Ice has grown up to be an indispensible article of use, and blessed is the man (Tudor, we believe,) who first invented it, or rather adapted it to every- day use. We see it estimated that the domes- tic consumption of ice in the chief cities of the United States amounts annually to—New York, 300,000 tons; Philadelphia, 200,000 ; Boston, 60,000; Baltimore, 45,000; New Or- Jeans, 40,000; St Louis, 45,000; Cincinnati, 25 000; Washington, 20,000 ; Mobile, 15,000 ; Charleston, 15,000. Tue Monruty Report of the Captain of the Auxiliary Guard shows that to this date there have been one hundred and twenty persons confined in the central guard house and the lockup houses under hiscontrol. The farmers and gardeners are happy this morning, and de- clare that the rain was a blessing, indeed. Some damage was done to fences, signs, trees, &c., in and around the city by the wind. The lightning also struck the Odeon Building, but, it is supposed, owing the iron roof on it, that but a small portion of fluid passed down the chimney, ‘ing with it an immense quan- tity of soot and plaster into Shillington’s store, id stunning Mer. Henry Noyes, who was ear the flue. The shock must have been se- vere, as it knocked a lady down who was standing at a window opposite. The report that it struck and set fire to the engine house at the depot is incorrect, the fire that occurred there having been caused by sparks froma small engine. The sheds over the doors of the engine house were considerably burned, but the damage is not great Sux Srruck —Mary J. Vernon, a woman who had with her a child about a month old, fell yesterday on Seventh street, in the Seventh Ward, from the effects of the heat, and was carried into a house near by to be attended to. She is a stranger in this city, and is appar- ently a hard-working woman. Her situation excited the sympathies of ladies and gentle- men near, and they, with Officer Gill, made eo to secure a home and proper treatment for her. Joun Essax.—Mayor Magruder yesterday received a letter from the United States At torney for the western district of Pennsylva- nia, informing him that a man answering the description of John Essex was confined in the jail at Pittsburgh. Marshal Hoover imme- diately dispatched Mr. James Ward, of the jail guards, to Pittsburgh to identify the pris- oner Hucxsterixne witsour Licexss.— This morning, —— Freemun was arrested for huck- stering poultry, 4c , in the centre market without license. It was a case that required ement to prove the charges; but » not wishing to evade the Jaw, submitted bis case and srid that he was not aware that he was liable to a fine under the law. Justice Stevens ordered him to pay a fine and costs. A Capita Excursion —See in another column the announcement of the fourth an- nual excursion of the Montgomery Guards to come off on Monday next, August 4th. In past years the Montgomerians have managed their excursions with infinite success e believe the present one will leave all their ast ones a long es behind, judging from the inklings we get of their preparations, Hurrag ror tas Great FALLS AND THE Warer-Works '—The Butchers of George- town, (who, by the way, form a large body of active, intelligent business men) it will be seen, design giving a grand excursion on Mon- day next to the Great Falls and the Water- Works, in the packet boat M C. Meigs. They are bound to have a good time as well as their friends who go with them. Tar Heat.—According to Professor Meri- am, of Brooklyn Heights, New York, this 3lat day of July is the twentieth day of the pres- ent heated term. According to the Professor, and we “hav’nt a doubt o’ it,’ we have nothing on our records for sixty-eight years that equals the present heated term for inten- sity and long continuance of heat combined. Cruaxa, Court.—Wm. Lyons, burglary; four years in the penitentiary. Rich. Burns, indecent exposure; nine months in jail. Geo. Smith, et aed in jail for assault To-day, W. H. Taylor was convicted of falze pretences in two cases. A Wirtsess.—Officer King returned last evening from Leonardtown, Md., bringing with him Mr Charles Russell, a witness sum- moned for the defence in the case of Mr. Jar- hoe. Being summoned by order of the Court the expenses will be paid by the Government. Kitiep.—A breaksman on the down train of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was killed by lightning last night, near Martinsburg, Va., the train being at the time under fuil speed. Tae WixpMitu.—The buge windmill in the Seventh Ward, we hear, was struck last night by lightning and much damaged. Warcu Rervrns.—Juliana Closs alias Lou- wa Levy, Seese in for street walking, was sent to the workhouse for thirty days, I GEORGETOWN GORKESPONDENCE. Georgetown, July 31, 1856. Several very heavy storms passed over our city last night, accompanied by an unusual amount of thunder and lightning, and co- pious showers of rain fell. For several hours the wind blew (at times) a perfect hurricane, and we feared that some damage had been done, but as yet we hear of nothing more than the blowing down of a few shade trees, and the removal of a large corn-crib, on the farm of Mr. Britt, just north of our city, from its foundation. We regret exceedingly to learn that our townsman, Mr. Wm. 5 Goszler, bad one of his legs broken yesterday by a refractory horse, while on his way to the powder maga- zine. After the accident, he was brought into our city, and the broken limb set by Dr, C. H. Craigin. We have been informed, by good authority, that the water will not be let off the canal as has been announced The defective portion (a trunk on the nine-mile level) has been ex- amined, and found sufficiently secure, with some repairs, to accommodate the trade until the eneuing winter. We have been requested to call the atten- tion of the police to the old burying ground on High street. Numbers of youths, and sometimes men, are in the habit, especially on the Sabbath day, of congregating within the inclosure, and indulving in acts not only dis- reputable to themsc.yes, but very annoying and offensive to the neighbors. We advise these ieckless creatures to seek some less sol- emn place than this sacred repository of the dead to exhibit their entire want of every- thing like civilization and self-respect before — fall into the hands of the officers of the aw. We were requested, yesterday, by several persons, to call the attention of the proper Persons to the unlawful and somewhat danger- ous practive of throwing bones, potatoes, &c., about and in our market house during market hours. The throwing complained of is gen- erally aimed at an old colored woman, scem- ingly partially insane, and is done by the thoughtless for the purpose of having fun. Neverthelegs it is dangerous and ought to be stopped The new chapel (Episcopal) recently erected on South street is nearly completed, and will be opened for religious services a3 soon as the services of a suitable minister can be had It is a very neat affair, well finished, and furnished with about fifty comfortable pews of sufficient capacity to accommodate three hundred persons. r. They gave me an appetite, and restored a tone and vigor to my whole system. In one of the September numbers of my psper I related my exper!- ence of the good effects of the Bitters, siace which time they have had a large sale, and lave now become the standard medicine in this vicinity.
