EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Taz WAsatnaton anv ALexanpaia Rai- noap.—The Examining Committee of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad in its report to the stockholders, in view of the heavy ex- penses entailed upon the company by the Alexandria and Washington connection b; water, recommends a generous policy towards the Washington and Alexandria Railroad, and that such facilities of whatever kind as may necestary for its efficient operation, and as may be afforded without hasard of loss, should be promptly rendered The report says: “If necessity shall force it into associations unnatural to it hostile to us, we shall have received a anent injury ; for the connec- tion with Washington is a virtual prolongation of our road, that is of unavoidable and pecu- liar necessity to us. We therefore cannot but urge earnestly, tbat some immediate arrange- ment be made with the Washington and Alex- andria Company, and on just and liberal terms The present mode of connection not only entails direct loss, but creates much an- noyance and complaint.’’ Ivprovements ror Laptges.—Happening to drop in the extensive bazaar of Hopkins, on the corner of Sixth street and Pennsylvai avenue, we were greatly surprised at the rich- ness of bis extensive stuck of goods, imported direct from Paris nd the enterprising propri- etor expressly for bis own sales, which need only to be seen to find purchasers. After passing from the front into the rear of the store, the eye is struck immediately at the beauty and richness of the ladies’ fur department, goods for which there is a heavy tax laid on all nations of the globe, to supply his wants for his lady customers. We examined a set of — sable furs, originally costing three uodred and fifty dollars, which appear to be the richest things of the sort we had ever seen His whole stock of ladies’ furs is very large, fine and complete—none better were ever ex- hibited to the discrimination of a Washiogton public. Call and examine his stock; as sell- ing goods at cheap rates and exhibiting them freely are especial fortes of our friend Hopkins. Perwam’s Operatic Trovrr —Who wants to see and hear the greatest burlesque opera- tic, tragic, comic, pantowimic, farcical com- pany in the known world? What lady wants “a well known marriage- able gentleman with property in his own right valued at $50,000?”" What gentleman wants “a beautiful young and marriageable lady with property in her own right valued at $25,000?” Who wants a country seat in New York, a farm in Waldo county, Maine, a gold watch, a Genin hat, or any other of the three hun- dred thousand prizes in the Perham gift en- terprise. Such prizes as these are not to be sneezed at, and we apprehend one of the largest au- diences on record at Carusi’s on Monday night. See advertisement. Accipext.—Yesterday afternoon, a run- away horse dashed the vehicle to which he was attached with such violence against a tree-box, opposite the Star Office, as w throw the small boy who was driving some tea foot into the air, and falling he struck upon the pavement with a force which rendered his escape with life almost a miracle. Tue littie sufferer was taken by the spectators to Dy- son’s drug store, where he was kindly minis- tered to, and medical aid immediately pro- cured. Drs Jordan and Force examined the bedy of the little fellow (who bore his pains with remarkable patience) and though he was found to be badly bruised, no bones were — The boys name, we hear, is Row- and. OveRrLowine ConexegaTion.—We learn that the necessity for greater accommodations for worshippers at St. Patrick’s church is be- coming more apparent every day. The origi- nal building was erected some fifty years ago and as necessity required additions have been made to it since. The congregation, we are informed, now numbers some ix or seven thousand souls, and the capacity of the church is pot equal to the accommodation of more than a third of this number. We believe it has not yet been decided by those interested, whether the church shall be enlarged or the copgregatina divided. Row ix Temperance ALLey.—Last night the police was summoned to the alley in the rear of Temperance Hall, to quell a disturb- ance in which mon and women were engazed. The principals were arrested and taken to the ard house, and this morning appeared in the trial room One of the party—Thomas Fitsgerald—was badly cut about the face and bead. A man by the name of Bresnehan was also much bruised, and Mrs Bresnehan ex hibited a black eye produced by a blow from Fitzgerald. Justice Morsell, the officiating magistrate, meted out due justice to the par- ticipants in the diegraceful squabble. Sroxz Barrie.—Last night, two gangs of answer to the delectable slang names of *‘Mice’’ and “‘Bull-bats’’ got up a stone bat- tle in the neighborhood of the City Hall. Peb- bles flew thick and fast for a season, and the residents in that quarter found it prudent to fasten blinds and shutters. They were taken before Justice Birch, who disposed of them as follows: French Simpson, for ee house, fined $50 and $1 44 costs ; ward and Daniel Boston, Robert Bruce, Daniel Batson and John Gordon, gamb- ling, fine and costs; each $6.44. Batson was also sent to jail as a runaway. Daxeszrous —Many persons are in the habit of turning horses loose in the street, that they may go their etables Within a year past several persons have been injured by this practice Females and small children particularly are endangered, and the custom should be discontinued. Yesterday, a horse set at liberty in this way passed through sev eral principal streets in the Fourta Ward, causing a general stampede amongst the fe- males and children in the street.
