OUR WEEKLY. the weekly Star of to day and read the capital stories headed “The —- Cave,” by Charles Dickons, and ‘The Family,” by x wast quantity and arity of Washington the usual quanti vai of Was! news and Trap, eal, personal, political, and noral news, poetry, fun, sentiment, ete., ete. Brice. $1 25 per year ; single numbers 3 cents. Taz Merrororiran Steam Frovriee Mirus. Our readers will have noticed the im appearance latterly of the open ground to the west of Twelfth street in the neighborhood of Ohio avenue, heretofore covered with puddles of green water, and sacred to geese, and guano, but now, as if by a magician’s wand, convert- ed into a business quarter, all alive with the movements of workmen, buzz of ma- ehinery, and the m of vehicles con- yoying wheat corn, flour and meal, to and from the extensive flouriog establishment of Messrs Coltman and Duncanson, which bas just gone into operation at that point. The main building of this establishment looms up, 8 prominent feature of the neighbor- hood. It is of brick. four stories high, forty- two feet wide, and forty seven deep. Attached to it isa two-story brick building, the upper part of which is occupied by water-tanks snd a shop for repairs, and the lower part as the engine-room 7 Entering the latter, we find a superb Paes are engine from the manufactory of Ellis z Brother, of sixty-five orseventy horse power, with a cylinder of sixteen inch diameter and three feet stroke ; and passing along we come upon the primary motive power in the sha of three immense boilers forty feet in length, and three feet in diameter. Stopping to con- verse a moment with the sweating athletic fire man, as be busies himself feeding huge lumps of Cumberland coal to the ravenous farnaces, he tells us that the consumption of coal is now about four tons per day, but will be leas as the machinery gets in a5 running trim Returning to the main building where men are pouring corn into a large Fairbank’s seale « feeder,’’ and taking a pinch, from the belts, of the ee corn-meal hess ingers to test its quality, we g some stairs anne six run of baritone ae for wheat and two for corn—are in operation, under the experienced superintendence cf the miller— Mr. J. Smith, Inte of the Alexandria and Georgetown mills Mr Smith, who is a wholesome, ruddy look- ing personage—just our dear ideal of a mil- Jer—takes us over the building, up stairs and down stairs, and into all manner of odd cor- ners, and amongst all sorts of gearings, belts, and curious looking machinery, toshow us the varions ingenious appliances and improve- ments for cleaning and grinding wheat and corn, The mill, we are told, bas capabilities for turning ovt some two hundred barrels of flour per day, and it is intended to furnish a very superior article, indeed. Our idea is, after examining the premises and the samples turn- ed ont, that the expectations of the enterpri sing proprietors will be fully realized, and that the flour and meal bearing the Metropol- itan Mills brand will be esteemed as irdispen- sibles by our merchants, shop-keepers, ani citizens Excursion To THE Great Fats —The Highlanders have hit the nail om the head in going up-river instead of down. In view of the many attractions of river and mountain seenery in the Great Falls neighborhooa, our wonder is that exeursionists do not oftener seek for good times in that direction. Wedo not believe there is on the American continent finer scenery than is to be met on the Potomac above Georgetown, where the noble river skirts the abrupt precipices of the Virginia shore. All the way up to the Great Falls, in- deed, the spectator is presented with a suc- cession of most enchanting views Arrived at that point. if there is anything in nature which can exceed the Falls in grandeur, it is the sublime white perch caught fresh from the water, end cooked on the spot! Then there are romantic walks for the young lovers and poetic folks; and as for matter-of fact peo- ple, why they can gratify themselves by con- templating the most extensive water power (Niagara excepted) in all creation! Some- times young folks are not averse to dancing on these excursions, and to provide for just such a contingency, Esputa’s Band has been secured. The very thought of such an excur- sion makes us young again Tar Avrewn Session or THe WASHINGTON Acapesres axp Scnoors. —That momentous time, in anticipation of which so many little hearts are beating high with hope and ambi- tion, “the Fall term,”’ is now rapidly .ap- proaching, and all good boys and giris*are doubtless hunting up their grammars, alge- bra, euclids, dictionaries, and all the other Tequisite books, and are posting themselves upin advance for thecoming tasks In our evlumns to-day will be found a large number of advertisements of schools and their time of epening The city of Washington presents many advantages for the training of youth ‘The schools are of a high character; the city is undoubtedly the healthiest, al! things con- sidered, in the Union—indeed its singular ex- emption for years from prevailing epidemics, North and South is notorious; it is a quiet rural city, with nothing of the uproar, dissi- pation and feverish excitement of a commer- cialcity The many valuable libraries and scientific collections to be found here, the Smithsonian Institute lectures, the genial and refined soci desirsbilities contribute to make this city a superior educational point. We recommend to our readers the schools advertised in to- day’s paper as presenting equal if not supe- rior advantages to any similar schools in the country. Crmminan Covrt—Tur TRriaLor Suiiivan. Mr. was followed yesterday by Mr. Mar- tin for defense. and to day Mr. Morgan closed for defense. The District Attorney being too unwell to make a closing address, the case was given to the jury about noon to-day upon the conclusion of Mr. Morgan’s plea The jury, after a few minutes absence, returned a vordict of “ not guilty.”” = Mach feeling was manifested in the court » Toom upon the rendition of the verdict, and the ou interview between Sullivan and his le was e-Mffecting in the extreme eta On Monday, the case of Eggleston, charged aoe the murder of Kohrman will be taken up. ‘i Gavin anv Su act -Last night officer Dough- 'y of the Fifth District police returned from iladelphia, having in his custody James avin and John Small who are charged with the robbery of Mrs. Mills’s boardiag house in the Fifth Ward. The prisoners were brought to this city in irons, and safely lodged in the county jail he police were so oxact in their description of the party, that they were recog- nized immediately on their arrival at the de- pot in Philadadelphia by officer Taggart, who made the arrest All the clothing, and a con- iderable portion of the jewelry have been re covered. Passes Por CoLtorep Persons —Colored persons who have business out after 10 o'clock DP. m are generally aware that tomake a pass good for one month it has been usual to have itendorsed by the Captain of the Guard. The ordinary pass from one point to another, good for the neght only, may, it is understood, be given by any respectable white citizen. Orpration —The interesting ceremony of ordainingjand installing a ruling elder accord- ing to the forms of the Presbyterian chureb, will occur on Sabbath evening in the Fifth street chureh. Col. ITEMS. Tho Fourth Ward Fremont and Dayton Ctub of Brookly, Headquarters at the Brook- lyn Museum, hoist the national emblem with the Union dowa. Mra Jane G@. Swischelm, the he femalo who, in 1551, disgusted the nation by her slanders on Daniel Webster, calling him a debauche » and a drunkard, and comparing bim toa large, thick-necked, volumtuous ‘‘r‘gger,’’ is out in the Tribune with a long letter of sympathy for Charlies Sumner. The Pennsylvanian says: The Fremont pa- pers are re-publizhing with cxultation the names of the four Fremont men, Taylor, Youngman, Duffield, and Wells, upon the Pennsylvania Fillmore Electoral Tiekct, and anumber of Fremont papers openly assert that thore are a number of other Fremont men upon the same ticket. Immense preparations are everywhere be- ing made for the grand gathering of the Do- moeracy and Old Line Whigs at the Tippo- canoe battle ground on the 3d of September. Large numbers of Kentuckians will be present, and to accommodate all who wish to attend, the New Albany and Salem railroad will be prepared to run extra trains and will ticket passengers through at half price.—Loursril//e Courier. At a recent political mecting in Genoa, Cayuga county, one of the speakers, a butcher and market man, named Rogers, said among other things, ‘‘ your Col Fremont ato dog!” Whereupon a voice replied, ‘‘he never ate half as much dog as the most of the people in this room !’’ “ Prove it! ’ exclaimed the ora- tor. Here a well known man arose, and with a victorious smile rejoined, ‘1 should not think you would ask any proof of a man who has made sausages for you as long as I have!’’ It is needless to add that this was a clincher, and that the point of Mr. Roger’s speech was rather blunted. For the last twenty five yeara Mr. Buchanan bas ranked among the ablest statesmen in the United States. This position has been award- ed to him even by his political opponents In 1848 Daniel Webster made a speech at Fan- euil Hail, Boston, in favor of the election of General Taylor. In commencing it he said : “Gentlemen, [ saw this morning a speech delivered lately in Washington by the present Secretary of State, Mr. Buchanan, a gentle- man who is amoug the first, if not the very first of his standing in the country. Differing from moat of the sentiments in his speech, I till do its author the credit and justice to say that it is a manly speech.” —_ i Coats, Pants, and Vests, Dress Suits, Business Suits.
