EVENING STAR. adjuarters Jackson Dem, Association Heats November 3, 1856. * { PRESIDBNTIAL ELECTION RETURNS. SPECIAL NOTICE! All the telegraphic dispatches which may be received at the Union and Star offices up to 4o’clock on Wednesday morning will be an- nounced at the Headquarters of the Jackson Democratic Association (south side of Penn sylvania avenue, between Ninth and Tenth streets,) immediately upon their receipt. BoanD or ALDERMEN.—A nisin: night last night, and the members came in slowly A communication was received from the Mayor announcing his having signed va- bills. we etitions were received and appropriately referred; among others, one from Vespasian Ellis and others, asking relief fur advertising the tax-sale list Mr. Busey explained that in consequence ofa considerable portion of the property advertised for sale by the Collector (Mr MeCalla) for non- payment of taxes, not having been bid for, such property could not be sold, and the Col- lector had consequently not the sum in hand applicable to the payment of this advertising bill. The memorialists claim that forasmuch as the advertisement was authorised by a law of the Corporation, and the contract was fully performed by the memorialists, that it is in- cumbent upon the Councils to make provision for the payment of the balance of the biil. The petition was referred to finance committee. Mr Emery, from improvements committee, reported back the bill for grading and grav- elling I street north, from Connecticut avenue to Vermont avenue, with an amendment in lieu of the amendment of the lower Board ; passed over informally. Bill making appropriation for grading and gra g L street north from Eighteenth to Twentieth street west was passed. Also, bills for the relief of Samuel Payne, Alexander Bradley and Stewart and Eslin. Claims committee were discharged from con- sideration of the petition of Columbus 0 Wall. Bill for the relief of Dickinson Naylor was rejected. Mr. Smith, from special committee to whom was referred a bill regulating inspection of lamber, reported it back, recommending that it do not pass and offering a substitute; laid on the table and ordered to be printed in bill form. Council bill appropriating $500 for grading and graveling New York avenue from North Capitol to Boundary street, was referred to im- provements committee. Council bills for the relief of James Anderson, @. @. Coleman, Wealthy M. Hanson and Franklin Little were referred. Bill authorizing a curbstone to be set and footway paved on south front of square 75 was assed Bill dividing the Fourth Ward by G street north instead of F street north, and the Third Ward by K street instead of H street, was re- ferred to the delegations of these wards. Bill for the repair of L street south in the Sixth Ward was passed. The appropriation bill was taken up and assed with an amendment offered by Mr. aes striking out the appropriation for the payment of the salaries of the Commissioners of the Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Wards, and for the Intendant and Physician of the Asylum. A resolution granting the use of the Alder- men’s chamber to the management of the Me- chanics’ Institute for one night in each month was adopted. The bill for grading and graveling I street north was taken up and passed. And then the Board adjourned. Topp’s.—The stock of Furs now exh for sale by our enterprising fellow ¢ Messrs. Wm. B. Todd & Co., are superior to anything of the kind we ever before saw in a similar establishment out of New York city. There is nothing in the way of furs for ladies’ and gentlemen’s wear, from the cheapest up to single sets worth $250, which this house have not already on hand—sables, martins, lynx, erians, rabbits—from the cheapest to fars selling readily almost for their weight in gold. All the new patterns and concep- tions are to be found in their beautiful stock, which at least should be inspected by those who take interest in the progress not only of the fashions but of the industrial arts in all quarters of the globe; for they have speci- mens of the handicraft of all nations that ex- port such goods, and of all such goods as are sought after on both sides of the Atlantic. Their robes, too, are not a whit behind their stock on which we remark above Dove ror Firty Dottans.—Two members of the bar (legal) of Washington, recently made a wager that one of them would not trundle on to Capitol Hill a formidable wheel- barrow of oyster shells setting out onthe side- walk near the corner of Pennsylvania avenue and Sixth street. The proposed trundler bor- towed a cooks’ cap and apion, and, in them, performed his task with much zeal, stopping to blow and rest on the handles ever and anon. The other party to the wager and mutual friends rode in a hack at a convenient distance bebind, so as to cee that the work was fairly done throughout the whole jouracy. On the whole, this exploit was quite a Caper for one of the ton to be engaged ia Smor ay a Warcaman.—Sunday night, Watchman Hayzell returning from a “‘round”’ on his beat in the Sixth Ward came upon a colored man in the act of stealing. The Watch- man attempted to arrest him, and the fellow resisted, broke from from him, and was es When the Guard fired at him with a nd the ball took effect in the fleshy Dart of his thigh, which arrested his progress. Dr. McKim was sent for, and he decided that the wound was not dangerous. Mr. Hayzell Teported immediately to the Captain of the Guard, aud asked an investigation of the facts, which will be given as soon as the prisoner is able to be brought out. Evectios pay #48 Come '—The great crisis “which was to have arriven has erroven,”’ and the freemen throughout this happy land are doubtless marching up to the polls in eolid phalanx to exercise the glorious privilege of popular suffrage. The drizzling rain, though disagreeable, will gener serve a useful pur- pose in damping the belligerent propensitios of rowdy spirits. In thig city, the rain, or something else, has had a most tranquilizing influence, and the profoundest quiet and good order prevails, as far as we can ascertain, at the different ward precinots. First Baci or tae Hiservta Crun —The opening bali of the Hibernia Club to-night, at tue Washington Assembly Rooms, will be apt to be a most successful affair, since it is not only sure to be s capital ball in itself, but as everybody will naturally stay up all night to know who is President, in the natural course of events they will drop in at the Assembly Rooms and spend the time agreeably while awaiting the returns. Stitt in Daxcer.—The colored man But- ler, who was so badly beaten in a riot in the Seventh Ward, last week. by three others, (who have been arrested.) is still in danger of losing his eyeright. We are informed by Officer Gill that the sufferer cannot distinguich day from night. The principal in the affair will not receive a final hearing until the ex- teat of Butler’s injuries are ascertained. Centex Market —This morning the market was but poorly supplicd—at least, so far as country dealers were concerned. This being election day, itis probable that the farmers of the adjoining counties, who attend this market. have remained at home to exercise the right of suffrage. Cincvrr Courr.—The circuit court sat yes- terday and the docket was called over. As usual, the first week will be occupied with chancery and appeal cases. The room with its ‘mprovements presents a handsome appear- snee, aud the alterations seem to meet with eneral favor — _ Wate Retcans —Samuel Perry. drank and disorderly, reprimanded and Cinnisned “ Josep Brow. on a 4, (colured,) out alter hours, fine confined to their homes last ness and rain. GEORGETOWN OORKESPONDENCE. Guongzrown, Nov. 4, 1856. We learn that the Democratic Associations of our city have made arrangements to receive at their headquarters, Forrest Hall, all the election returns which may come into Wash- ington to-night. The Club rooms apd tele- raph office, which is also located in the same uilding, will be kept open until four o’clock in the morning. We command the individual that picked up our young friend’s cloak a few days ago (see advertisement) to fork it over forthwith, if not sooner. Sapgue he did become so warm upon the subject lities as to cause him to aed his cloak in the street and leave it behind, whose business is that but his and ours ‘* Honesty is the best policy,’’ and we there- fore command the finder to bring said cloak into court at once, and save us the trouble of calling names. From all we can learn, the revival of religion at the West Georgetown (Mr. Gotwalt’s) Meth- odist church is rather on the increase. The building is nightly crowded with attentive con- gregations, and the altar with anxious seekers of religion. The young men noticed in the Star of yes- terday as having been arrested by Officer Gross, was taken before Justice Fearson, where he confessed his fault and was. by the Justice, held to bail in the sum of $200 for his appear- ance at court. The weather this morning is ver: gloomy and rainy, unfavorable for all kinds of out- door bi 83. The steamer Columbia, Harper, is again at her wharf with a heavy cargo of merchandise from Baltimore, consigned to Hyde & David- fon Flour this morning is held at $6 87 for good standard brands. Wheat—$1 45a$1 48 for red, and $1 50a$1 55 for white. SPECTATOR Human Nature.—They tell a good story of two bachelors down East, who lived a sort of cat-and-dog life, to their neighborhood’s discomfort, for a good many years, but who had been at camp meeting, were slightly con verted, and both of them concluded to reform! ‘‘ Brother Tom,”’ says one, when they had arrived at their homes, ‘let us sit down, now, and I'll tell what we'll do. You tell me ali my faults, and I'll tell you of yourn, and so we will know how to go about mending of em. ‘*Good!” says Brother Tom. “Well, you begin.” “*No, you begin, Brother Joo.’ ‘ Well, in the first place, you know, Brother Tom, you witt tir!” Crack ! Brother Tom’s paw between Brother Joe’s “‘ blinkers,”’ and a considerable of a ‘‘ scrimmage’? ensues, until, in the course of about ten minutes, neither being able’ to — to time, reformation is postponed sine 4e. Tus Vi0LIN.—Slow and tender melodies, confided too often, now-a-days, to wind in- struments, are, nevertheless, never better rendered than by a mass of violins. Noth- ing ean equal the touching sweetness of a Score of first strings made to sing by twenty well-skilled bows This is, in fact, the true female voice of the orchestra—a voice at once passionate and chaste, heart-rending, yet soft, which can weep, sigh and lament, chant, pray and muse, or burst forth into joyous accents, as none other can do. An impercep- tible movement of the arm, an almost uncon- scious sentiment on the part of him who ex- Periences it, producing scarcely any apparent effect when executed by a single violin, shall, when multiplied by a number of them in unison, give forth enchanting gradation, irre- sistible impulse, and accents which penetrate to the very heart’s core —Ber/tos. i> Facts cannet be questioned, when the people ef avy country bear testimony fn maas, asin the case of Dr. J.
