LOCAL INTELLIGENCER Ix tam Fo@.—The Koow Nothings of this city who went down to the great joo meet- ing ot Alexandria on Monday — are re- ported to have sung in chorus on way— “* We won’t go home till morning,’’ and they did’nt—in fact a large number of them are not back yet, and we learn that the reatest anxiety pervades numerous distressed indoo households here on account of missing husbands, sons, fathers, brothers, &c. The Hindoo papers are mysteriously bush, and evidently wish to say as little about the ca- lamity as possible; the Organ, in an obscure paragraph, merely stating that the missing ones were detained by the fog. and the fol- lowing item from the Alexandria Gazette of yesterday still leaves them in the fog : r ‘‘Numerous Washingtonians who partici- pated in the celebration, were detained in this place, all Monday night, in consequence of the fog and an accident to one of the hands on board the Alice C Price, which caused her to put back to her wharf after starting for W ash- ington.” e have obtained the following particulars, precured no matter how or at what expense, which we hasten to lay before our readers. It appears that the faculties of our Washing ton Hindoos were somewhat obfuscated by the glare of the torch-lights or something of that sort, and that after the return of the Alice Price to Alexandria, they wandered about in the in a hopeless state of bewil- derment up and down the rather mountainous streets of that ancient town. The Alexun- drians exerted themselves to the utmost to provide their guests with quarters suitable to their worth and social status. The stalls in the market house, the old brewery, and the de- serted fish wharf booths were hospitably ap- propriated for their use, but they ene to be such crooked disciples, that though packed with the utmost economy, the space was found quite inadequate to their needs: con- sequently vast numbers were obliged to camp out, or wander about the town in droves The citisens of Alexandria were also put to their wit’s.ends to provide eatables, and more especially drinkables, for their guests, wo seemed of such inordinate appetites that the Alexandrians conceived that each visitor was afflicted with a tape-worm. Thus it was that the iast cracker in the town hay- ing been devoured, and the last drop of liquor exhausted, the Washington Hindoos com- meneed to clamor for more with a ferocity that threatened the worst consequences Tie Alexandrians ventured to suggest a substitute to alleviate the intolerable thirst of their Washington friends, and the latter with some misgivings deputed of their number to try the experiment of lowing @ mouthfu! of pure water, but his astonished stumach re jected the novel liquid with such vehemency that the experiment was not repeated. The Alexandrians now prepared for the worst, and hastened to barricade their doors and put themselves on the defensive, when luckily a diversion was created in their favor by the foliowing extraordinary occurrence : A citizen was seen walking unsuspectingly down King street, with something projecting from his coat-pocket resembling the neck of a bottle. The yell which burst from the fero- cious Hindeos as they sprang in pursuit, warned the citizen that bis life was in danger, and he fled down the street with the utmost precipitsacy with some thirty thousand Wash- ington Hindoos in full ery efter him, or rather after the bottle, which he had not the pres- enee of mind to drop as he ran. On they went pell-meil in the fog—the citi- zen and the Hindoos—but at the bottom of the street, he taking advantage of his better know- ledge of the localities, cunningly dodged around the corner of a warehouse and secreted himse!f in a sugar hogshead, while his pursu- ers, like the buffaloes we read of, swept on in their mad career over the wharves’ brink and so headlong into the mud and ebb-tide of tie Potomac It being low water, immenze num- bers of them were miserably fastened in the mud—indeed, we learn that the wharves, from the canal terminus to the light-house, are lined with Hindoos sticking forked end up in the mud. into which they are fastened as in- extricably as if planted by a pile-driver. We are informed also that the vicinity of this ap- palling scene has since Monday been coveted with boats filled with afflicted relatives striv- ing to rescue their friends from this disagree- ble position, but that the extent of their suc- cess is to bear away an occasioua! arm or leg, or may be, a No. 10 brogau, a2 a melaucholy relic. The effec: of so many Hindvos in soak Was most disastrous to the finuy tribe, vast numbers of which sickened, turned belly up, and died, aud what with floating fish, and fragments of Hindoos, with hats, caps, boots, ete., the paddle-wheels of the mai! her last trip were clogged so as w hinder her time materially. The result upon such of the Hindoos as were able tocrawl to the shore was not insalubrious. One, who probably had not washed himself for many years, was so much disguised by his salutary riasing that on his retarn to his fam- ily he was not recognized even by the wife of his bosom, and came near being ejected as an impostor from his own house. Another sin- gular instance has come to our knowledge of a Hindoo who lay half immersed in water from Monday night till to day in « State of Rip Van Winkieism, and who has absolutely be- come web footed and fingered, and very per- ceptible scales have formed upon his lower limbs. Whether he was developing into fish, fowl, or mermaid, is uncertain {t would seem from this interesting fact that Hiudoos are im « transition, grub, or tadpole state, and may pvssibly yet develup into something use- ful or ornamental. {t is impossible thus far to get a correct list of the missing and wounded in this disaster Qaite 2 namber, inclading several members of our City Council, were last seen upun a raft, god it is feared way have drifted out to sea ‘Tbe wud scow Juliana Jubnsun was promptly despatched ia pursuit, and, it is hoped, may bring back some intelligence uf the lost ones Many undertook to foot it up from Alexandria by the turnpike and are suppused to have gut scattered in the fog Ons of these, a worthy young carpenter of this city, was found yes terday in the upper end of Loudoun county, whither 8® had wandered iu the fog. He had eubsisted during that time upon a single bis- cuit and a copy of the Star, which fortunate- ly he bad with him 2 p.m —The * Jalianna Johnson’’ has re- turmed with tbe missing Hindvoos upon the raft When discovered they were in the last stages of famine, and were on the point of sa erincing one of their number to s: the lives of the others. A plump member of our City Councils, whose well developed aldermanic figure promised good eating, was the seleate:! victim, and though his compatriots of the Board, regardless of their hanger, took a no ble stand against the consummation, yet the majority, with wateriag mouths and a canni- ba.io leer truly frightful, were slowly up- woachiug thei: prey, when the “ Julianys , ee hove in sight. On this prospect of relief the foremost aod hungriest of the can- nibais burst into tears and rushed into the arms of the doomed Alderman, who in his turn fainted away. On being restored, bis wild joy at finding himself still uncaten, with not even a steak ors roasting-piece missing from bis fair proportions, can, in the language of an author whose name does not now occur to us, ‘‘ better be imagined than described ”’ ‘Xhese are the facts, as far as ascertained. Srzavine Lumsex —Lately the fuel thieves seem to have altered their plans. They used to carry off wood at night from the wood yards in carts and hand-barrows. Some of the thieves were caught, aud in one instance anished, without bevelit of a trial by jury. Since then they have taken to new buil where lumber is lying about, and help them- selves to whatever cau Lo easily carried off Some more bold than others operate in the day time, and get away without being sus pected of an intention tu steal. A few arrests and punishment of offenders would probably prevent considerable loss to builders there- after. Approraiatine Boxes — Last night, a nun- ber of boys were running through the streets with an old wagon which they were loadin ‘with boxes and barrels for the gine making a bonfire. The approach of these youngsters was a signal for uncommon activity among the merchants upon the Avenue who were anxious to secure a ‘portion of their property, which they consider of some value to then at this season. are greaton displays. That of last night aes im ‘and satisfacto with an exception. finest of torch-light proces- sions has a degree of incompleteness while lacking the essential of torches. Yet the pro- cession was distinctly visible to the naked eye at many yards distance, and was accompanied withal by a certain Juminous haze, or nebula of devious outline, which, when observed through a good telescope, resolved itself into distinct objects of the nature of ponies! trans- jembaores At the present high price of tal- low and low ebb of Hindooism, tow-wicked candles—ninety to the pound—are doubtless advisable economy; but we recommend the Know Nothings to select a moonlight night for their next pa; it, that the spectators may discern the “illumination” without dam- age tothe eyesight We would resommend, too, the selection of a longer-legged = to carry the transparency lettered ‘We keep step to the music of the Union.”’ Tho fat lit- tle fellow employed last night did his best, but could not straddle quite wide enough. We suppose the representation of the ‘“ God- dess of Liberty’? bya big-headed K.N_ in Peusesets. was designed to illustrate that iberty &s understood by the Know Nothings. Why, though, are the K. N’s inev itably obliged to rely upon a band composed of for- eiguere—have they “no music in their souls?” Another Know Nothing motto claimed atten- tion: ‘We root.’? No doubt of it, but why proclaim your propensities ? Aq@gicuLturE and Horticuttcrs.—Thlis being the time for preparing for fall planting, we call the attention of those who peepee to set dut or renew orchards to Mr. Joshua Pearoe’s nursery of fruit trees. Our some- what extensive experience in such matters in- duces us to recommend trees grown in this immediate vicinity above all others for setting out orchards in this neighborhood. We know, too, that Mr. Pearce is as reliable in all re- apects as nny other nurseryman in the United States. His stock is the result of more than twenty years’ experience and improvement in our midst. John Saul, too, has on hand perhaps the finest collection of bulbous roots of every de scription ever for sale in Washington. Horti eulturists among us should, by all means, in- spect them, even if not dis d to purchase ‘There is no other real comfort and luxury 80 cheap as those derived from flowers produced from bulbous roots, so fragrant and ornamen- tal. Merropouitan Hoox anv Lapper Compa- sy —The Richmond Dispatch of yesterday says: “At 11 o'clock, yesterday morning, the Metropolitan Hook and Ladder Company, of Washington took their departure for Peters- burg by a special train. The proceedings there are described by our correspondent. They re turned to Richmond last night, were received by Fire Companies 5 and 8, escorted to Ln- fayette Hall, and sum tuously éntertained To-day, Companies 4 and 7 will give the guests a dinner, after which No. 6 will take them in charge and continue the hospitalities. The Metropolitans contemplate leaving fur Wash- ington to-morrow morning.” Taz Weatuer.—Range of the thermometer from Friday noon, October 17, to this morning : Morning. Noon. Night. It appeared from the evidence that he borrowed fifty cents from a woman, re- questing her not to let his wife know, and i i ly. The woman d for her half dollar uatil she got tired, and she reminded him of his promise. He, instead of paying her, followed her, cursin and abusing her; for this he was arrested an taken before Justice Morsell, who ordered him to pay the fine and costs imposed for such offences, in addition to the fifty cents which he had borrowed. Supare Hars—Sreinwetz’s.—Gentiemen who are just now in quest of s»mething tasty in the shape of of a fall or winter hut, are very apt to walk into Stienmetz’s, No. 236 Pennzylvania avenue, and when in, to find just such an article as they desire. He has some $3 and $3 50 hats really very good and certainly very cheap His stock of furs is rich and extensive; and the ladies, we are certain, will find them well worth examioa- tion. Pickpockets Azout.—We learn that four ladies were relieved of their portmonnaies and valuables in the last night's train from Balti- more, somewhere between the Relay House and this city. The pickpockets no doubt are @ part of the gang which is just now infesting Baltimore during the Fair. Assuming, on the contrary, an inflation in is from an increase of paper issues, gold will be drained from thence to this and other countries, and a great buoyancy of trade, coupled with an increasing abundance of woxcy must be anticipated here.” The same psper on Thursday says: “The next monthly statement of the Bank of France will be looked for with greater anxiety than ever before.
