er. eer eS a EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Ovur-Door AmuseweNts.—Although the ar- ticle on this subject, which recently appeared in the New York Times, was designed for that locality, it contains much wholesome advice licable to this vicinity, where our fellow- aa are as indifferent to manly exercises as the sons of Gotham. The cy crag, numerous boat clubs sported on the Potomac, and when cricket matches were of occasional occurrence ; but the ten-pin alley new affords the more ular means of exervising the body, rl 8 with a generally healthful re- sul are not pre to say. Shs Siererscescke: (Thee no natural reason on earth why Americans should not be as muscular as Englishmen. Anatomists have proved to us that the skeleton is full as large, and all we want is that vigorous attention to health which it at present seems our pride to neglect. We have a good many gymnasiums in this country, but the majority of the pa- trons are Germans and Englishmen. And we have no society equivalent to that excellent institution the ee Austrian governments view with ruch alarm. ‘‘We have bad our attention directed to this subject by the late cricket match at Ho- beken, between the eleven of the United States, and the eleven of Canada. On inquiry we find that in the so-called eleven of the United States there was not a single American © This tells the whole story. We have no taste, or at have exhibited no taste, for those athletic exercises which make life fruit- ful and enjoyable. We fight well, but our _ even in physical contest is more intel- jectual than the result of physical strength Could we combine the two how much might we not be able to compass. “The life of a young man in New York differs as 4 from the life of a youth simi- larly situa’ in Landon. The cockney—if you will call bim so—belongs to a cricket clab, has a wherry on the Thames, or a share in @ small yacht, and after hours of business bats or bowls, or pulls at oars or ropes as if his life depended on it. The young men of England do not seem to know what to do with their superfluity of animal life. Gloves and foi pe single-sticks compose the furniture of their rooms, and, although they dissipate perhaps as much as we, they know how to work the poison off. One sees them walking along the streets big chested, fresh colored, with that loose move of the limbs and erect carriage, which, to all eyes, is pleasant to look on. “New York youth knows not these enjoy- ments. Down town early and close at figures or sales. Delmonico’s at noon with brandy cocktails, work again until 4 or 5, and then to dinner. And after dinner what? billiard saloons, where the gree unwholesome picture of the open a ged Seandy Swallowed by the pint, whio tramps riots upon a stomach too feeble to resist—until late at night, with flushed cheeks and wandering eyes, the worn-out youth ram- bles—let us _— to his home. “* We have the Anglo-Saxon frame perpet- uated inus. There is nothing to p going ahead of our ancestors in this other things, save our enervating habits. boast that we have biggertrees, bigger rivers, and a bigger country than the English. Let us add to the list a bigger body muscle.” A Wasuixcton Victim —Among the victims atthe Baltimore riots, yesterday, was a citi- sen of Washington, a young man named Na- than H. Throop, son of J. V.N Throop. the engraver. He fell at the corner of St. Paul and Monument streets, and was carried to the house of Police Officer Morgan, 185 Ross street, where a medical examination bein; made, a ball was discovered to have caked his left temple and passed through the brain to the opposite side. Another ball lodged in the right shoulder, and the arm was severely cut, as if by a knife. The Baltimore Sun of to-day speaks of him as of having been last night pronounced in a hopeless condition, with the brains oozing from the wound in his head; but on inquiry at the house 6f his parents we learn that he is alive to-day, and able to con- verse. Board or ALDERMEX—Adjourned Meeting. The Board met, and was called to order by the President, at 7 o’clock last evening, and resumed the consideration of the bill entitled “* An act preseri! the daties and salaries of the Surveyor and Assistant Surveyor, and for other purposes,” which occupied the attention of the Board thé entire evening, and was assed with several amendments ; when the pa adjourned. The salary of the Surveyor is fixed at $1,500 per annum, and the Assistant at $900. An additional amount of labor is required, both in the office and out-doors. It aiso fixes the fees for out-door services, and requires a heavier bond than under the old law. Distursance.—-Last night, a boy was arrested for stealing a handkerchief in the crowd near the telegraph office. Some per- sons present expressed their sympat! for the prisoner by riotous demonstrations, and on the way to the guard house, two persons, who were very officious, were arres! for in- citing to riot. They were put in the cells and retained until OC. in Mills obtained the ser- viees of Justice Morseil, who released them on security for a further hearing, The boy was caught with his hands in a gentleman’s pocket; but the _—— not wishing to Prosecute the boy, he was released. A Srravosr.—The proprietor of the El Do- rado house has exhibited to usa bird which he purchased in the Centre market. No one to know the bird and he took it to Patent Office, where be was informed that it was a Cormorant, a bird seldom met with in these parts. It is the intention of the owner to have it stuffed for preservation. Unfortu- nately the long feathers of the tail have been clipped, and this injures the appearance of the specimen. Cass Disuissep.—Yesterday afternoon a care was tried before Justice Morsell, in which W. Marshall was plaiotiff and Horatio Mary- man and others defendants. It was hard to determine if it were an assault case, assault and battery, kidpapping, perjury or defama tion of chezscter. The justice very patiently listened to all that was said, and j egecrsese the parties. The difficulty grew out of the aieing and reclaiming of a servant girl. eynolds, De; May, succeeded in roeatamy Goren ‘unk, Pepper Mouldin and Charles Bartlett, three young men who are accused of being concerned in the riot in which the reel of the Western Hose Company was destroyed. bros, Oneng held to security for a a hearing — Justice Drury. There are other yet to be arrested, and thi are on the trail of them, , —e. —— Wrman Acaix.—Everybody, oung and o! will be glad to learn that we pe emhoan remain during the present week, and give four more of his inimitable entertainments at Odd Fellows’ Hall. Itis best to g0 early to get good seats We looked in the other night, and that was about all we could do, so com: actly filled was the room. Next time we shall take an early start. Carree Marxer.—This morning our prin- cipsl market was crowded with dealers and purchasers, all in good humor, canvassing the quality of provisions and at times poking fun at each other om the result of t! lection in Baltimore. The prices are not materially al- tered since our last quotations, except fur ar- ticles becoming scarce. Tux Caszs of Mesers. Stoddard and Downing were heard by Justice Morsell and Birch and after a short consultation it was decided that the evidence was not sufficient to require bail for court, and the parties were dismissed. Favse ALaru.—Between 9 and 10 o'clock last night, some persons started an alarm of fire, for mischievous purposes, doubtless. Warcu Rarorxs.—Thos. Extensive arrangements have been made to insure a large gathering and a first rate time. The Democracy of that section are wide awake.
