels. The police have a watchful eye upon them. ——_ Tats New Year's Nigut abounds in amuse- ment«—the Theatre, Circus, Udd Fell: vee, Yenger’s Ball, &o., and it will be the public is not well ei ei The com- munity will verteinty bave a good time for one night, at least.
