EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tar Foss ws rue Fawtiy'—Tae WAR or vas Rivat Roses! '—“A Frw More Lerr or raz Sawe Sort!!!""— Decewner 27, 1856. To the Editor of the Star I cannot allow the purported official pro- ceedings of the Jackson Democratic Associa- tion im connection with the inaugural proces- aion on the 4th of March next. as given to the public, with the Union's editorial endorsemea', on the 25th of December, to pass without some notice frem me, reluctant as I am to appear publicly in the matter. The official account of the proceedings to which I refer conflicts, in my humble opinion, with the facts as they occurred, and to some extent, affect my per- sonal integrity. There is a defectiveness of memory apparent on the face of the publica~ tion; for while at the commencement the Pres- ident of the Association certifies that he was elected to be Chief Marshal for the 4th cf next, yet at the close he attaches a note de- elaring that he was not so elected.* Such obliviousness in regard to one important point leaves it to be presumable that errors may exist as to other points—in one at least is emphatically thecase. The entire pro- ceedings of the Jackson Democratic Associ tion, as detailed in the Union of the 25th inst. as having transpired on the 22d, occurred, if they occurred atall, after the Association had regularly and constitutionally adjourned. At the early stage of a meeting held on Monday night last, a resolution having been offered and ‘the previous question moved thereen, desig- natieg Mr. Ratcliffe as chief marshal for the 4th of March next, that gentleman, who was in the chair, called me to it—I being the fir-t vice-president. Many motions were made with a view to stave off action, when, finally, a motion to adjourn having received, as 1 be- lieved, a decided majority of the votes present, I declared the Association adjourned until the regular monthly meeting. There the record ais: and if any further proceedings took place on the night in question they are invalid and unconstitutional. Tuos J. Gatr. *The official account of the proceedings was repared by the Secretary— not the President ence we take it, the discrepancy to which Mr. Galt refers. Wesver Caare..—This beautiful edifice is now fully prepared for occupation, and divine service will be performed in it to-morrow commencing at 11 o'clock, a. m, the Rev. Mr Krebbs, pastor of the church, officiating At night, the presiding elder of the Potomac stistrict, the Rey. John Lanaban, will preach st the chapel before the Young Men’s Chris- tian Association: subject: “ The Divine Reve- lation of the Bible.” Thif is the second Jecture of the course. We congratulate the energetic body of gentlemen concerned in erecting this handsome and convenient church upen the satisfactory financial condition in corel they emerge from the undertaking Oa Sundav last, the occasion of the dedication, some $5,300 was raised in money and sub- soriptions, leaving a debt of probably less than one thousand dollars to be met. The public will not forget that a concert of sacred music, under the efficient superiutendence cf Prof. Daniels, will take place at Wesley Chapel on Tuesday next, the proceeds of which will go towards the debt of the church. Natroxan Treatne —The very suceessful engagement of Mr and Mrs Florence closes to-night. We are pleased to note with each reappearance of these performers some im- provement upon their admitted excellence, showing careful study and a determination to emit no point, little or great, tending to per- feet them in their profession. Mr. Florence 38 not only one of the best representatives of Irish character upon the stage, but he is almost equally as good in every other line he assumes. Of Mrs. Florence, the London Times says z She literally sparkles with vivacity; and, while much of her attraction depends on the novelty of the character she represents, she must convince every spectator that, under whatever circumstances she made her studies of bumanity, she still would have been an in- telligent and efficient actress "’ The bill for to-night is a fine one, and all Washington play-goers should tarn out to bid farewell to these favorite performers. A Parrcuep Breatn.—Who would have a disagreeable breath, when, by using Dr La Cour’s Balm of the White Water Lilly asa dentifrice, it can be rendered sweet, and leave the teeth white as alabaster? Puta drop on your tooth-brush and wash the teeth night and morning. A Beautiful Complexion may easily be ac- quired by using De La Cour’s Balm of the Where Water Lilly. It will remove tan, pimples, and freckles from tke ekin, leaving it soft and rosy. Weta towel, pour on two or three drops, and wash the face night and morning Shaving Made Easy —Wet your bruah and pour on two or three drops of De La Cour’s Balm of tha Whete Water Lally, rab the beard well, and it will make a beautifal soft Price fifty cents. Forsale by Charles Stott, Washington, and by druggists generally. A Jcpires.—On Tuesday evening last, the Democrats of Berry’s district, Md., celebrated, at Colesville, the recent election of Buchanan and Breckinridge by a brilliant illumination, grand display of fireworks, speeches, eupper, &e At seven o’clock the meeting was organized by appointing Mr Jobn Harding president, and 4 ©. Higgins and Frank Lazenby secre- taries. Congratulatory epeeches were made by Dr. E.T Davall and Mr. John Mason Clark: The hardy farmers turned out in goodly num- bers, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather. Assavtt.—Last night, as watchman Nor- wood was going from the northern part of the Second Ward to the guard-lhouse, he was at- tacked by 2 gang of colored persons who threw stones and other missiles at him. The watch- man rushed in among them, and succeeded, after hard fighting, in securing one of them— Jacob Pindell, who was taken to the guard- house aad made to pay a fine and costs. Daowsxen.—Yesterday afternoon, about 4 o'clock, as several small boys were skating on the Potomac, opposite Monument Square, one of them, James Exerline, aged about thirteen years, accidentally ran into the path made by the tow boat and was drowned, his little com- panions being unable te rescue him. He was an orphan. and had been living in the family of his uncle, Mr J. T. Mr. Editor :—I noticed in your paper of the 17th instant a communication over the sig- nature of an ‘‘ Obserrer,’’ who, on account of the approaching wifter, has been so suddenly moved by ‘feelings’? of sympathy for his ‘“kind,’’ as to cause him to ‘‘violate”’ his ‘‘re- beat nature and ‘‘ eome before the public’’ for the purpose of complaining against what he is pleased te term the “ mighty barricades”’ which are presented on the avenue in the shape of ‘hoops’ And while noone regrets more than myself that one of our sex should crowd so modest a gentleman as ‘‘ Observer’’ seems to be off the ‘crossings,’ still I think he de- serves to walk in the mud for not possessing instinct enough to “ retrre’’ tosome safe Place, and there wait until the “ barricade’ he speaks of has fairly passed him But [ must be permitted to say, in this con- nection, that heretofore I have been led to be- lieve that whenever such gentlemen as ‘‘ Ob- gerver’’ takes to the mud on meeting alady, it is always done in order to show their gal- ‘antry for the sex, and feel somewhat sur- prised now to learn that, in giving way toa /ady on the “crossings,” they do ‘* violence”’ to their ‘‘ feelings ’’ ‘‘ Observer,’’ however, in his zeal to serve his kind forgets that the crossings are often ‘barricaded’ by others than those wearing ‘‘ hoops ;’’ and were it not for the retirement in which he seems to have lived, he might have known that the “ unfor- tunate individuals’? whom he represents are as often seen barricadtng the ‘ crossings ’ by their zig zag movements, caused, no doubt, by the ~‘ racks” they carry in that append- age which adorns their pericraniums as we are by our “‘ hoops.’” And it is somewhat suprising that a gentle- man possessing so much of the milk of human kindness as ‘* Observer,’ did not do more vio- lence to his feelings and call the attention of the City Fathers to the abatement of that ob- stacle in the way of safe locomotion on the Avenue too; but I suppose the reason why he did not is, that, a ‘+ fellow feeling often makes us wonderous find *’ In closing this hasty and desultory communication, I would ask in all gravity, as an interested individual, and in behalf of my sex, which is the ‘ sub- ject’ “Observer’’ wants to ring to the “ no- tree’ of the ‘City Fathers’’—that of the “ crossings’ or the propriety of our wearing ‘** Hoops?’ For, from the obscure manner in which his ideas aro couched one cannot tell for the life of them which *‘ annoyance’? he would have the ‘City Fathers’? legislate upon. And althoygh neither a “ bloomer’’ or an advocate for ‘‘woman’s rights,” still I do maintain that we have as much right to walk on the avenue with our “ hoops,” although they may ‘‘annoy’’ ‘ Observer, ’ as he has to promenade that street with a cigar in his mouth puffing the sm in our faces to our great discomforture and ‘‘ annoyance.’ In- deed, we find our “ Aoops’’ of great advan- trge, as ‘‘4arricades,”’ in keeping at a reepec- t ble distance such “ unfortunate individ- w ‘s.”?
