For instance, we pre- sume it would hard to find anything Congressional experience or rival the extraordinary tumult*resorted to in the British House of Commons to put down an ob- noxious debater But hear our visitor : “If a debate springs up, it seems to bea game of cross questions crooked answers A member is making a b, when a ques- tion is put to him ‘is answer suggests other questions, and while commenting on the re- Plies, the questioner in turn is questioned by some one else and so on. When a member appears to be attering the last sentence of his s bh, half a dozen or more members are on legs calling out, ‘Mr. Clerk!’ Mr. Clerk!’ amid shouts from all parts of the hall, «Call the roll! call the roll!’ You will often have to small difficulty to hear what is said, or understand what is a from the in- cessant noise and bustle. re is a constant sharp striking of letters and papers on the desk—a mode the members have of summon- ing the to take their documents to the post-box. You are amazed too at the pictur- esque attitudes of sume of the members. You are quite right in remarking that this isa Democratic assembly. Is not that an elegant posture now of the honorable gentleman in the outer range of seats? He has flung one leg over the desk in front, the heel of his boot dip ~- the ink bottle, and while his chair is tilted back, and his other leg flung over one arm of it, he chews his quid, picks his teeth, and squirts his tobacco juice at his neighbor’s spittoon, which he misses. This is the Yankee way of ‘taking it easy.’ “The Americans seem to have an uncon- querable Lypsoryrees 2 to kick up their heels— not behind, but before. I have gone intu ths Reading Room of the Young Men’s Christian Association on the Avenue and found, of four men reading, three with their feet on the table, and the fourth é24ixg his in the oven of the stove. On more than one occasion, while sit- ting in the galleries at Congress, I have 1¢- ecived a poke at the back of my head, and turning round bave discovered in close prox- imity, not anybody's elbow or hat, but, a pair of boots with feet in them resting on the back ot my seat, on an elevation with the chair of the owner. But a more disagreeable thing than that is the chewing and spitting. Ln Congress the carpets in the galleries are sata- rated, und the staircase walls filthily discolored with tobacco juice. In the streets, when the snow wag on tse ground, it locked as if people had been walking all over the city with leaky cans of molasses.”’ Of course, our Cockney tourist was bound to have a fling at us as a nation of tobacco ehewers. We are no defenders of the filthy habit of tobacco chewing and spitting; but if there be any thing more disgusting about the manner of using the weed than the universal English (lower class) style of smoking it in dirty black pipes, wehave no disposition to behold it hat sort of additional unpleas- antness they would contrive to make to its use were not tobacco, as it were, prohibited by the enormous tax upon it, we can exercise the Yankee privilege of guessing Our traveler shows further evidences of bis acateness as an observer, by describing Mr Speaker Banks as 2 “tall” man, and Horace (Greeley as a “‘ mild, amiable looking ofd gen- tleman.”” Our Cockney visitor is evidently not a Mor- peth, or a Lye!!, or a Johnston, a Thackeray, or a Delaine; but he wil! do to travel among the Jialls, Trollopes, Marryate, and Dickensee. Narionat Tugatre.—lIt is to be regretted that the Keene company had not opened their campaign with euch .terling plays as “She Stoops to Conquer’ an? “ The Love Chase,”’ rather than pieces of ile ‘‘ Camille’’ sshool. Our public get no adequate idea of the dra- matic talent of Miss Keene, or the capabilities of her company, until the performance of the “Love Chase’ on Saturday night, and the last of their engagement. While the play was well sustained by the company throughout, we have farther to say that Miss Keene is, by all odds, the best ** Constance’’ we have ever seen on the stage Upon the tain at the end of the piece, called out by acclamation, and her annouuce- ment that herself and company might appear again at no distant period at the Nationa! was received with the heartiest demonstrations of satisfaction by the audience. The ill-mannered conduct of = portion of the audience on Saturday night, who by the reprehensible practice of rising to go out prior to the conclusion of the farce prevents those who are disposei, from hearing cr seeing. was deservedly rebuked by one of the actors, who declined going on with his part uatil some- thing like order was restored. A Boous Caprats —A young genius who loves liquor, and is not over scrupulous as tu the manner of getting it, has been playing rather bold game lately, by passing himself off as Captain of the Auxiliary Guard at vari- ous taverns in the city, accepting invitations to drink, and promising the protection of the watchmen to al! who treated him. Unluckily, in bis pregrees he chanced to meet the real Captain, who, being a teetotaler, was not over-much pleased at the reputation the pre- tender was gaining fur him; however, be fur gave the offender for this time on his promise never again to attempt to shine in borrowed plumes. Last week, some young scamps, represent ing themselves as belonging to the Auxiliary Guard, arrested a number of nymphs of the pave and extorted money from them, under threat of taking them to the guard-house if these young gentlemen are caught, they will! prebably find this mode of raising money under false pretenses a rather grave offence, aud the penalty sever Tae Gvarps —The National Gaards of this city reached Baltimore on Saturday morniog at 10 o'clock, and were received at the Cam- dea Station by 2 deputation of the field aud staff officers of the 541 regiment. In charge of Captain Georgs W. Disrorwixe KeLicious Meetines —Yester day, a drunken fellow went to the Asbury eburch and tried to guin admittance by curs- ing the persons iu charge of the doors, and using profane and indecent language. Some citizens endeavored to persuade him away, but he turned upon them and threatened to beat them Watehmano Norwood was sent for, and he arrested him and put him inthe guard house where he remained until this morning, when « fine of five dollars and costs was ad- judged him Seaiovs Cuanér —Saturday night, a war- rant was issued by Justice T. C. Donn, against John Newman, who w+: charged with having committed an assault »°4 battery on a map named Rady, by which Kady is likely to lrse an eye. The warrant was given to officer Watson, who arrested Newman near the Ana- costia bridge and lodged him in the guard house He was released om security for @ further hearing. Riotous GaTueRines.—Saturday night, the Auxiliary Guards were kept busy by the crowds of persons who were gathered at various places, and behaving very ay hi sar Seve ral fights were prevented by the interference of the guards and police. He was arrested by Officer Watson and placed in the guard house, where he remained until this morning, care being taken that he should not injure himself ntime.
