H LANE, Gents Furnishing Store, 424 Penn, avenue, near 4 street. nov 12 Desperate VitLain.—Between seven and eight o’clock on Friday night last, some fel- low took his opportunity while the Baltimore train was coming in on the other side of the depot to enter office of the freight depot, and forcing open the money drawer took from it some two hundred dollars in money, the property of Mr. Stevenson. The thief was discovered by a young man on the premises, who gave the alarm by calling to the watch- man The thief immediately drew a pistol and fired at the young man, the ball whistling past his head and over his right shoulder. The thief now made off through the yard and over the fence, some ten feet high, like a frighten- ed deer, his pursuer sending after him three or four balls from a revolver, but which through the darkness of the night probabiy mi as the fellow succeeded in making good hisescape. In his burried exit from the freight office he missed some fifty dollars in small gold and silver coin, remaining in the drawer Suarrs Anour.—On Saturday, a young gen- tleman, whoisa stranger in Washingtou, was ““dene’’ out of fifty-nine dollars by a couple of genteel looking fellows, who met with him at the National Monument. It was managed by the brass ball, or the ‘ opium box in which the Chinese place their opium to keep it from spoiling *’ The young gentleman did not sus- pect that he had been swindled until he re- turned to his hotel and related the circum- stances, when he learned that he had been “‘sold ’’ Officers were consulted, but it is probable the information was given too late to assist them in arresting the swindlere. é Curious Wxaron.—Lact night, a colored min, Wm. Dixon, was arrested for disorderly conduct and taken to the guard-house. Upon searching his person, a very elaborate nonde- script weapon was fuund partaking of the characteristics of bowie knife and pistol. It was loaded and capped ready forservice. This morning the weapon wrs iden property of Dixon’s ereleriss and was t: from his money-drawer. Dixon was severely lectured by Justice Birch and ordered to give security for good behavior. The amoun‘ now due is $4,947 50, the greater part of which consists of this first indebtedness and from the failure which has attended the e: | ee efforts made for its liquidation, the arden fears there is jittle hope that this last amount will be materially lessened, byt an nounces his purpose not to remit any exertion to that end. The Carpenter's Shop has been closed and the convicts employed in that department buve been “farmed out” to a contractor, which course has resulted in an increased revenue compared with that realized from the sale of manufactured goods at auction. The Female Department (Mrs. E. F. Mar- ceron, Matron.) is ina healthy and prosperou: condition, there being an evident improve- ment in the department of its inmates There are at present eight female convicts, three white and five colored; a part of whom are employed in wasbiog, ironing and sewing for the male convicts, and the remainder in bind- ing shoes fur the shoe factory. Tho report of the Matron shows that during the past year there has been labor performed in this de- partment as follows: Uf shoes bound 2,038 pairs; clothes washed and ironed, 1,950 dozen; do. mended, 384 pair; do. made, 193 pieces, ex- elusive of some fancy work, and their own necessary requirements attended to. The healtn of the convicts, male and te male, has been, generally speaking, excellent, and their moral deportment, with a few ex- ceptions, of a satisfactory character. The attending physician, Dr. Garnett, calls atten- tion in a letter accompanying the report to the case of a convict named Warnes, who is subject to periodical attacks of insanity, there being no suitable place in the institution fo. the accommodation of persons in his lamenta- ble condition. The Chaplain (Rev R. R. Richards) has perfurmed his clerical duties with seal and ability. In his report to the Warden, he ex- presses the opinion that much in the ben- eficial results of his labors would be a rieoced by a small expenditure for books for the Library The books on hand are not only much defaced by use, but have beon re-pe- rused many times by the convicts. The num- ber of bovks now on hand, including a copy of the Bible in the possession of every con- bout five hundred rden recommends that a few hun- be expended for the purvhase of mew books for the library. The number of convicts in the 4rstitution on the 30th September, 1555, was sicty-five; simee that time, thirty-five have bven re- ceived, twenty discharged by expiration of sentence, and eight pardoned—leaving seven- ty-two confined Ostober 1, 1856.
