EVENING STAR. ‘LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Last Nieut Azout Towx.—Everybody was bound to be on the Ave last night, to get the earliest inklings of election news, as given out at the telegraph offices, political club rooms and large hotels. The news hunters had rather a time of it during the early part of the evening in co uence of the driving rain. It was dark and particularly muddy under foot, and gloomy and wet overhead. For a while the returns came in with tanta- lizing slowness, and the thousands of excited politicians abroad went —_s through the paddies ap and down the town, hurrying rest- lessly from olab room to elub room, and ocea- sionally making a break in the direction of the telegraph offices as if to intercept or hurzy up the news. Large crowds occupied the side walks in the neighborhood of the Sixth street telegraph offices and seemed disposed to main- tain their ground when the rain commenced, but it finally poured down in such blind- ing sheets that all hands scattered, inconti- nently, and sought shelter in the neighboring stores and hotels, under awnings, and any place where shelter could be found. The Jackson Association headquarters, at the eorner of Tenth street and the Avenue, was crammed with a remarkably good-na- tured crowd. No news sufficient to justify a guess had been received, but the Democracy seemed to feel in their very bones the premo- nition of victory. While waiting returns, various prominent Democrats were singled out in the crowd and called on for speeches, which call was generally complied with, and the speakers catching a tone from the po, ular enthusiasm of the audience, made some very spirited and telling off-hand addresses. A3 returns began to thicken and to give sure tokens of a Democratic victory the enthusiasm of the Democrats amounted to fever heat and there remained The Know Nothings scat- tered aboutjtown, seeming to find acramb cf comfort in the returns from Baltimore. All night night long, the city was vocal with defiant cries for‘ Buchanan”’ and ‘ Fillmore,” though towards the last, they were utterod with painfal hoarseness. Well, the country is safe! Wiear’s Fornitune Esranrisuwent —[n passing the fine block of buildings on Louisana avenue, between Sixth and Seventh streete, known as ‘ Varnam’s Block,’’ our attention has been frequently attracted by the various ornamental letterings covering its entire front, announcing the presence of a large furniture and upholstery establishment upon the premi- se?, but it certainly never cecurred to us that more than a room or two was appropriated thus But we find after personal examina- tion that the gigentic furniture establishment of Mr. G@ M. Wight occupies nine largo rooms or nearly the entire block. This enormous stock naturally comprises an almost endless variety of articles ia the house- furnishing line, and we walked through the suite of store and show rooms with almost the same interest we should have felt had they contained a museum of rare and costly curi- eaities. There were beautiful cottage ond chamber sets of oak, exquisitely ornamented; there were brocatelle sets, and plush sets, and » rosewood wardrobes, with mirrors and lined with birdseyem: ; there were beautiful wal- nut book-cases and office desks, constructed by Mr. Wight expressly for the public offices, and which were receiving their finishing touches in the work rooms There wera iron bedstead:, light, cheap and ornamental ; and iron chairs, of graceful pattern, designed for halls and pass- ages One large store room was packed so closely with chairs that a humming bird wou!d have been puzzled to find a passage. {n two adj.sining room: were sofas, lounges, marble mantles, and mahogany and rosewood furniture of the richest description, and here- abouts were some ladies suiting themselves ia their housekeeping arrangements, and ocea- sionally glancing at their pretty faces and graceful figures az pictured back in the large mirrors The housekeeper will find at this establish ment everything desirable, from a patent waehing machine down to the tinieet and most exquisite of workstands, and ail at prices to suit Row —Last night, a man who had been im- bibing a little too freely, kicked up arow near the corner of Sixth street and the svenue, and was arrested by the watchmen and police officers on duty there. As soon a3 he was ar rested, agreat crowd of persons gathered about the officers, aud by shouts of ‘rescue! knock them down '’’ 4c _, tried to frightea them from theirdaty. But they held fast, and struggied through the crowd to the guard-house, where the prigoner was safely lodged in the cell At that time he appeared to have friends in Bumerable, all of whom professed anxiety tu go bis security, perhaps because there was no probability of their g accepted ; but this morning they were very scarce, and the prison er would have been sent down if a gentleman who knew him, had not accidentally stepped in and superceded his fine and costa. Assavuct ann Barrery.—Dayid Fitzgerald Was arrested on Monday night for an assault and battery on Patrick Myers ‘The case was laid befure Justice Donn by Mr. Burr, the ar- resting officer. It was shown by the witnesses that when the assault was made Myers turned on bis assailant and struck him a severe blow on the head with a stone, causing a consider- able loss of blood. Justice Donn decided that both parties should give security to keep the peace Tagre was mucd Less Rowpyisy mani- fested last night than was apprebended ; in- deed with the exception of a sparring match or two it found vent only in partizan rallying cries. We have keforo us a statement that two young men named Walker and Young, Were set upon and severely beaten by a gang of rowdies while passing the Avenue House last night, bat the communication coming anonymously we have no means of decidi 3 tw its trathfulness. Danosrovs —Last night, a man was seized with a Gt of mania a putu, while standing in the crowd on the coruer of Sixth street and the Avenue. I[t was an awful case, and ter rifled all who saw it. He was secured by the euxiliary guard and confine the central station, where every thing possible was done for his relief I: was found necessary this morning to place him in the county jtil for greater security Is rag Caxan —Last bight, while the storm Was at its highest, « colored man and his wife Were hurrying to the Avenue from the Seventh Ward, and both walked into the canal They were assisted out by 4 gentleman who heard their cries for assistance, und who received as a rd the sincere thanks of the unfortu- Daies —_ Wasaixerostas Saor in Bautimore.—We are iaformed by @ gentieman who arrived from Baltimore Last evening, that aman named Darby, supposed to be from Washinzton, was shot atthe Eighth Ward polls in Baltimore yesterday. When our informant saw the wounded man he was thought to be dying Parse Rerort.—Yesterday evening. a re- — was circulated in this city that Sir G Taylor, a young man well known to the citizens of Washington, bad been shot and killed at the election in Baltimore We learn from a gentleman well acquainted with bum that such is not the fact. {t is impossible t say how the report originated Taz Hisersia Cron bad a pleasant ball last night at the Assembly Rooms; good order prevailing and every thing going off to the satisfaction of all present. We congratulate the Hibernia Club on making so promising a debut. Webber's capitsi cotillon band sug- plied the music “How Briewtty Beeixs tag Morning.’’ The Democratic hurricane whieh swept the country yesterday was a great purifier ; politi- cally, morally, physically, and ry other way What a pure, cl bracing atmos- phere, is noticeable to-day Racovenine —The Kichmond papers state that the Mr. Campbell, of this city, who was 80 severely inj upon the race-course at the Agricultural Fair in Richmond did not die as reported, and is likely to recover.
