= SSS LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Graxp Longe or Axcrent York Masons or tae District or Cotumpia —This body met on Saturday afternoon last at Masonic Hall for the purpose of installing the officers elect, and the transaction of other important business It was, as is usual on such occa- sions, largely attended by the brethren of the “mystic tie,’ and the representation from the subordinate lodges under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge, was full. The main features of the convocation were the hearing of the report of the committee on the Most Worshipful (rand Master’s Address, which was delivered at the annual meeting a few weeks since. This committee consisted of Messrs. B B. French, Y. P. Page, and H H. Heath. The installation ceremonies of the new Most Worshipful Grand Master elect, Geo ©. Whit- ing, as performed by Most Worsbipful Grand er Frailey, were most interesting and touching. Om vacating the Grand Mas- ter’s chair, which he had occupied for two years, Dr. Prailey made a most eloquent and feeling address, which was as fe ay re- ded to by Most Worshipful Grand Master hiting on taking his new seat. The new Most Worshipful Grand Master then proceeded to install Y. P. Page, Esq., Most Worshipful Deputy (irand Master; Jas. Gosler, Esq., Worsbipfal Senior Grand War- den; William M. Rand, Esq., Worsbipful Senior Grand Deacon, and 8. D. Mills, Worshipful Grand Marshal. We are informed that the entire proceedings of the Grand Lodge at this convocation were of the most brotherly and pleasing character; and, as the fraternity in this District is now most flourishing, we congratulate the members thereof upon the auspicious condition of their affairs at the close of the old and beginning of the new year The next annual convocation of the Grand Lodge will be held in May next. Tas Last or Lear Yrar!—Girls do you hear that? This is the 30th of December, consequently there remains but a brief day and a half more of leap year; and yet with folded arms you are idling away the precious moments. ‘Be up and doing! Put on your smart bonnets, your bewitching gray cloaks, and your rotary what-d ye-call-’ems, and sally forth with the determination to secure a geod husband before candle-light! Pounce upon single men of the ri sort wherever they are to be found—in the printing office, thecounting room, the workshop, the manufac- tory, or even in Congress hall, for undoubtedly there are honest members of Congress who will make excellent husbands. But your best field will be in workshops and manufactories. Don’t mind going up many pairs of stairs to attain yourend. The very best material for husbands is to be found in out-of-the-way cor- ners, where susceptible single men follow their occupations withdrawn from the world, and who, from retiring basbfulness, have probably in nine cases out of ten probably never set eyes on female form other than that of a mo- ther, or, meyhap, a maiden aunt. We bad decidedly less of all descrip- tions of disorders than usual on such occa- sions The only act of real villainy was per- petrated by a y of fellows, on Bridge street, on last Wednesday evening As they were passing down the street in the direction of Washington they met with a daughter of Mr. George Gray and a female house servant, (colored,) when one of the villains drew from | his pocket a pistol and fired it at the two fe- males. The ball or slug with which it was charged struck the colored female near the ankle, and passed up the leg and lodged in the flesh near the knee, inflicting a considera- ble wound. The ball had to be cut out by a physician Noclue has yet been had to the guilty parties. There is no news of a commercial character stirring with us. The closo of navigation upon the canal and river has a tendency to put a se- tious check upon all description of business which are dependent upon these two thoroug fares of tradeforthsirsupport Our mille, too, are doing but little, some cf them nothing. for the want of grain, and the seasou havingarrived for our mechanics to suspend imuch of their out-door business, causes our city upon the whole to present rather an inactive appear- ance. Two classes of our merchants are as busy ag bees, viz: the wood and ice ers. The interest which was at first manifested in regard to the Poll Tax and Suffrage Bill seems to be gradually dying out among those who take an active part in our town polities. ‘The act itself is still in limbo, and what will be its final fate, so far as the action of our City Councils is concerned, we are not pre- pared tosay The members of the Councila, with one or two exceptions, and their friends, the anti-Know Nothings, contend that, inas much as the act is one to change the organic laws of the Corporation, it ought, before being enforced, to be submitted to the voters for their adoption or rejection; and the opposition contend that the act is mandatory, and ought to be enforced instanter We presume, how- ever, that the Councila will be found rather too sharp to swallow the gilded bait which has been so cautiously set for them. The matter is one of too much moment to be trifled with ; and as the baliot box is the only proper tri- bunal for ite settlement, we incline to the be- lief that the Councils will finally send it there. We are at a loss to know why such a step should meet with opposition. cries aloud in the Consumption.” Mr f Ltv Hoarbouad uolre, 4 evil, aud give you sweet repose for your present sleepless nights.
