A Bal- timore merchant, an old acquaintance of the bride, soon afterward makes his a) ance, and is very attentive to the lady and her hus- band. One evening, when the party were in @ fashionable saloon, the husband is called = for a aay time, “and during his absence elopem: neh sic between the lady saa her fi Person in an adjoining al- cove overhear’ the arrangement, and sends the husband an anonymous letter of warnin, The busband keeps a sharp look out; an last Wednesday, discovers that the wife had tel hed to the merchant, agreeing to meet him in Boston at 3 o’clock that i day The husband immediat informs his wife that he is going ‘‘ Down East;’’ and, coming to Boston, awaits anxiously the arrival of the train from Lowell. “On its arrival, the lady is mot by the mer- chant, and the twain get into a carriage and drive to the American House, the husband following in another carria; The husbdnd then goes to a lawyer, and at midnight, in company with his lawyer and a deputy sheriff, proceeds to the American House and surprises the coupli their room A stormy time en- sues, but the matter is finally settled, the hus- band taking $5,000 from the merchant and agreeing to take his wife again. It turns out now, however, that the ‘ injured husband ’— the ‘New York gentleman’ referred to—is (alleged to be) a fellow named Harris, former- ly publisher of a flash = in New York called the ‘Broadway Belle,’ and that his wife is (alleged to be)a noted pro: te. Tie Baltimore gentleman, whose name is Tiffany, on making this discovery, entered a complaint against the parties, and the guilty pair were both arrested on Mon mnday to answer the charge of conspiracy to obtain money. ‘** Mary,’ the heroine of this vulgar affair, is quite an artist in herway. She is dee- cribed as being a small, tender, lady-like little body, with qualities equal to any emotion— from the deepest and most touching sorrow to the grandest fascination—every quirk com- plete; every muscle trained; every gesture studied ; the eyes now emittin sparks to in- dicate sensibility to shame which she never felt ; and then softened to griet’s lowest and humblest measure. The oldest disciple of Dogberry could not withstand her tears.’’ So say the Northern papers Now, if any of ourreaders have @ curiosity to know who this ‘‘Mr. and Mrs. Harris’’ are, and their antecedents, they have only to refer to the columns of the daily Star of the month of April, 1855, where Mirgaret A Marris, (Hut- ton) ‘‘ No. 175 D sireet,’’ figures in a card, in which she gives the details of a personal ‘al tereation, or rather a series of them, with her brother, J. W. Hutton, (a table citizen, as all the rest of her family here are,) and states that her husband. who was mixed up in the affair, was formerly editor and pro- prietor of the Broadway Belle in New York city. The brother replied tothe card, and the controversy created good deal of gossip at the time. Mr. and Mrs. Harris then proclaimed their purpose to go to Europe, but it seems they rsued their travels in another direction. Their last speculation seems to have resulted in an unsatisfactory manner pecuniarily, as well as otherwise, since they were not only obliged to refund to the Baltimore merchant, but are in for some heavy lege! expenses. She was not noisy or violent, but appeared to be frightened; at intervals flitting from one point to another like a shad- ow. The watcnmen on that beat succeeded in overtaking her and finding out her resi- dence to which they carried her. Her de- rangement was thought to heve come from tke use of opium.
