ING ST LOOAL INTELLIG SS NCE. Ax Usper-Grovsp Ramroap AgEst Cavest —Mesers William Garey and Wil- tiam Massey, residing near Ball's (ie Roads, in Alexandria connty, Va , arrested a man on Tuesday morning last, who gave name as Cornelius Hughes, and asys he is from Con- necticut, for attempting to induce a slave of Col. Wm. Minor, hired by Mr. Garey, torun off. Hughes was carried before Justice Wes- ley Carlin, who, after hearing the evidence, committed him to jail to await an examination before the County Court, at its J; anuary term. It 2 that Hughes saw Col. Minor’s slave in Washington, an a then to per- susde him to escape, but the negro refused, and told Hughes if he would accompany him home. he would go off with him next morning. Hughes went to Mr. Garey’s with the negro, and staid all night without Garey’s knowl. edge; the negro, however, at day break in- formed Mr. G. of the circumstances, and thus led to the arrest of Hughes. Hughes gave the boy written directions how to make his escape, with the address of a house in New York city, whence he would be for- warded further north. He admitted to Jus- tice Carlin that he had given that paper to the negro, and said his object was only to get the $25 from him. promised by the negro for his assistance. There was found on Hughes (who seems to be a machinist) a free pass for himself over the railroads from New York to Washington He says he has two sisters living in New York, and appeared anxious to pre- vent an account of his arrest getting into the newspapers. The p2per furnished by him to the negro, according to his own edmission, embraces the necessary proof for his convic- tion. His punishment will be confinement in the State’¥ prison not less than two years nor more than fire. Tae Axxiversary of the Sabbath School of the Assembly's Church was held last even- ing. At an early hour the spacious chureh was filled with an attentive audience. The speakers stand was beautifully decorated, and the programme of exercises showed great diligence and taste. Dialogues, Recitations, &c_, by Misses Mills, Lord, Robinson, Phillips, Davis, Banks, Essex, Wells, Powell, Lowry. Holland, Redstrake, Gardner, Allen, and Masters Spearing, Hoover, Miller, Banks, Rawlings, Powell, and others, occupied the evening.—whese efforts delighted the hearers. Among the interesting incidents was the pre- sentation to the First Superintendent (Mr. W. J. Redstrake,) on the part of tho teachers, through Col. Hutchins, of four volumes of Jay’s Exercises The Voluntary on the or- gan by Prof Dennis, under whose charge the choir of this church has attained a high rank, was well performed.
