r at e Se LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. National Taxatre®.—Goldsmith's comedy «She Stoops to C ir’? was most cherm- ingly performed last night, by the Keene troupe, and its rendition gave high delight to an audience, many of which doubtless wit- nessed for the first time this fine play The forte of the Keene troupe is undoubtedly ele- gentoomedy. Were we to a fault in the performance of last night, it would be that the part of “‘ Young Marlow” was slightly overdone by Mir. sore Jordan; in other words, that the bashful lover was almost too bashful and awkward in the —_—— of his mistress. However, by his ards capi- tally enacted impudence in the scene with t' supposed bar maid, he amply demonstrated his ability to merctied indent ln —- uence of the ition of Mr. B. Johnston, the farce of ‘‘ Who Speaks First’? was substituted for ‘‘ The School for Tigers,’”’ in whieh Mr. Johnston was to have a) je " ‘o-night, on the — = benefit and last appearance of Miss ra Keene, a very pices in bill is offered in the play of * Still Waters Run Deep” and the brilliant farce “A Morning Call. “Zoupgr!”—A man lately went to the none and putting his mouth up to the delivery box cried out,‘ Louder!’ Theclerk supposing the man to be deaf, und that he was making & uest of him to speak louder so that he ccd haa, asked him in a very loud tone the name of the person for whom he wanted the letter “ Louder !”’ cried the man. “ What name ?”’ yelled the clerk. *« Louder !”’ again bawled the man who now the clerk to be deaf. clerk took a long a, age, pen his might again bawled out man’s face the same question, “‘ What name?’ This was done in sv & tone that the echo seemed to return from the far off hills. The man started ho: apie alarm, shouting to the wv of his $ « baci acre Louder - ie told you Louder! my name is nothing else!’’ “Oh, ah! ob, ho!” said the clerk, “ your name is Louder,eh! Didn't think of that; here’s your letter; Mr Louder, here’s your letter.” Tas WeatTner.—Range of the thermometer from Friday noon, bop 10, — ae : jorning. joon. it. 60° 58° 63 58 66 62 64 66 4t 45 44 42 50 50 ight of the thermometer in the mornings from 11th to 17th Uctober, inclusive, 43° 04". Tne TaeaTRe TO-NIGHT.—A correspondent writes us suggesting that the management of the management of the theatre would do well to put the temperature of the building ata little higher point. We ere sure these gen- tlemen have every disposition to cater accep- tably to the Washington public, and they will no doubt give the hint due consideration. We agree entirely with our correspondent that “the two pieces selected for to-night it to fill the house. Both are excellent exceedingly well cast, and I doubt whe- ther there are other two in America who can excel Messrs. Wh b and Jordan in their famous characters of Mildmay and Hawksley in * Still Waters Run ee I would, on no account, forego the pleasure of seeing it again to-night, aad weak advise all who have a taste for good acting (not bluster) to go and see how Mr. Wheatleigh recovers the letters. © The Morning Call’ is a brilliant that all must admire.’’ A Miscutzvovs Feitow,—Some of our play- going population seem to entertain very cu- rious notions of what constitutes fun and pro- priety. Not many nights azo, a person threw a cabbage upon the — during the perform- ance, and last night a fellow, either crazy or drunk, we should think, threw alive cat upon the stage during the representation of ‘She Stoop3 to Conquer.’’ © was promptly ar- rested and taken to the guard-house, whore he was fined five dollars and costs Much in- dignation was expressed by the audience as we'l as mortification that such an occurrence ehould have happened in a Washington theatre. Daxexrovus AssavLt.—Last night, an old colored man, well aes te ge = as Davy Coates, was attac! in his owa house by ae colored boy named Frank Wii- liams. who struck him on the face with a rock, laying open his cheek to the bone. The old man was taken charge of by Watchman Norwood, who had his wounds dressed. Wil liams was arrested this morning by Officer Norwood, and sent to jail for court by Justice Birch Maiciovs Miscater.—Some tipsy young- sters went to Mary Blackstone’s house, in the Seventh Ward, last night, and after beating a colored girl, commenced breaking things, and made @ geacral average of the furniture, including many articles of value. Warrants have been issued for the scamps, and the offi- cere ate after them with particularly sharp sticks. Parrr Larceny —Yosterday, a young man named Michael Rorick, was arrested by Of cer Ross fur stealing @ pair of socks, and held te security for court by Justice Donn Ths socks belonged to Alexander Aldridge, and were taken from a bundle on an omnibus of which Rorick was the driver, and were found under the cushion of the driver’s seat. Jus? Arnivep.—A few of the light fingered gentry made their appearance ia our city last evening They probably expected to meet with opportunities for successtal operations ; but as we have heard of no losses we me they were ppointed. Grozgrtown, Oct 17, 1856 The number of large class vessels (we mean vessels cf from 200 to 350 tons) now trading out of our port is much larger than bas been for many years, and we are pleased to learn that the number is still increasing. And we hav'nt a doubt, as we have heretofore re- marked, but this number would very soon be doubled, if not trevbled, if a few thousand dollars were expended in deeping a small por tion of our channel, so as to make our wharves easy of access to vessels drawing from twelve to sixteen feet water Rain commenced failing at an early hour last night, and has continued to du so up to the present time, consequently there is no cut- loor business of any moment doing We learn from Capt Kitter, who came down on the ket boat Argo laet night, that there is quite a deet of boats now on their way dow und will doubtless reach our city some time during today We co de from this that the water upon the upper levels is still improving . The returns of this morning from the recent elections have tended great!y to quiet the ex citement which has pervaded our city for sev- eral days. We learn that Col.
