EVENING:STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGH#HNCE. Ex-ALpgrMAs Suira.—A short time since we alluded to a rumor crediting ex-Alderman Jobn L. Swith of the Seventh Ward of thiscity with the intention of purchasing and publish- ing hereafter the Baltimore (Know Nothing) Democrat. “We now learn that this story is « mistake. Our comfortable, good-humored, fat friend entertalus no ides of aoandoning Wash- ington. Though Kpow Nothingism is essen- tially at a discount among us and is likely to be worth hereafter far less than nothin, he “has no desire to “cuss and quit’ his olt as sociations We rejoice to hear it; for though far asunder from him in politico: we Lave ever regarded him as a useful aud pudiic- spirited citizen of Washington, and shoujd re- gtet more than one can express to mias from among us hit genial countenance and graceful figure, more especially with the knowledge that he was actively engaged in burning a bole in his pocket through the meansof # Know Notbing-party paper speculation. A Racs.—The Sixth Ward is usuaily 20 quiet and orderly, that a serious disturbance i§ very seldom heard of, yot little incidents sometimes occur to excite the residents in va- rious porticns of the Ward. On Monday a man was seen to start from a house on Fifth street east at a 2:40 pace, and fast behind him a female who appeared to be very anx- jons to overtake him The spectators became excited, and business was suspended for a few moments to allow the workmen to see the sport. The man incregeed his speed, and the roman seeing that the gap was widening be- tween herself and , and that encum- bered as she was with clothing, there was no chance of overtaking him; gave up the chase The sffair grew out of a difference between the couple, who were husband and wife, and the former pot liking to settle on the terms proposed by’his apouse, thought proper to es- cape in the manner described. A Baavtirut Paraps —The military eom- ny composed of studentsof Georgetown Col ae was out in full force yesterday under their accomplished officers, and preceded by a fice brass band. They marched arowad the heights and took occasion to pay military honors to the venerable Major Nourse, by whom and his estimable family they were gra ciously received indeed, athisresidence Tney were accompanied by a dashing dozen of their fellow collegians ¢z cheval. The afternoon was beautiful, and pe pee young fellows appeared to enjoy their parade amazingly They made as fine a military show a3 can be recanted by any volunteer company in the ict of Colambia. We would suggest to them the propriety of parading at least once during the present delightful reason through the principal thoroughiares of Washington. Tur Cross Cases —Robert her appeared erday for x heari efore Justice Jaa. H Biseb, sad be eal Gate disposed of ag follows: gambling house case was dis- missed, Cross showing that the house was rent- ed by him to other persons atthe time. Pur selling liquor without license he was fined ten dollars and costs; an error which the Justice intends toworrect, the law making the penalty twenty dollars. Qn the charge of harboring slaves he was dismissed for want of sufficiet evidence. The peace watrant was dismissed ; the watchmen oa those beats declaring that they could not say they were afrai:i of Cross. Mr. Maury yee fog the Corporation and Mr. Martin for the defence. Democratic Meetines.—There is to bea Democratic meeting at the Battalion (ld Fields, Prince George’s county, Maryland, this afternoon, at which the Hon. John M. Causin is expected to speak. On Thursday, it will be remembered, the great Prince George's county barbecue comes off at Laurel, wkere the people will be ad- dressed by Senators Pratt and Pearce, Col. Thos. H. Holt, of Ky., and others. W. D. Wallach addresses the people on Fri- dsy night next at Kockville, and on the next day at the Poolesville, Montgomery county, barbeeue Someraixe sew UNDER THE Scs.—The res taurant opened on the south side of Pennsyl- Yania avenue J. De Saules is one of the completest establishments of the kind in Wash- ington The proprietor who is noted in this city for keeping, always, a first class house, has fitted it up with capital taste, sparing no reasonable expenze to make it an agreeable resort for gentlemen who have no fancy to ba thrown into contact with rowdies when seck- ing the comforts and luxuries of an eating- house. We perdict for his establishment the heavy run of business it deserves. Ax Uswitiixe Witsess —Yesterday, Mr. R. Pumphrey was summoned to testify in the eases of the Corporation against Kobt. Cross, but he refused to antwer the sammons. The officer tried to induce him te appear without making trouble, but he said he would rather go to jail than ewear against Cross. At the time of trial be did not appear, aad an attach- ment was issued for him. He was brought to the office and refused to testify. The decision of the Magistrate to commit him to jail fur contempt, and the request of the parties that he should testify, induced him to give evi- dence. Tae Comixe ixavcoration —The Boston papers say that the Washington Light Infan try of Boston have voted to visit thia city on the 4th of March next, to be present ai the Inauguration of the President They have adopted a new dress cap, of a beautiful pat- term, to be worn on the occasion, end are making other improvements in their full dress uniform From all the indications, the inauguration of Mr. Buchanan will be attended by im- mense numbers of the people of the United itetes. — Conpition or Mr. Scrivener.—Wesare in- furmed that Mr. Scrivener, who was so badly injared on Friday night, is still lying in avery dangerous conditivn at the Washington Infir- mary. His leg is broken in two places below the knee, and though great care has been ta- ken to save the limb, his friends fear its ul mate loss. He is under the care of the skill- ful physicians and atteadants at the Lnfir- mary. Masowic Evection.—We understand that at acouvocation of Wazhington Royal Arch Chapter, No. 16, of this District, heid on Mva- day evening last, under dispensation from Grand High Priest Courtney, of Baltimore, the eiccny Sa were elected for the en- suing year: Herman H. Heath,E High Priest; C Towle, E King; Joho Holroyd, E. Seribe ; Johu Bayne, Treasurer. A Democratic Mgztixg came off yeater- day afternoon near Tennallytown, which was ended by a ee of the voters of Montgo- jery county, Maryland They were ad- dressed by Mr W.D Wallach, Mayor Ma- grader and the Hon. Mr. Hendricks of Indi- ana consecutively, on the issues involved in the current canvars Disorperty Locarity.—Last night, the guards and police of the Seventl Ward ar- rested a number of colored persons who were creating @ disturbance in an alley in that Ward koown as Desmond’s Alley “The Jus tise, in disposing of the cases this moraing, zeeesked that it was a dark spot, and very erly. ey |commumicarap. Mr Eprror :—The following paragraph ap- ed in = late number of your journal : is a beautifal figure of Winthrop’s © to our coustitution, where he says : One of those wondrous rocking stones raised by the Druids which the finger of a eh li might vibrate to the centre, yet tle might of an army could not move from its place, our constitution is so nicely poised that it Seems to sway with the very breath of - sioa, yet so firmly based in the hearts and af- feetions of ole that the wildest storms of treason and fanaticism break over it in vain.”’ Does not this “ beautiful figure’ bear a striking resemblance to that in the subjoined passege which may be found in Scott's “ Ke- nilworth,’’ chapter 24? “The mind of Eugiand’s E\izabeth was like one of those ancient Druidical monuments called rocking stones. The finger of Cupid, boy as he is painted, could put her feelinzs ia moticn, but the power of Hercules Could dot bave destroyed their equilibrium.” FE, Muxopzom Stax B.—-This fine trou = will give catenatum a tegtilelS Fellows?
