The officer having him in charge had got him within a few feet of the magistrate’s office, where he fell upon the pavement and had several convulsions. He was relieved, and his friends took him away, but he had gone but a short distance when he was again seized with convulsions, and continued to suf- fer for a long time until he was taken to his home. Tae Fuaitive Ray.—In consequence of a telegraphic despatch received by Mayor Ma- ee from Mayor Hicks, of Baltimore, an- bouncing the arrest in that city on Sunday night of a man named John Ray, alias John Holmes, and who, it was supposed, might be the John Ray of the burglar gang, Marshal Hoover yesterday promptly despatched Mr. Ward of the jail to Baltimore to identify the prisoner. The Pre*ident laid before the Board a com- munication from the Mayor in relation to the accounts of the corporation with the Bank uf Washington, stating that, in order to meet urgent claims upon the Corporation. he had anticipated the revenue to the amount of five thousand dollars, and suggesting the passage of a law authorizing the further anticipation of the revenue to the amount of thirty thou- sand dollars. The President also laid before the Board a communication from J. L Henshaw, Eaq., in relation to a communication of the Mayor of the 23d inst ; which was referred, and or- dered to be printed with the proceedings of the Board. Drownxep.—A man, said to be a native of Ireland, was drowned on Monday at the bi, rock, in Rock Creek, between Twenty-seco a and Twenty-third streets. The body was re- covered yesterday. He was sitting upon the rock about noon on Monday, and had not been seen till the body was recovered. Fieutine.—A considerable crowd was col- lected yesterday, on Sixth street, by tho ar- rest of two drunken women, who had been fighting. They struggled to escape, and the officers had some trouble with them. The cases were disposed of by Justice Morgell. No Fira Workxs.—We learn that the Gov- ernment does not design furnishing any fire works on the coming Fourth, and as the city courcils have done nothing in that line, we presume that all the pyrotechnics got up on that day will be on private account. The exclusive right has been given for ninety-nine years to Mr. Farrer, a gentleman now in Liverpool, who has resided for many years in Costa Rica, authorizing him to levy rates giving 20 percent. on the outlay, the receipts per an- num being estimated at £9,706 and the ex nses at £7,006. Upwards of 2,000 shares ave been taken up already, and a contract for the construction of ten miles of the rail- way has been made. This portion of the line will extend from the port of Punta Arenas to the River Baranca.
