- Pl ™ EVENING STAR. LOGAL INTELLIGENCE. Tse Presipent’s Movunrep Gvarp hada fine psrade yesterday, accompanied by a band of musicians om horseback. The following is the programme of their operations: 1. At Cox & Hemmack’s they accepted an invita- tion to partake of the usual hospitalities. 2 At Georgetown College, they, by invitation of the faculty, visited the various points of inter- est in that institution 3 Then manuvred on the College green. 4. On their return, they went into Boulanger’s, where the worthy host set before them an aszortment of his cookery, including oysters served in evory style, birds, ete . with the trimmings annexed. 6. A snack at Flint’s 6 Manuvred upon Pennsylvania avenue, and went through their evolutions with much credit 7. Returning to their ar- mory they partook of a supper prepared by Lieut. Robert Teal. Speeches, songs, toasts and sentiments, and consequent g bumor, formed not the least interesting part of the proceedings ‘‘Washington’s Grave’’ was sung by the Quartermaster’s sergeant of the District regiment, Mr. King; and at about 9 o’clock, the company departed, highly delighted, as they could not fail to be, with their military and social performances. Isterestixg Rextics.—In the removal of the Franklin Engine house, some highly in- teresting relics have turned up in the shape of the various articles deposited under the corner stone of the building at the time of its erection. Among them is a printed copy of the constitu- tion of the company, signed by the officers and members. The names are nearly obliterated One name, however, that of the President of the Company at that time (Charles L. Colt- man) can be traced inthe faint and yellow ink lines The other articles consist of an almanac of the year 1328, published by Elliot, of this city, and which contains a list of the corporation officers of Washington at that time; and acopy of the National Intelligen- cer of July 15th, 1828, which contains a column or two from its exchanges upon the tariff ques- tion, and an article upon the same great ques- tion which is now convulsing the nation, ese articles were enveloped in a parchment blank ship’s clearance, end sealed in a leaden case. They will doubtiese be cherished by the Frank- lin as choice relics. A Fixe Iuprovemsxt.—During the past session of Congress an appropriation was made for the construction of a culvert in Judiciary Square, runaing through the ravine which bas for #0 many years served the pur; ofa drain, and the exposure of which to the solar rays bas had somewhat a deleterious effect upon the health of the neighborhood. The work has not only been commenced, but al- most completed, and the connection of the cul- vert nearly formed with that under E street north. But this is not the only improvement in that vicinity; the Square is being filled up and levelled, with the superfluous earth so plentiful in that neighborhood. We fondly anticipate the day when the jail shall be re- moved from its present location, which is any- thing but an ornament, and, as for use, has more than once been condemned by grand jurors as unsafe and badly ventilated. The Judiciary Square (on both sides of E street) should be handsomely enclosed with iron rail- ings and the grounds planted with shrubbery and trees. This is alike due to city embel- lishment and to the public health. Evvcationau.—If the rising generation shall not be well educated, it will not be in conse- yuence of the absence of good institutions of learning. In addition tothe admirable public b tem, our advertising columns (see the firet page of the Star) show that ladies and gentlemen, well known as in all respects com- peteat, give notice to the public of the respec- tive times of opening their academies, and colleges, and schools Besides these, there are many of which cur citizens generally know nothing; the teachers being behind the times in the matter of advertising. They have not iuvestmeuts in types and ink, and nuot ksow that a dollar thus spent ease the number of scbolars and bring vol into respectable notice. And so of dise, they who most patronize the printer realize rich returas. Dears or a Mcsician —Pasquale De Falco, a member of the Marine Band, died yesterd+y afternoon, at the Marine Barracks, from irju- ries received in an affray with two soldiers about two weeks ago. The deceased came to America from Naples come forty years ago, and up to within the last ten or twelve years was recognized as the beat trumpeter in the United States. For some five years he was attached to Ringgold’s celebrated battery. The funeral takes place at four o’clock, tc- morrow #fternooy, from the Marine Barracks, and from the imposing military and musica! display will doubtless have 2» immense at tendance. The two soldiers who were concerned with the deceased in the affray. whereby he !oet his life, are now in jail awaiting trial. A Kixp Orrice —We have often noticed the Gallantry toward Jadics in the omnibusses, practiced by all true gentlemen ; and yest>r- day we were witness to several acts of a lady, which are worth mentioning. She sat down near the door. A passenger who had ju:t stepped into the ‘bus lost his footing by the starting of the impatient horsez, which seemed to be tenacious cf their engagement to be at the western gate of the Capitol time. The lady, seeing his danger, at once | placed ber hand upon his shoulder, thus pre venting him from turning an involuntary back- ward somereet. Again, in the course of two mivutes, a procisely similar kind office was rendered by ber in the case of another nentie- man passenger. A Manixz, who came home in the United States sloop-of-war Vincennes, from Bebring’s Straits, died at the Navy Yard post on Thurs- day night of diseaee of the heart. and was buried yesterday at the Congreszional Ceme - tery. He was a Gerwan by birth, is said to have been in the corps over twenty years, and leaves several hundred dollars in cash, without any heirsthat are known We chanced to be Present at the funeral, and were much im- pressed by the military ceremony and dignity with which the remaine of this humble soldier were honored The coffin was draped in the. Mars and stripes, the drums wuffled. and bis comrades in full uniform, under the command of Sergeant McDona!d, the handsomest soldier we ever laid eyes on. He deserves a commis- sion. The religious services were well per- formed by Rev. Mr Morsell. Tinep or Setpigeixe. -Yesterday afternoon, while the President’s Mounted Guard were gong through their manuvres on Pennaylva- nis avenue, a high mettied horse suddenly dashed up an alley leading to C street, evi- dently against the wishes of the dragoon rider! t was at first supposed by sundry persons that this was a kind of rocket move- meat—a pyrotechnic of the military art. But Botso. The steed boarded in astable that way, and it being near tea time, he was hast- ening home. He had been on parade for sev- eral hours, had pranced to the music of the band, and was doubticss tired of soldiering. - Drowsen.—James Butler, a lad aged about seveu years, son of Mr. John Butler, of Wash- ington, was drowned on Wednecday evening, in the Putomee off Goodhand and Thompson’s ship yard Le was last seen on Wednesday afternoon, and was not seen or beard of until sterday morning, when his body was found ating in the river. Coroner Neale, held ap inqueet on the body and the jury rendered & verdict of “death from accidental drown- ing.” —Alexandria Gazette. ye t Conongr’s Jonies—Wuo Pars?- Of late — Corener’s juries, when discharged, have een instructed to luok to the levy court for their pay. But the money does not seem to be forthcoming, and those who have performed the disagreeable duties devolving upon them as jurors on coroner’s inquests, are naturally enough inquiring who is to pay them, when does pay-day come” by will you suffer all the ills of bed- kroaches, moths, ants, and every other rpecies naeets wheu Lyon's Magnetic Powder will eurcly rid your house of ali sush pestileuce. During tho short season now in Progress, the management has catered with unusual ability and taste, and we are happy to say, has met with a corresponding remu- nerat appreciation from the citizens of Washington. After two nights more of Miss Keene and her elegant troupe, we are to have the presentations of the refined and classic tableaux vivants of the Keller company, whose splendid living copies of the works of the great masters in painting and statuary, of both ancient and modern days, have been themes of the highest admiration and com- mendation In justice to the management and to the actor censured for the offensive expression of “ Still Waters Run Deep,’’ on Thursday even- ing, it is proper to state that a copy of the play has been shown us, in which the words complained of appear in thetext. It isa slang phrase which has a totally different significa- tion in this country from that it bas in Eng- land, where the play was produced, and there fore should have been omitted The actor, however, canuot be blamed for adhering to his text. Disturpine 4 Bart —Last night the ball of the S:ott Guards was given at Harmony Hall, and passed off finely, with one exception. About eleven o’clock a person became so dis- orderly that the assistance of the Auxiliary Guards was required to relieve the company of his presence. Watchmen Toomy and Seas- ford, in attempting to remove the disorderly person were iatettecred with by,others, but they finally succeeded in taking their prisoner to the guard-house. He was released on bail for a further examination Arrempr at Scrcipg—A man named Rich- ardson, living in the nighborhood of Fifth and K streets, made an attempt on his life, last night, by cutting his throat. Dr. Duhamel was promptly summoned and dressed the wounds, which, from present indications, -are not likely to prove fatal. Assavit —Last night a colored man made an attack on a gentleman on the street, and severely injured him by a blow on the head. He was arrested by an officer, but found means to escape from bis custody while waiting the arrival of a justice. Horsg Stearina. —A man, accused of horse stealing, was arrested by watchman Hilton, in the First Ward, a few nights since, and sent to jail for a farther hearing by Justice Drary. A meeting of the Printers’ Union was afterwards held, at which the invitation from the Typographical Society was received and a vote passed that the Union Unite with them at the inauguration. Mr. Douglas paused, and with a burst of feel- ing which sent a thrill to every heart, ox- claimed— When I see my own fellow-citizens and the women, and the children, willing and continuing to sit through a drenching torrent of water from the heavens to hear me tell them of the danger of our glorious Union, I feel now courage to go forth to battle for our common safety.’ Even as he spoke, the cloud passed away auda a ray of sunlight fell upon the speaker. © pauzed again, and raising his band towards the sun, exclaimed—“ See my friends the cloud has passed away and heaven smiles once more upon us and our cause.” Oh! the shouts that rent the air—the effect was electrical. ; MARRIED, On the llth instant, by the Rev.
