Isqrest.—On Saturday afternoon, the body of Jobn Claxton was discovered in the canai, near Smith’s lumber yard, oa Sixth strest. The body was immediately taken to tho cen- tral guard house, to await the sitting of a coroner's jury. The news soon spread that the bedy bad been found, and ina very chort time ihe room was filled by per: anxious to know if there were apy marks of violence upon the body A jary was sworn, and Dr. Eliot proceeded to examine the body, and discovered but a cingle bruise pear the groin, not such a one as would be likely to produce death, and may have been on the body sometime previous to death. —— Luckett, being sworn, said that de- coased and himself went to the ball at Sase Prinee’s on Monday night; they were with two wemen; Claxton and himeelf wore both intoxicated, be not so muck as Claxton; was rot aware that any one bad struck Claxton, and did pot hear any one threaten him; when they (Claazton and Lackets) left, pursued them over the field, and witness sep- arated from bis companion about Sixth streat, near the stile; did not sec him sgaiu; wen’ back to find him, but saw no one but a bisck man en the field; the deceased had been jrinking and was intoxicated, but he was not a habitual driaker. A. Spring bad seen deceased that night at the bail, but knew nothing of the cireum- stances attending nis death. W. Jones had gone to the ball with 2 fri from Virginia; after dancing sever. 2 heard the rumor thatthe Plug Uylies were about; @rowcommeneed, and we succeeded in driving them frow tne house; in tho welee. tols were fired ; after the row was over, | ggested to my friends that if wo went away by Four-end-a-half etreet the other party would lay in wait and kill some of us, and we agreed togo by Maryland avenue; when I get outside, Mr. Claxton came to me and seid i had his shaw! ; I looked, and found that we had exchanged; I returned his shaw! and then went away, leaving deerased and his friend, with one or two others, there, ant al! quiet. Mr. Senjamin Frazier testified to taving seen the deceased between four and five o'clock Tuesday morning sitting by the enclosure of the Smithronian ground: ; he was very drunk and witness tried to arouse him, but could ; went away and returned to get him up, but he had gone, and witness eupposed he had got up and staggered away. Witnesses testified to the excellent charac- ter of the young max for industry and sobriety. With this evidence before them the jarors returned the following verdict The deceased was missing since Monday night, the 10th of November, 1356, on which night he had been to a ball in the Seventh Ward. He lett that houze in company with a friend, and was last seen. much intoxicated, near the enclosure of the Smithsonian grounds on Seventh street; and the jary believe from the evidence that he accidentally got into the caual and was drowned: and. farther, that de- ceased was poor and left no means. ‘The watch of deceased fyucd upon his per- con had stopped at one minute past five © clock, whica would indicate that hs fell into the canal at or about that hour in the morr- 19, The body was placed in » coffin shortly after the rendition of the verdict, und conveyed to the residenco of the father of deceased in Georgetown. The funeral took place at 10 o'clock this moruing. od + — Rowprism —It seems thit with the decay ef Know Nothingism in our midst, its creation, the unbridled rule of rowdyism which came in ite train here az elsewhsze, has received but slight check indeed. Tae Fire anv Riot or DAY Nr A fire—doubtiess the work of an incendiar: —was discovered in the brick stable occupied by Thomas McKeever, hack driver, corner of Pennsylvania avenue and Twenty-first street, in the First Ward, between 11 and 12 0’clook on Saturday night Two valuable horses were smothered, harnesses and carrii in- jured—the loss to the owner being in the neighborhood of a thousand dollars. The oo- on was siesed upon by rowdy spirits for another of those disgraceful riots which our citizens, from sad experience, now meely expect upon an alarm of fire. The Intelli- gencer says: ‘*Althongh the alarm given was loud and long no apparatus appeared, and not a spoon- fal of water was thrown. But all this time there was busy work not far off. Guns and istols were firing in rapid succession along ennsylvania avenue, and rocks and atones flew fast and fierce, endangering the life and limb of all passors-by, no matter who or what they were. This was kept up for the better partof an hour. Whilst the firing was bla- zing, a mancame up and walked cons icuously between the fire and the crowd wikh was looking on, carrying a revolver aloft above his bead, and daring any one to contest his surpassing prowess. He marched forward and backward in this way without any inter- ference, and left with the remark, ‘“ Uentle- ten, we have got yourre:!, come and take it.”” We undorstand that the reel of the Union Fire Company was wrested from some members who wero taking it to the firo and carried off in another direction, in order to be soused into the canal, but that some of the Auxiliary Guard recaptured and restored it to its proper guardians. ‘There is rerson to fear that these occur- rences will be folfowed by yet more riowus and probably bloody consequences. The tem- porary triumph of one party only goads the opposite to increased preparation and exer- tion, and, from the exasperation excited, ter- rible events may be expected. What makes the-e things most painful isthe reflection that in such conflicts it is not usually the partici- pastors that suffer muck, but innocent persons who happen to be by at the time.’’ We learn that the suction of the Union fire company was considerably battered before iit Was recovered by the company. Withits yearly increasing popularity we don’t wonder that this club has outgrown its old quarters and is now compelled to take s hall as large as Carusi’s saloon. On the same night the “ancient and honcr- able’’ Anacostia Fire Company No. l, give an- other of their ever successtul annual balls. Deviperate Murper —Between 8 and 9 oclock on Saturday night, a colored man named Enoch Smith (who sometimes officiated a3 a Baptist preacher.) received a fatal stab in the left side while standing quietly on the sidewalk on H street near the corner of Nizxe- tecnth street, in the First Ward. The weapon touched the heart, and Smith died almost immediately without being able to designate any person as the perpetrator of the deed. Nor waa any light thrown upon the matter at the Coroner's inquest. It appear to have beer an ect of wanton eapaaroeed villainy. The deceased leaves a family in the Seventh Ward iu the vicinity of the steamboat wharf. Much credit is due the participants for the handsome style and orderly manner that characterized the affair After a fine display of fire-worke, the crowd adjourned to the capacious court room, which was soon filled t» its utmost limits, thue disappointing many who could not gain entrance Dr. Hurdin called the meetirg to order, and introduced Mr. J.
