‘LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Tus Merrorouitans. —The burg cor- respondent of the Richmond Diapatch, in his letter of the 22d inst , thus chronicles the visit of the Washington Metropolitan Hook and Ladder Company to the former city : * At 11 o’clock all the fire bells in the lower part of the city commenced s simultaneous peal, and many notin the secret thought it betokened a less than the destruction of half the town. il cause for alarm vanished with the announcement that it was only to give notice that Met litan Hook and Lad- der Company, of Washington, were on their way to meet their brethren of Petersburg. The cars arrived at 12, bringing the expected visitors, who were met at the depot by depu- tations of the various companies comp... the Petersburg Fire Department, who h hastily donned their “‘ harness’’ fur that pur- pose. They were welcomed to the hospitali- ties of the town by Wm. H. Lemoine, Esq , President of the Old Street fire company. After this the visitors were conducted through the various streets, till they were halted at the Old Street engine house. The gallant fire boys were preceded by Esputa’s Band, which enlivened the whole way with the melody they knew so well how to produce. Here an hour was consumed in refreshing the inner man, and they were then again called to gether, and marched to the Fairgrounds At this point the visitors were met and welcomed by Capt. Jos. V. Scott, Sosretary of the Suci- ety, and Chief Engineer of the Petersburg Fire Department. “The Chief Marshal of the Fair, Jno. G. Turpin, Eq , then did the honors by escort- ing the visitors and the entertainers through the grounds, showing them every object of in- terest and the elephant generally. At4 o'clock the visitors were conducted to the Bolling brook Hotel, where a most sumptuous banquet had been prepared. Wit and wine flowed, as the presence of genial friends and a lot of Petersburg boys only can make it flow. The entertainment was prolonged till near time for taking the cars for Richmond At a few mo- ments past 6 the toe pai -— = ly bade their good bye as the shrill whis- tie of the Soaasies signalled the parting moment.” The Richmond Dispatch of yesterday says: * On their return from Petersburg, Wedncs day 74-4 the Metropolitans wero met at the depot by Fire Companies 5 and 8, and escort- ed to Lafayette Hail, where a sumptuous bun- quet awaited them. They were here appro- priately received by Commander (ioode, of No , and cordially invited to partake of the feast prepared for them by their brother fire- men. President Martin, of the Washington Company, replied in one of his neat speechos, and then commenced in earnest an attack upen the formidable array of good thin.ss, which rapidly melted away under a vigorvus onset. e customary flow of sentiment f.1- lowed, and the company sepsrated at a sea- sonable hour. Yesterday, most of the visitors passed the time in visiting the various points of inter: st m our city, some seeking that repose which was necessary after a succession of exciting events At night, they were met at their quur ters, the Broad street Hotel. by No. 6 Fire Cowpany, under Commander Rogers, and e: corted to the Ballard House, where, at ¥ lock they partovk of a luxurious supper ‘* Alter spending several hours in social fes- tivity, the visitors were taken in charge by Companies 2, 4 and 7, and conducted to the armory of the Young Guard. Here they re- mained, enjoying the merry dance, until the approach of di at whose sight all the stars hide their diminished heads. The assemblaze brilliant and gay, and we have reason to believe that every one enjoyed the occasion to the utmost. “Previous to going to the Ballard House, the firemen visited the exhibition room of the Mochauies’ Institute, by invitation As they passed down Main street, attended by Espu- ta’s Band. of Washington, and the Armory Band, of Richmond, they made a fine appear- ance A half hour wasspent very pleasantly, examiuing the many beautiful articles of the Lnstitute. “The Metropolitan Company leave for Washington this morning.” The Metropolitan Hook and Ladder Cem- pany arrived about 3) mw. yesterday, on their return from Ricamond They express them selves highly pleased with the trip, and es peciatly with the hospitable reeaption they met among the firemen of the “Old Dominion ” Gopey’s Lapy’s Boox and Graham's Maga- zine for November —Shillington has sent us the above magazices, they ere capital num- bers and contain all the latest styles of winter fashions. * Taz Oup Fire Yer Borsine—Grand Mass Meeting and Barbecue —There was a regu- lar old-fash‘oned Jucksonian meeting ut ‘ Democratic Headquarters” last night, called for the purpose of perfecting the arrange- ments, on the part of the Democracy of the District and vicinity, for attending the grand mass meeting and barbecue to be held at Laurel Paetory, Maryland, on Thursday next, the 30th instant. The finest spirit prevailed, aud the true Democratic fire blazed out as of yore: A special train of cars, to accommo date one thousand persons, has been char- tered fur the vocasion, and will leave the Depot at 54 o'clock on the morning of the 30th. returning about 7 o'clock in the evening Withers celebrated celebrated Brass Band has been engaged, and a renowned “ baby- waker’’ wiil accompany the party, to mingie its thunderiog voice with the exultant shouts of the Democracy! Not man years ago a gentleman who 4 been the edi- tor of a | Review, and who was at one time State’s Attorney of Pennsylvania, was reduced by intemperance to seek an occasional lodging st the station-house, and finally, we believe died at the poor house. On Wednesday night an elderly man walked into the guard-house and took a seat. He waited until the crowd had left, and then ad- dressed Captain Mills : “ Can I rest here to-night ?”’ “« Yes, sir; where is your home?” «T have none.’” “ Where were you born?” “(In Maryland; but I have lived in this city for many years.’’ “What is your age?”’ “ Near sixty; I have been unsuccessful in every attempt to earn an honest livelihood ; have no means for paying for my board, and have been turned into the street.’’ When the applicant answered the question “ What is your name ?”’ no little surprise was created amongst those present, it being recog: nized as that of an old citizen, who had at one time occupied a position of eminence, and who was now reduced to extreme verty Truly one kalf the world knows not how the other half lives! Tae New Yorx Jovrnat for November, has just been sent us from Shillington’s; a very cheap and interesting monthly. Bey it. Quiet Ne1euBorHoops —The returns of the police officers to the chief of police show that there has been less of disorderly conduct in the police districts of this city during the pst three weeks than during the same time in several years. The return of United States cases in particular has been very small, though those warrants are served as readily by the city police as the Corporation warrants. Some of the districts report a single case of this kind, others none at all. The magistrates tell us that the city is unusually quiet, the most of their business consisting of civil cases, Rather a funny foot race was flernoon on Maryland avenue, between First and Second streets, by two in dividuals, neither of whom seemed adapted by ther points for racing purposes; one of them heing a Government pensioner, lame and weighing about 200 pounds, and the other had disqualifications about equal. The bets were against the lame ’un, who, however, aur- prised every body by coming out ahvad, though we did not learn the time made ‘The losers, however, refused to fork over, averring that there had been an understanding be- Naber the runners, by which the lame ’un was win. Humor 1x Raas.—We observed yesterday a little, thin old man, with a rag bag in his hand, picking up a large number of small Lins of whalebone, which lay in the street he deposit was of such a singular nature, that we presumed to ask the quaint looking gatherer how he supposed they came here “Don’t know,” he replied, in a squeaking voice, “but I ’spect some unfortunate female was wrecked hereabout somewhere.” Lost CaitD.—Yesterday. a little boy about three years of age, was taken in cha: by Officer Fanning a4 a lost child. He is a fine looking boy, says his father makes shees, and his name is “ Willie.’’ His parents can find hae by calling at the Second Ward police of- ice For Courr —John Rawlings, a youth, was arrested by Officer Parham yesterday for as- saulting with stones and cowhiding a colored man named George Brown, on the public street He was taken before Justice Donn and held to security for his appearance at the criminal court. We wish them every success. Farr.—The Mission Fair at the Navy Yard closes its successful and brilliant week to-night. ALEXANDRIA CORRESPONDENCE. ALExanpRia, Oot. 24, 1856. The demonstration of the Alexandria De- mocracy, last evening, was a glorious outpour- ing of Virginia's sons to rejoice at a victory won over the foes of the Constitution. We have never seen better spirit; every heart seemed full of gladnes, that ran over in ex- ulting shouts. As a pageant it bas seldom been equalled here; as the work of a few days it has few parallels anywhere. It wasa triumphal procession. Cannon echoed back the A eee. of rejoicing freemen, and music | grected with its sweetest strains the tokens of approbation which fair woman everywhere bestowed upon the display Beside a large number of transparencies, torches, rockets, and other devices for illumination, the line was accompinied by a euperb triumphal cha- riot, hung with lights and appropriately orna- mented, and within thirty-one little misses, beautifally dressed, representing the States of the Union; each miss waved a small fag, inscribed with the names of the Democratic nominees A guard of gentlemen surrounded the chariot he whole procession was wor- thy the brilliant success that called for the celebration The mass meeting took placo at Liberty Hall. which was crowded in every part H C Ward, Esq , vice-president of the Dem- ocratic Association, presided, and the vast au- dience were addressed by Gon Lane, of Or + ; Hon Mr. Hendricks, of Indian i Mr. Morse, of Louisiana; C. BE. Si , of Virginia, and Hon. Mr. Crawford, of Indiana. The last gentleman gained for himself many jaurels by bis effort here, and our Alexandria Demoeracy are loud in praise. *Twas near midnight wheu the demonstra. tion closed, and we ure sure the Demoeracy of Alexandria never felt more cheerful than on that evening.
