—— eee eee LOCAL INTELLIGENCE, Rervrs ro Wierer Quarre: certain beings who endeavor to act the part of trae philosophers by making “a virtue of necessity.”” 4 to — house, and not Too sufficiently well of in cash to quarter at q regular boarding house—and not posessing such a respectability of appearance as would command an invitation to dinner !—they “liv: by their wits,’’ and, instead of finding faul' with their food, are glad to procure merel the means of subsistence from any source They do not turn up their noses at a smoked chicken or an overdone potato! | In the summer time, some of these ¢ for the benefit of their health, visit the coun- try—the pure air and the fresh fruits being — the rural attractions. They make their 3 in clover-fields or in barnhouses, an have the a to be aroused from thei slumbers by the music of birds—thus blend- ing the support of the animal with the love of the harmoneous rings of the feathered choristers. The few who remain in the city, Jess fond of nature’s orchestral arrangements, and being less poetic, resort to the lumbe: yards, converting the premises into huge chambers, and during the day take a siesta in the market-house or on some retired hill+ side Let politicians wrangle, and merehant¢ engage in stimulating traffic, these loafers ar indifferent They will live in laziness, and nobody can reform them from the errors o! their ways i Since the coming of cool weather, we noticd that a number of the ruralizers have return: to this city, und the first thing they did w: to call at the watch-house, where they have a kind of prescriptive right to the cells. There they obtain lodgings without expense, but gratuitous breakfast is not included in thé rules of that establishment! And here we may say, for the benefit of similar characte: yet abroad, that the stove has been put u; and the apartments comfortably heated. ‘ A Sas to the watch-house, an: moraing{ will afford an opportunity to see the rips tion of persons’ who Tesurt thither for’ thet? night's repose. t Nationa Tataree.—The final: concert of Strakosch’s company transpires to-night, whem Parodi—splendid, fascinating, whose name is the synonyme of enjoyment, and whose pres- ence is redolent of the spirit of melody—sings, as the prominent brilliant amongst a selection of vocal gems, our soul stirring national song; “ The Star Spangled Banner,’’ an effort whic awe gather from our exchanges throughout th country, has, wherever sang, evoked the un: mistakable applause of active sympathy. Ti- berivi, of whom a New York paper says, “ hé has no equal in the eoncertZroom,”’ announces several of the leading arias from the most opular operas Bernardi, Strakosch, and Prhitiant httle Paul Jullien, present other adieus in a programme which cannot fail of being remembered with abiding delight. Asgacur anp Barrery wits Intent rv Kitt —Yesterday, Officer Ross arrested two colored individuals, Wm Chase and Jam: Garner on the charge of aesault and batter: with intent to kill Poilip Hughes They we taken before Justice Hollingshead, who sent them to iail for trial, in two cases each, the December term of the Criminal Court. It appears that a number of colored persong have formed an association for the purpose of “ sitting up with the body’ when any of theit acquaintances have died. Hughes’s wife died, and this committee went to the wake, in the course of the night, the watchers bey came rather too noisy, and Hughes undertook to dismiss them, when the attack was mad on him, and his jaw broken in two places: ‘The chairman of the committee, or the “ Cap! tain,’’ as they call him, was not in a condition t restrain them. SeREz4DE8—GO@D, BAD, AND INDIFFERENT. Many of our love-stricken musical amateurs have availed themselves of the fine nights, lately, to compliment their fair acquaintances by serenades. Some of these achievements have been performed in creditable style, but in too many instances, alas! the music hag been of that description which puts the teeth on edge, startles oe nervous, sets dogs to barking and children to erying, causes the neighbors to call the watch and kick up a row generally! We hear that in one instance the serenaded parties have expressed a particular desire that the serenade should not be rev ted. They consider the music a most grate ifying compliment and a treat of a high o > der, but in future would prefer to take the will for the deed, as there is a sick child ia the house. ‘ Pinx Coakuey, a black man, seems deter- mined to do his part toward supplying the por lice with business. No sooner out of a sera or out of jail, than he again conducts himse! in such a way as to cecasion a constabulary Visitation, and ® return to that biue-washed institution, from the windows of which a fing view is obtained of the scenery and improves ments in that neighborhood © This morning Pink amused himself by assaulting and bat- tering sumebody. He isnot a tetotaler. that’s certain. Officer Cooper arrested him, and he was committed to jail by justice Donn. An’ other policeman was at the time waiting te arrest Pink. incase he had been dismissed from the former chaage. ' For Requtsition.—The colored man Geo, Lee, who was committed to jail for a hearin by Justice Donn, was brought out for trial yesterday, and it was shown that he had been concerned in the robbery of a gentleman ig Montgomery county, Maryland, where he ob. tained $185 and asilver watch About ninetyé four dollars were recovered, he having dis. posed of the remainder Lee was committed to await a requisition from the Governor of Maryland. —_— Coroner's Inquest —Yesterday afternoon an tnquest held io @ house near the canal bee tween Fourteenth and Fifteeath streets west, over the body of acolored man named John Harris, who died suddenly yesterday. It was shown that be had been subject to homorrhage of the lunge, and from the appearance of the body it was believed that was the cause of death, and the jury returned # verdict accord> ingly. Dan Rice’s GREAT sHow will exhibit in this city to morrow and Saturday—for these two days only. “Daniel” is universally celebra ted for bis humor as a clown, while his troupe of equestrans and tumblers, gymnasts, ete , Astonish all beholders. In these dull times+ and as inhabitants of this metropolis are not in the rear of their neighbors while seckin for novelties —we can promise that “ Duniel” will be abundantly patronized. A SrILt !—Yesterday afternoon, near Jadgp Douglas’s resilence, a cart was upset by its havirg been drawn to a declivity by an im- prudent horze Tho boy-driver, of course, was notte blame Ie may, at the time, have ~ been employed throwing stones at bullfrogs The result of the damage was a broken shaft, and the bruising of the horse The load of wood was spilt, as may be supposed. Ma cicious Miscuar 4c —Barney Carroll was charged with maliciously breaking a cag- riage belonging to Peter Creagh. The evi dence was heard by Justice Donn, who dis- missed thecase Thos Welsh, for breaking in the door of Henry O’Shea’s house and threatening Mrs O'Shea, was held to bail for court by the same Justice. In rue Acoounr of the Agricultural Fair at Rockville, as taken from the Sentinel and published in yesterday's paper, we neglected to state that the fastest trotter upon the course on Thursday, the Ilth instant, was a sorrel mare, owned and driven by our worthy fellow-citizen, Wm. E Stubbs. She circled the track, upwards of 400 yards, in thirty-six seconds. — Tam FIRS? She © security for her appearance at court. The twain have ent quarrels which, as a family matter, might be tolerated; but as tobatteries the law interposes its veto, and very Properly. — Warcu Rerorxs.—The cells at the Central Station, last night, were occupied principally by lodgers; the only cases for —before ustice Hollingshead—were Lucius Culver, drunk in the street, workhouse sixty a Henry Simms, (eolored,) out after hours, dis- missed. GEORGETOWN CORRESPONDENCE. Grorgetown, Sept. 25, 1856. Quite an extensive revival of religion has been going on in the Methodist chureh at Ten- allytown under the pastoral charge of the Rey. Mr. Gotwalt. The altar is nightly thronged with seekersof religion, and the num- ber of converts have been quite numerous, Mr. Wm. Golding, a very respectable atd aged citizen of our city, and well known throughout the District, died yesterday morn- ing of an attack of paraly Frost in considerable quantities made its @ppearance this morning in and round about our city. We have never, in all our experience, seen so much betting upon elections as there is now going on Almost every knowing one you meet with, of all parties, seems to have some- thing to risk upon the result, or upon some particular State. The Democrats have been betting freely upon Maryland—that Fillmore will not carry four States, and against large odds w the final resuit. Mr. Joseph F. Birch had both of his hands badly burned last night, while saving one of his children from injary by fire. A lamp had been carelessly left sitti upon the floor, and as the child was passing by it, the flame was communicated to its outer clothing. Fortu- nately, however, its dangerous situation was discovered by Mr. B. to save it from any in- jary. ‘The four market continues rather inactive. There seems to be but little spesulative de- mand. Held at $675 for good standard brands. Wheat has slightly declined under the late foreign news. (iood red is selling at $1 30a$1 33, and white at $1 35a$1 40. Corn; white and yellow 56a53c. The packet schooner Fairfax, Captain Mott, which cleared New York sume fuur weeks since, reached Alexandria on Tuesday She is bound to F. & A H. Dodge, of our city. Heavy weather and head winds kept her so loog on theway. The schooner Norfulk Puck- et, Captain Bedell, bound to our city with a full cargo of guino, is also at Alexancr‘a. Spectator. Rowing tHe GauntLeT.—Several thousand cords of wcod on the Watertown and Rome railroad, N. Y, took fire last week, and a freight train had to rush through the flames ; the hands, engineers and firemen aboard were obliged to anak shelter in doors, or as best they could, while the train thundered through the fiery element. Escaps anp Return —A letter in the New York Herald, dated Havana. 1J0th inst., mon- tions a spirited but fruitless effort made by Chauncey and Winn, the American seamen, to escape from their confinement on the Isle of Pines. They were re-arrested and returned to prison after wandering for forty-threo days through swamps and woods.
