EVENING STAR. ee Jos Paixtine —Our patrons and the public are reminded that we are prepared to have their orders for Job Printing of every descrip- tion executed at the shortest notice, for the lowest prices and in the best and most satis- factory manner. All wanting such work done eannot do better than to apply directly at the counter of the Star office. LOUAL INTELLIGENCE. A Dervorasce Catasrropar '!—On Satur- day morning last, a fine little girl—Mary Sherman—aged about twelve years, was killed at the residence of her stepfather, Mr. Caleb Birch, in Alexandria county, Va., about six miles from this city. A brother of her atep- father, Charles Birch, a youth of about the same age, coming into the house on his way home from school, took up a gun which a per- sou on the premises had used some days be- fore, and had left uncapped for safety. Pre- suming that it was unloaded, the buy put a cap upon it, and dared his little niece to put her bead out of the window by which she was —e As she did so he pointed it at her, and, intending simply to a rey acap forher amusement, fired a load of bird shot into her face. The poor child rushed to her mother and fell at her feet A messenger was instantly despatched for Dr. Wunder, who resides about a mile from the scene of the catastrophe. But ere he ar- rived, life was extinct in the poor little victim. She was a sweet child—dutiful, modest, intel- ligent, and deservedly a great favorite with all who knew her. The boy, on finding that be had shot his little relative, fled in great dismay from the premises to his own home. No one supposes that he had the slightest idea that the gun was loaded. ‘he remains of poor little Mary were buried yesterday afterhoon, and were attended to the grave by a large concourse of sympathizing neighbors and friends. This deplorable catastrophe adds another to @ long list of almost similar tragedies and shows the danger of entrusting fire-arms in the hands of thoughtless chiidren under any circumstances. Tas Gas Liguts —We learn from an officer of the Washington Gas Company, to whose notice the Star brought recent complaints against the condition of the lights in front of the Post Office buildings and on the Avenue, that they (the company) have nothing what ever to do with either lighting or keeping those particular lamps in order, which ore under the charge of persons omployed by the Government. Ascomplaints are not now made concerning the condition of the lights else- where in the city, it follows that the trouble is not the result of the short-comings of th- company, but of inattention, or something of the sort, onthe partof those whose duty it may be to attend to them. in connection with this matter we have to say that the size of the burners on Penn«y! vapia avenue has grown smaller of late. They seem, of late, to be smaller than those on the narrower cross streets. If they lave been altered in that way, the dim lights on Penn sylvania avenue ere already accounted fv: The street being much wider than the cross streets, an increase of the size of the burners would be necessary to light it as well as the others (cross streets) are lighted. With « ce- creased size, of course wo are to have, until that change sball have been remedied by the Government officer in charge, only light suffi- cient on the Avenue to render darkness ¥ ble; while, elsewhere on the streets of Wash ington. the gas light may be all the public wish it to be. Moxvagr’s Soinezs.—Elsewhere in our ecl- umos will be found the announcement by Profsssor Munder of his course of soirees (on Wednesday evenings) for the season. From | observation we can say that Professor under is one of the very best teachers of dancing within our knowledge He brings, in the first place, a great stock of patience and temper to his —qualities most requisite but not always fourd in a teacher ; be bas a thorough theoretical and experimen- tal knowledge of his profession; and best of all, @ remarkable facility of communicating this knowledge to his pupils These soirees will, we os apes demonstrate the great progrees made by his classes in the few lessons already received, and will otherwise be found most agreeable entertainments for the public generally. The terms, we presume, are more favorable than have ever before been offered in this city for similar B prone and the lovers of the healthful and invigorating dance will, doubtlesz, eagerly avail themselves of the opportunity The course commences on Wednesday evening next. Tae Mice —Readers of the Star will re member that a few months ago residents of the Fourth Ward were serivusiy annoyed by @ gang of juvenile rowdies called ‘ Mice,” who committed various depredations in that Waid. The major portion of the original party seem to have scattered, and it may be, turned their attention to creditable employ- ment. But another gang of “Mice” have taken their places, and greatly annoy citizens in that Ward by pilfering, defacing property, indecent conduct, dc. This gang consiste of ebildren quite as small as the former gang: and the police officers, though they dislike to punish children so young, find it absolutely necessary to adopt the same course with them as with Whether the punish- iest on the parents or the children, parents must decide bich should be punished, children from nine to thirteen years of age guilty of such acts, or the parents of such children, is a question with the police, and cannot be decided by them until it is ienown that the parents do or do not their duty toward their children. Uncicaysep Deacers —Several of the li- msed dealers in our city markets complain chat individuals make it their business to in- terfere in their sales by underselling thew, which they are enabled to do by huckstering without license. Persons who engage in the business of huckstering without having ob- tained a license, are liable to a fine under the Corporation law.1The sales complained of are not made in the markets; every housekeeper Knows that underselling has been seldom beard of there in the jast three months; but it is said that persons not engaged in the busi- ness receive provisions from Unio, New Jer- vey, Pennsylvania and New York, which they eell to their neighbors at lower prices than are asked in the markets Whether this comes under the law we are unable to say—the deal- ere contend that it does. There is a way to test it. Maret Ronsery.—This morning, Mr J. Peddicord, bacon dealer, on going to his stand in the Centre market, discovered that some vne bad broken into it and robbed him of ba- con and dried bees to the value of about $125. The front of the stand had been opened with a crowbar, between twelve o’clock last night and daylight this morning. This sort of mar- ket Sere | was successfuliy practiced last year, and the only parties arrested were some small boys, who were supposed to be agents for older thieves Larceny —Yesterday, Mr Daniel Genau. who residesin the Fifth Ward, walked out with his wife to visit some friends, leaving his house in charge of a young German, au apprentice. Upon his return be found that the boy had eloped, and upon examinirg a drawer where he kept his money. he found that missing too, as well as a variety of arti- cles ofvalue The amount of cash taken was forty-nine dollars. The boy has not been ar- rested. — Carp Wair ~—Harry W. Powers, the well known Card Writer, is again at his post in the National Hotel inthis ci.y Mr. P ig upsurpaesed in bis line, get'iag up as beauti fal visiting cards at reasunable prices as were ever written or engraved anywhere. Be sure to give him a call. We have before us just now various specimens of his professivnal skill that may be creditably exhibited in any city of the world. Avagx.— About 5 o'clock last night an alarm of fire was caused by « brilliant light to the east. The fire companies wers calied vut, and went far enough in the direction of the light to discover that they could not be of service, and they returned to their rendes- vous It is sup that « fire was buraing io the woods of the adjoining county in Mary- tand Narttonat Tazatre.—Look out forthe great spectacular drama of the Naiad Queen to- night. Look out for Jo. Jefferson in the part of ‘‘Schnapps.”” Look out for the sixteen blooming Bloomer Warriors. Look out for i transformations, gorgeous scenery, and a grand display all around. Jefferson has had a hand in the present ra oat of the picce, and we may expect something rich, rare and racy. The box office will be open from 9@. m to 4} p. m. to-day, to enable the multitude to procure seats ARrest —Watchmen Bird and Norwood this morning arrested a man who gave his name as Wm. Johnson, and who was engaged in peddling hams about the streeta. His con- duct, and the fact that Peddicord’s bacon stand was robbed last night, excited suspicion that he was connected with that transaction. He was secured in the guard-house, and the officers went after othera who are supposed to be concerned with him. Accipent.—Saturday afternoon, a horse attached to a pussy get frightened and ran off inthe First Ward, passing through the streets at au alarming gait. On the route the buggy came in contact with a small colored child, which was knocked down and its head badly cut The child was taken to o drug store near by, and after the wounds were dressed it was taken home by its mother Cincuit Court.—The case of Crump vs. Clark was given to the jury on Saturday af- noon, and after an absence of about two hours they returned to the court room with a sealed verdict. This morning the verdict was opened and proved to be for defendant. This case been very interesting to members of the ar Music axp Danctna.—Two fine balls aro just on the tapis; that of the Marion Rifles at ‘Lemperance Hall to-nigSt, and the Boone Club ball at the Assembly Rooms on to-morrow night. A grand march, composed expressly for the occasion by Prof. Esputa, will be per- formed to-night at the ball of the Marion Ki- fies. Supers Bonnets —We advise our lady readers to call and inspect the beautiful sup- ply of Ladies and Childrens’ Bonnets just re- ceived and advertised by Cassidy in another column Particularly beautiful are the white velvet bonnets for lalies, and the satin ‘‘ honey comb’’ bonnets for children. Warrr —A friend residing in the Fifth Ward complains that the pumps in bis neigh- borhood are out of order. There is acom- plaint book in the Mayor’s office, where a complaint of this sort never fails to be seen by the Commissioner if it is there recorded. Tas Lanes of the Wesley Chapel Mite Sa- ciety continue their levees at Odd Fellows’ Hall to-right. We hope they will ba liber- ally patronized. Warce Retcrys.—A. Georgetown, Nov. 24 Several small children were made very sick yesterday, by chewing paper in which poison- ous drugs had been wrapped and thrown out of «ne of our drug stores by a thoughtless col- ored boy. The effects were such as to produce. spasms. Dr. Magruder was called in and ad-. ministered to their relief. We have not beem, able to hear from them this morning A villainous way of raising the wind (on finance) was practiced by a party near our wharves last night.
