VVENING STAR |Janramecminins De SS LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Darection AND ARREST oF CHARPENTIER, tas Frexce Foaitive, sy a Crtisex oF Waszincton —Our readers will have read the details of the late enormous frauds upon the Northern Railroad Company of France, by the cashier, Charles , and the brothers Grelet, of their flight to the United States, of the arrest of the Grelets and the escape of the more adroit Charpentier, and of his flight, no one knew whither. So success- fal was be in throwing his pursuers off the scent, that while he, in disguise, was making his way towards western New York, one of the keenest United States’ Deputy Marshals of New York city, took the steamer for Now (;- leans in pursuit The Rothschilds, who were enormous !o-ers by these frauds, instituted the most widely extended efforts to secure the arrest of Char- pentier. Mr. Christmas, the agent of A Bel- mont, caused a minute description of his per- son to be widely circulated, together with the offer of $1,000 for his capture. No results fol- lowed, though the New York police were nat- urally spurred up to the highest exercise of their alertness by the promieed reward, until late on Thursday night, or, rather, about threo o’clock on Friday morning, when, in bss dramatic language of the New York Tri- une.— “Capt. Dowling of the Sixth Ward police was kened by a tall, mysterious lookin, fellow coming into his sleeping apartment an shaking him roughly by the shoulder. Start- ing up, he saw a man by his bedside, wrapped in a thick cloak, which was so muffled u; to coneeal the lower half of his faco, while a slouched hat concealed the upper part, leaving only his eyes and the tip of his nose visible. “Who are you,”’ asked the captain. “* An officer,’’ was the laconic reply. e — is the =e . Ss ® prisoner for you. ‘Who is he?” z ‘ Charpentier, the French railroad robber.”” il as Show me your authority for arresting im. He drew out from under his cloak, a war- rant issued by Justice Osborne, and without disclosing any of bis features, quietly handed it to Dowling. The Captain who had nut yet dressed himself, began to feel chilly, and the imperturbable coolness of the stranger rather annoyed him; but there was no gain- saying the authority upon which the arrest had been made Perhaps he also felt a little vexed, as it was obvious that the man was a New York Detective, that the reward should have been earned by an outsider. At any rate he shortly asked him : ‘Who are you, anyway? Where do you hail from? If you are an officer, where do you belong?” Without deranging a fold in bis dress, the etranger coolly replied: “I bave brought you a prisoner, there is my authority. By what right do you thus ques- tion me?” This “‘ mysterious stranger”’ of the Tribune is a gentleman of this city, Mr S. M. Knight, who, we learn, being in New York city at the time of the excitement about the French fugi tives, by the merest accident cams upon a trail which he suspected to be that of Char- pentier, and which, after putting himself in communication with Belmont & Co., he fol lowed night and day, finally succeeding in making the important arrest. Charpentier was detected by Mr Knight on the farm ofa Mr Gatfield, about three miles from Newburgh, where he was disguised as @ common farm laborer, with his mustache shaved off and his haircut short. On making the discovery, Mr. Knight took with him officers Scott and Clark of Newburgh, and at night made «descent upon the farm-house, placing an officer in front and rear of the house to watch the building, and entering him- telf to oars =n a Ho Charpentier he fo in and asleep, and on being aroused he first stared alae? him like one half awake, and then gave a single unearthly yell as he perceived his sit- uation. Oa Mr Kuight sternly asking bie name be replied that it was “ Delauney,” but on being told by Mr. Knight that it was Charles + he made no answer, and exhibited no further emotion, and af- terwards, while waiting at Newburgh for the New York train, partook of refreshments pro- vided for him by Mr Kaight with true French ay Mr. Knight alone took his prisoner to New York and through the city. designing to place him in the Toombs, but it being so late in the night they were closed, and he was compelled to lodge him injthe Sixth Ward station. He then walked three miles to B:ooklyn to the residence of one of the Belmont firm, and gave the information of the arrest, and also other information which led to the discovery in the morning of some $21,000 worth of the fraudulently obtained property, which was found concealed in a cellar me a heap of coal. According t> acontract between Mr. Knight and the parties interested in the arrest, he re- ceives $1,000 for the arrest of Charpentier, and five per cent. upon the property discov- ‘ing thus far $2,100 due him. He is also to receive five per cent. on any additional property regained through the arrest of Char- tier The whole amount embezsied was about a million and quarter dollars. The achieye- ment of Mr. haight exhibits throughout re- markable skill and nerve. Youne Mex’s Caristian Association.—A regalar meeting was held last evening, Mr. Wight in the Chair An essay on the * True Mission of Christian Young Men” was read by Prof. J. N. Carpenter. He reviewed the whole ground oecupied by this generation, and showed the dutics of young men especially in the present alarming crisis in our history. All who were followers nie Ss of Peace should atrive to te g will am mea and make sale nf til Pat's nivios to Timothy, to ‘apply himself to reading,’”’ was spoken of, and mach was said of the proper books to be read. He advocated the readin of infidel works by those who were aed to meet their arguments and expose their sopbistries The essay was practical and pointed, and was listened to with much atten- tion. Discussions ensued on the subject of read- ing the works just mentioned, and strong ground was taken against it Tt was oonsid- ered dangerous and pernicious, for few minds were able to answer and refute the errors they contained, and too often doubt and skepticism was the result. A resolution was adopted, that after the reading of each essay an opportunity would ose en for discussion esolution was adopted, recommending to the young men of the city the course of free lectures, given every Monday evening, at Mr. Richard's academy, corner of Fourteenth street and New York avenue. ‘The committee on the gymnasium presented & report, which was unanimously ado; ; and Messrs Rhees, Easter, Young Baldwin, and Holmead were appointed to carry out the recommendation of the committee. The distance was sixt: yards ; the beet two of three shots gained the prize, which was awarded to Sergeant Judson War- ner. After the target firing, the corps spent the evening in company drill, to the gratifica- tion of numerous spectators on the ground. i their return, they were invited to par- take of the hospitalities of Lieutenant Flint, of the Mounted Guard, at his house, and after — they returned to their armory and wers Recovery or Sto.en Goons —A warrant was issued on the 15th inst , by Justice Row- land to Police Officer Lloyd, directing him to search the residence of a euret woman named Mary Frances Wheeler, where it was sup) that certain valuable jewelry and clothing stolen from the residence of Mr R.
