TriaL TRIP OVER THE ALEXANDRIA AND Wasainertox RatLroav.—The trial trip of the Washington and Alexandria Railroad was made last night. The locomotive, John T. ‘Towers, in charge of Mr. Wm. R. Newman, Engineer, having on board Mr. J. S. French and several other itlemen, left Alexandria Depot about 94 o’clock last night, over the road, to the Long Bridge Station, and re- turned arriving here about 1! o’clock. The brightness of the moon-light night was peculiary suitable for the trip and the engine ran over the road very smoothly, rounding the most dificalt curves, with ease We congratulate the energetic gentleman in charge of the road on his success, and rejoice, with the community, at the opening of Rail- way communication between Virginia and the capitol of the Union —Alerzndria Sentinel of yesterday. Nezpep—A Hovse or Correction —With- in a few weeks, several small children picked up from the streets have been placed in the Asylam for protection. Their ages range from seven to eleven years. Those now there, tender as they are in years, have been a lung time known to the aay ; yet the officers and Justices do not like to confine them where their morals are not likely to be improved by their associates. But the cold winter i proaching, and if these little children taken care of they msy be frozen to death in the streets, where they sleep uader boxes and on the door sills of houses When, when, when are we to have a House of Correction in Washington for these unfor- tunate children” Tue Nortaers Lisentigs Fire Compasy’s anniversary ball on Monday evening proved a delightful one to the very numerous and happy company present. In the course of the eveniog, during a few moments’ interval from dancing, a complimeatry presentation of a handsome daguerreotype, depicting the mem- bers of the am a d drawo ap fh & line in front of their engine house, was made to Thus. Donobo, Esq , who was present as an honorary member and steadfast friend of the company, but made through the hants of John L. Smith, Esq., who accompanied it with an apprupriate address, ts which the presentee 23 teelingly though unpremeditsiodly responded.—Jnte/- Jtgencer Taz Mission.—F street, ia front of St Pat- tick's, was crowded last evening, we hear, with persons of both sexes unable to gain en- trance into the body of the eburch. It is computed that near a thousand individuals, who endeavored to get witbin earsho* of the sermon of the night, were forced to retire dis appointed This ‘ mission’ has, so far, been one of the most successful marking the history of the Catholic Church in this country. The clergymen (of the er of ‘‘The Redemp- tionists’’) engazed ia it are all very eloquent men, and seem destiued. through their labors, to bring about a remarkable revival ia their Church throughout the Union; as their calling is lo go from one puiut to another preaching, Sc., ag they are now doing here. Peenau’s Operatic Trours —This strong and facile curp: preseut every vari ty of Ethiv- pian performance. Comedy, fare burlesque opera and dancing. In burlesque opera the troupe is especially celebrated, not only from the comic richness of the burlesques, but from the genuine musical talent evinced by the performers which is no ways inferior to that of more pretentious artists in real opera. This is the last night of the Perham Troupe. Pine —Last night, about 8 o'clock, a fire broke out in the Steam Carpenter's Shop be- longing to Baldwin & Soa, on 34 street, cast of the City Hall Lt iscupposed that iteaughi in the engiue room, to which the fire was main- tpeonfined. There were indications of a riot and the police aml guard concentrated in or- der to be in readiness for action, but the com- Panies returned to their ongine houses, and the crowd dispersed quictly. Wartcuwan Nonwovun —This active and ef- ficient officer, who was so severely injured when discharging Lis duty at the fire riot in the Seventh Ward on Monday night, is still cenined to his bed The wound upon bis nead from which be suffered most, is eup- = to have been inflicted with a hose pipe ¢ is not considered a dangerous wound, and, in a few days it is hoped he will be able to re- sume his duties. Tue Lorasras Farr at Odd Fellows’ Hall is agfinely. To-morrow, the German bat os will be present and a id. tim: an- ticipated. The fair is d to promote the success of a noble object and deserves the largest measure of patropage, : Growrn oF remarkable been the sul mark ; that many of our Sarvet eee citi- sens have really a very in: lequate idea of the manner in which ipiareematte oe on some enth street, for nee ; from — wharf to the group of gravel-wall oc! houses just erected nd the toll-gate there is a succes sion of bu’ many of them of a highly ornamental character, covering an extent of ground ine —— nope cps taty ry street in an; jer city e comming Much of the oredit for this re- is due to the enterprise and sagacity a few pioneer merchants, who planted themselves upon this outskirt of the city, as it was considered at the time, and have so built up trade as to have now set the current of business in that direction. The extent and varie'y of the stocks of goods displayed in some of these stores would strike one, too, 8s enormous, and not justified by the amount of business to be done, were he not rs ‘speoma as to the facts of the really re- markable amount of trade performed on this great Seventh street tho: hfare. The ex- amination of a single tore—that of R, B. Hall, 373 Seventh street—is sufficient to satisfy the most incredulous that a metropolitan stock of first class goods, as far out as four doors bo- yond I street, can attragt,.a constant flow of customers. To be sure he is obliged to sell a little cheaper than those who have to pay higher rents in the more crowded parts of the city, and this he can well afford to do We advise our readers who wish to keep in the progress of city improvements to pay a visit’ at Hall's dry store, 373 Seventh street. —_—_ Bors Ixcitixe R10Ts.—The officers of Re. lice, in reporting to the chief of police this morning exonerated the firemen of the city from any participancy in the riotous demon- strations exhibited by a portion of the crowd at the fire last night. The disorder originkted, it appears, with a boy some fourtéen or fifteen old, who ran down the street crying, ‘‘ Rally, boys! rally! here comes the Franklin.*’ The firemen were then at work and took no notice of the cry, but a very large number of men and boys, who were standing about rushed towards the ap- proaching apparatus, which proved to be the Union Hose Company. The chief of police wiil doubtless demand the strictest enforcement of the law in regard to minors. Tar Nationay Tagatee.—A correspondent writes us: ‘‘ 4 was one of the delighted au- dience last night, and am happy to say found the house comfortably warm There seemed to be but one expresgion, and that was unqual- ified gratification. {t is an indisputable and self-evident fact that Miss Pyne is beloved by the Washington public—not merely for her artistic skill, but also for her unassumed and lady-like manners, and for the evidence ot those qualities of head and heart which exalt, ennoble and adorn her sex. I predict this will be seen on her benefit night if the weather and temperature of the house should warrant it. I, for one, should be most happy to unite with others in tendering a substantial com- plimentary benefit.”’ A New Rector ror tue Caurcu or tue Eprpmany.—We learn that the Rev. Chas. Hl. Hall, of John’s [sland Pa. ish, South Carolina, bas received and accepted acall from the vestry of the Church of the Epiphany in this city to the rectorship of said church, vacated by the appointment of Rey. John W. French a3 chaplain at West Point. Arrests. —A. Columbus and M. Everything in the shape of political excite- ment in our city bas completely disappeared, and all parties excopt-e few of the more ultra sort are fast settling down fnto a cheerfal ac- quiescence in the result, We have never seem any victorious party so little disposed to exult over a defeated enemy, as the Democrats are at the present time he only indications of rejoicing among them visible as yet consiata in the sunny smiles which are all the time seen playing upon their happy faces. The ai tion (Know Nothing) take their terrible de- feat about as patiently as could be expected. when we consider how sanguine they were of success They seem, however, to be rapidly recovering from the shock, and their terribly elongated faces are gradually assuming their natural shape in: And all parties sre quietly returning to their varicus business avocations, which we presume they will find rather more profitable than the discussion of litios. From all we can learn we think it more than likely that our City Councils will on Pri- day evening pass an ordinance recommending the setting apart of Thured. the 20th, as a day of thank: . Such a step will doubt- less meet with the hearty approval of His Honor, the Mayor. Since the commencement of frosty weather we discover that no inconsiderable ions of our lumber men and wood merchant's piles take to themselves legs about day dawn morning, and quietly walk away. At th hour the night watch have retired from duty, and it is really amusing, as well as annoying to the early riser, to witners this class of thievos as they sally forth, and the stratagems they resort to for the purpose of securing the day’s fuel at the expense of their more forta- nate neighbors Yesterday morning, about daybreak, as Mr. John Paxton, butter merchant, was on his way to the centre market, Washington, some thief or thieves climbed up on to the hind part of bis wagon and relieved him of most of the supply which he had provided for the morning's mar! Mrs. E. Hughes was also relieved in a similar way of a keg of eggs. We take great pleasure ip calling the atten- tion of the public to the advertisement of our young friend, Mr. C J. Woodward, (furniture establishment, &e.) Mr. W. isa No.1 prac- tical mechanic, and all the furnitare chased of him may be relied on as to quality. As an undertaker we havn't a doubt but he will give universal satisfaction, as he served his time with one of the most popular who ever lived in this Digtrict, the venerable and lamented William King. Services are had every Sabbath afternoon at 3} in the new Mission church, (Episcopal) near the canal, east side of High street.
