a LOCAL INTELLIGENGE. Suspzotep or Homrcipg.—Last Saturday evening considerable excitement was caused in the neighborhood of G and H streets on Sixth, by the sudden death of Mra. MoNaugh- ton, wife ef George McNaughton, long resident of this city. The circumstances excited sus- picion that he had caused the death of his wif and he was arrested and taken to the gua! house by officer B T. Watson. He remained at the station until a late hour, when notice was sent to Cay Mills that the jury would not return a verdict until after the mor- tem examination, which was fixed for two p. m. yesterday. Justice Donn immediately com- witted McNaughton for a further hearing — The following evidence waselicited before the jary at the first hearing: Mrs. Hendley testified that about 3 p. m., on Saturday, she went to McNaughton’s house; found Mrs. McNaughton lying on a lounge in the room adjoining the shop apparently asleep; McNaughton was in another room adjoining the shop, cursing and swearing; witness went into the store, and while there, thought she heard a heavy fall on the floor in the room where deceased was lying; went back and found deceased lying on the floor; McNaugh- ton said, ‘Goin and pick that woman up— see how she is strangling and throwing up;” witness looked, and replied she could see no- thing of the kind; MoNaughtoa then ordered her to leave the house; she left, not knowing that Mrs McNaughton was dead. James MoVarty said he bad seen deceased that morning about 8 o’clock, in her usual health; saw her ogain alittle before 3 p. m ; about 4 p. m , McNaughton wasgetting ready to go to the office, (Treasury extension,) and told witness to see to taking that woman* (meaning his wife) up stairs to bed before he left; she was laying on the floor; McNaughton said to witness “ ain’t that a pretty spectacle, a woman lying on the floor in that condition;’’ McNaughton advanced to where she laid and took hold of her, and exclaimed, ‘By Jesus,”” or on Jesus, she is dead;’’ witness then said, aughton you have finished her at last.’” Yesterday after the physicians, Dre. Eliot, Marbury, and Bradley reported the result of their examination, the jury had aconsultation and finally returned the following verdict : “ Death was caused by pressure of the brain, which had become very much congested and extravasated, the blood having eseaped in large quantities from the vessels of the braia and become coagulated, and this might have resulted from a slight ur severe injury, and even without any external or perceptible vio- lence.” The hearing before the magistrate was ruled for 9 o’clock this morning, but postponed une til p. m., at the request of a daughter of the deceased. Bors, Reap Tais !—You, we mean, whowere implicated in the disgraceful scenes depicted below, and by a Jady eye-witness. Do you not blush for shame? Mr. Editor: Lf you think the following lines are worthy, I shal! be glad to see them inserted in your columns. : Last night, when ail human sounds seemed hushed in sleep, and the lovely moon was keeping her gentle watch over man, [ was in thought commauning ,with my God—grateful for the innumerable blessings of my life, and imploring his mercy and protection for the future. I had scarcely committed my%elf and dear ones into his keeping for the night, when my calm and devotional feelings were dis- turbed by loud cries of anger and reports of pistols. { rushed to the window, and saw in the pale moonlight crowds of men and boys evidently engaged in fighting. I listened, and heard the most awful oaths and threats rond- ing the air; at first | was shocked and dis- gusted, then, as I thought of the riots in Bal- timore I had been reading of, became alarmed, and wished [ had a revolver to pro- tect myself and our household. But alas, weak woman, such should not be your weapon —weak did I call you? Would your power were not so great! see its evidences be- fore me! Are you not to blame for this dreadful scene? Did not God place in your bands the fearful responsibility of forming the eharacter of men? Are you not endowed with sufficient influence to mould the child into anything? When [ looked at this crowd and thought, O had each mother led her dar- ling son to the altar—had she impressed upon him the example of our just and peace-loving Saviour—nad she opened his eyes to see the countless mercies of his ! patbrsemee and taught him to love their author—had she stamped upon his heart and mind his duty towards his God, and his duty towards bis neighbor, this seene would never have presented itself—O woman! will you ever know the extent of your power? Must it ever be that the depravity of man increases in consequence of your neglect ? When you reflect that if our glorious Union should ever be dissolved it will be your own work,do you not trembls and shudder and think you had better never been born than to have lived for such a purpose Let a sister entreat you, as you love your God and your country, to reflect upon the weight of woman- ly responsibilities you have to sustain. O may each mother, by devout prayer to the Al- mighty, obtain wisdom and strength so to bend every twig in her nursery that the tree may inclined to obey the will of (tod, and pre- serve peace and happiness to our Nation fo:- ever. Caarity. Wasaineton, Oct. 12, 1856. Dawe Sport.—We have been amused at the description given to us by an old guoner of the strait in which he lately found a couple of our amateur sportsmen in the vicinity of Ben- ning’s bridge. It is well known that the orto- Jan shooter provides himself with a skiff of light draft in which to traverse the deep marebes, and while he takes his position for- ward, gan in band, a man is stationed at the other end to propel the boat As these skiffs are necessarily somewhat of the eggshell or- der, the chances are that the parties, if not -careful and experienced, will meet with an oc- casional capsize. Our friend says he was making his way cau- tiously through th: rsh when he encountered a water-logged skiff moving slowly along, and ateach end of which a mans head was visi- ble above the water. One of the heads opened bis mouth and pathetically inquired the near- est way to the shore he ‘‘ cussed skiff,’’ he said, had a koack of kicking up and tilting them in the water at every attempt to shoot. He added emphativally, and sumewhat pro- fanely, that if this was the sport cracked up in orwwlan shooting, he wanted no more of it. Oar friend, the gunner, is confident he has seen these same amateurs behiad the counter of one of our fashionable dry goods’ atores, but he is probably much mistaken ia that. Mixors Kunxixe with Fire Apparatus — Last night a hose reel was brought from the Seventh Ward into the Fourth Ward by a number of young men, fur what purpose was Mot apparent, as there was po alarm of fire in that section of thecity. The auxiliary guards hearing the noise went to see what the matter was, and finding several minors dragging the reel they arrested them and put them in the guard house. Justice Birch, at the request of Captain Mills, who did not wish to retain them, called the young men up for trial. Tbe alarm was false; the young men were pulliog the reel; they were under twenty-one years of age and liable, each to ten dollars fine apd the costs; but as this was the first time they were caught the Justice administered a repri- mend, aud advised them to break up their or- —— as property owners in the Seventh Yard were opposed to it, warned them tha: if taken in they would be made to pay the fall penalty, and then dismissed them. Suxvay Gausugrs —A lot of colored eport- ing men were seen gu:nbling yesterday on Eleventh street. Tue police officers advanced upon them, but the gamblers getting the alarm escaped. The only person captured wag Wash Hawkins, who was @ looker-on. Wash was advised to keep out of such company and permitted to the cards and a few pen- nies fell into the hands of the officer. Maviciovs Miscuter.—Early last night a number of young men employed on vessels near the Long Bridge, went aboard the old schoouer Armstrong, lying at Lenvox's wharf, and eutdown the masts and destroyed the rigging. Twoof them wore urrested and taken to the guardhouse This morniug they had a hearing before Justice Birch, who ordered each to pay 4 foe aud costs an arrest of a person who was sup; Saturday afternoon by Wate! on the Seg i of stealin propery of Justice Donn. This evening will be their last appearance in Washington. Free Rior.—Saturday night an alarm of fire was raised, and the fire companies wero called out. A riot ensued, and a hose reel was taken from a new company called the “ Independent,’’ from the Seventh Ward, and @ portion of it broken. It was retaken by po- lice offteer Williamson, and restored to the owners. A number of pistols were fired, and fog awhile the affair was of rather serious ap- pearance, but the companies returned to their quarters, and no arrests were made It is to be hoped that the firemen will see the neces- sity of ridding themselves of all hangers-on wko follow in their wake only to create riot. A Mistaxe.—Officer Keese yesterday made posed to be concerned in a recent robbery by which Mr. J.B, Van Ness, from Richmond, Virginia, lost a large amount of money, but on exami- nation it was shown that he had taken the wrong mau. The mistake grew out of an er- ror of the Richmond officer in sending the description of the person suspected. Two had been concerned—one was captured in Rich- mond, the other escaped. The description of ‘the captured person was sent here which caused the arrest. The accused was, of eourse, released. A Buxpig or Assavui? Cases.—A number of arrests have been made of persens charged with being concerned in assaul's and batte- ries at Broadrup’s mills, on Rock oreek, in this county, and they were to have been tried to-day, but on account of the absence of a ma- terial witness the cases were postponed until next Monday son served nine warrants on the parties.
