Also, one sending in the nominations of Hugh Dougherty and Joseph Mitchell as po- lice constables a. Mr. Busey asked that the nominations be laid over for the present, on account of the absence of his coll © from the city; and they wore passed over informally. Mr Riggs, from finance committee, reported adversely upon the petition of Geo. B Todson, and asked to bedischarged from its further consideration ; discharged - Mr. Riggs, from same committee, reported a bill for the relief of E. and J. Traverse; which was passed. x Mr Riggs, from same committee, reported adversely upon the bill for the relief of N. B Smith; and the vote being taken upon the bill it was rejected. Also, from same committee, a bill for the relief of George Miller; which wvas passed. . Mr. Riggs, from same committee, reported back the joint resolution in relation to pay- ments pad 2 by property-bolders on erroneous assessments for pavements in square 728, with a recommendation that it with an amend- ment designating the fund from which the de ficiency arising should be paid. — amendment was adopted, and the bill pasaed Mr. Emery. from gag the co committee, reported 3 bill cha g the couree of the sewer leading from the northwest corner of Thirteenth street to H street; passed Mr. Busey stated that in transmitting the bill relating to markets to the other Board, the amendment fixing the license for butehers’ stalls in the Centre Market had been inad- vertently omitted. As a means of reaching the amendment he offered a resolution re- transmitting the bill to the other Board and asking its consideration of the amendment; adopted. ; ir. Busey, from police committee, reported a bill for the relief of G@. Vanderwerken; passed. Council bill for completing causeway run- ning along M street south, frcm Fourth street east to the Navy Yard was passed. Also, Council bill for paving footway on east front of square $47 Council bill for paving footway on south front of squares 795, 822 and 846 was referred to improvements committee Bills for the relief of Alexander Adama and Thomas H. Benton were referred to finance committee. Council bill appropriating $1,200 for extend- ing the wall along iber creek, was passed. A communication was received from the Mayor in answer to the resolution of enquiry As (to the result of the examination of the sc- counts of the lete collector of taxes, R. J. Roche, in which the Mayor states that the committee of investigation have made no re- port to him, and that he has received no com- munication from Mr. Roche in relation to the matter ; referred to finance committee Mr. Miller offered a resolution instructing “the city surveyor to survey New York avenue detween Thirteenth and Fourteenth streete weet, and report the proper grade, the cost of grading, graveling, repairing gutters, &c ; Pe An answer was received from the Surveyor to a resolution of enquiry in which the Sur- veyor states that he has examined the assesa- ment made by Thomas J. Barrett for the pay- went of the cost of grading the alley in square 4686, and finds the calcalations strictly correct; referred to finance committee Mr. Busey offered a resolution requesting the Mayor to inform the Board if any indi- viduals have entered cuits against the Cor- poration for salaries alleged to be due them; adopted Mr. Miller called up the bill in relation to dogs. The bill requires a registry of dogs; an insignia upon the collars of dogs when licensed; aod its them to run at large, muzzled, in lieu of fastening them up as at present, on the Mayor's proclamation . A somewhat rambling discussion ensued, in the course of which much curious information was elicited in regard to dogs and their habi ially Seventh Ward dogs; after which the bill was perfocted and passed. Resisting Orricers —On Saturday night, Officers Gill and Lloyd made a descent upon a house in the Seventh Ward, where a negro man named Burk (who had previously com- mitted an assault und battery on the officers when a7 were making an arrest) was con- cealed hey found Burk hid between two beds, and four women attacked the officers and held them until Burk escaped. The wo- men were taken to the guard-house and three of them sent to the work-house; the other paid costs, and was dismissed. ArREst.—(n Saturday night last, a patrol from this place, broke up an unlawful assem- blage of negroes at the old Cotton Factory a few miles from town The whole party, near- ly, some thirty in all, were captured, and brought into town and placed in the wate house. The next morning they were brought before Justices Price, English and Summers, and panished according to law. The jury returned a verdict of “ Still-born.”’ Criwinatn Court —Yesterday, C. Krouse was tried and convicted in three causes, two of assault and battery and one of malicious mischief.
