EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Aragst or Croooin ann Baitgy.—On Wed- nesday afternoon, Mr. James Ward, of the jail guard, with Police Officer Williamson and Constables Simonds, Wise, A. Allen, Busher, and Duvall, left the city by the three o'clock train, in seareh of the burglars They went as far as Ellicott’s Mills, and, finding no trace of the fugitives, returned to Beltsville esterday morning; after breakfastipg at ltsville, they proceeded to the house of a Mrs. Vermillion, a half-sister of Ray, about two miles this side of Beltsville, having learned that young Cross (aged about seven- teen) had gone out to Beltsville on the cars with a lar, bse! alles and had proceed di- Se he ermillion’s. While searchiag this house, Mrs. Vermil- lion raised a great out-cry, apparently in- tended to give the alarm to the fugitives lurk- ing in the vicinity, telling the officers at the top of her voice to go and arrest Nailor and not come hunting her brother, &c The officers, after going over the house, di- vided and proceeded to search the woods in the rear of the house. While scattered in this way over a considerable extent of ground, ficer Simonds came suddenly upon Croggin Bailey, and young Cross, who were seate playing cards, while Ray la} asleep near by, Croggin sprang up and presented a double- barrelled gun at Simonds, and asked what he came for. Simonds as that he came for him, Croggin then said, ‘‘ You had better go back; one man or two can’t take us, half s dozen of you may.” Ray, who had now awaked, also presented a double barrelled gun, and Simonds, whose pistol was not cap- ped, returned to his companions for assist- ance The officers now gathered, and a hue aan ery was raised throughout the country of white and colored, in pursuit of the fugitives who, finding their quarters getting too hot, decamped abruptly. Those in pursuit fol- lowed on their track some eight miles in Montgomery county, where the fugitives were nally lost traces of in a largeswamp. The Tast reen of them there, they were seated on a fence, keeping some colored people, who were following them, at bay, by presenting their double-barrelled guns at them This morning, about half-past 8 o’clock, Officers A R. Allen and R Dove. of the Auxiliary guard, and John Davis, Chief of Poliee, went to the house of E.G Cross, on Fifteenth street near K, and there discovered and captured Croggin and Bailey. Bailey ailowed himself to be taken without opposi- tion, but Croggin showed fight, using a pair of tongs upon the head and face of Allen, cutting and bruising hima good deal. Ho also managed to give himseif a pretty smart blow over the eye with his own weapon, in the course of the scuffle. Croggin and Bailey are now lodged securely in jail, and, if it is found necessary, wiil no doubt be heavily ironed. We have just seen them in theircell. They say they have at no time been more than twelve miles from the city, and that they have laid in the woods at night. They would have made their way to some seaport but for the want of money. On Wednesday morning, when Deputy Marshal Phillips, with Waugh and La Prutte and F. Ward, guided by Moore, were searching the corn-house cn Vermillion’s place the prisop- ers say they were concealed under the corn- house, and that Croggin had his double-bar- reled gun directed through a hole in the floor cocked. ready to shoot Moore, but that Bailey caught hold of the gun and said “for God's sake don’t fire or we shall all be hung!” Bailey says he gave up all hopes of escape when he found Phillips and La Truite so close in pursuit They (Ray, Croggia and Bailey,) made their way tu the city last night, it seems, in despair of escaping through the country after the people had been so generally aroused in pursuit oo much credit cannot be given to the oficers who made the arrests, nor to the of- ficer who ferreted out the fugitives from their We must not omit either to hiding place give credit to Marshx! Hoover for the inde- fatigable energy with which he has pursued For pearly two weeks he has had, mainly at his own expense, some eight or ton persons en- gaged right and day in the search. We be- lieve that during his marshalsbip not a single successful escape has been made from the the search for the ezeaped prisoners jail Ray, who contrived in the melee at Cross’s to get away, is sure to be found ard returned to his old quarters. It is stated that this despcrate gang of burg- lars, at the time of their detection, had the keys all prepared to make an entry into the money department of the Treasury building Bailey, it will be remembered, was at one time a watchman or messeng2s at the Treas- ury. Tae Comutse Fovrta.—The National An- niversary is close at hand, and yet we sea no announcement of any civic celebration of the We ion here on that day, sufficiently attractive to draw our neigh- bors to Washington, and we doubt not they ‘would gladly avail themselves of the occa- Tustead ef that we shut up shop on that otherwise to make the city v mmfortable, that our own citizens flee from it in every direction, as if it was plague-stricken. They go to Baiti- Harper’s Ferry, spend the y pestilent whisky vended in that ancient and fish like burgh, and return home in a most discredit- able state of inebriety. All this could easily be remedied by getting up a handsome cele- day as there undoubted: should be. ovght to have a demonstr sion. day, and continue So uninviting and un more, the White House, ney Point, or worst of all, the day at Alexandria, imbibing the bration of our own, and not ovly would the morals of the people be thereby kept ina healthy condition, but the corporation would savo some thousands of dollars at home, which is now spent elsewhere by our citizens in their search for amusement. City Fathers (at least) vote us some fire- works? It is estimated that the city of Bos- fon clears some seventy-five thousand dollars every ‘*: Fourth,” over and above the outlay, made in furnishing the people with a fine show of fire-workson BostonCommon. Can we not take a hint from these shrewd Boston Yankees, and continue to celebrate the day in a manner which shall be satisfactory to our patriotism and at the same time bring money here in- stead of sending it away? at the peo- villages as Minitary Foxgrac —Yesterday fternoon, the Washington Light Infantry, Capt. Davis testified that Mr. Allen, Mr. Dove and himself, caught Croggin and Baily at Crom’s house, one sages ~ premi- ser, the other to escape from them. Wm A. nen testified that Cross admitted that Croggin and another person were at his house the night they escaped from jail; and that Ray, Croggin and Baily were very fre- quently there previous to their first arrest. Jobnson Simonds stated that a son of Mr Cross was with the gang in the woods near Beltsville yesterday, and that he said he had brought them clothes. John Wise corroborated the statement of Simonds. Amon Duvall stated, that after the party divided he met Crose’s son and told him he was doing wrong to be there with those fel- lows; Cross said he did not know he was doing any harm; Duvall told him he could be ar- rested for it, and if it were not that he was i. pursuit of the others he should do it any Ow. bi The evidence here closed, and Justice Hol- lingshead required the — to give bail in the sum of $1,000 each to appear at court, and in default of that amount of bail he com- mitted them to jail. The elder Cross keeps a public house and qmall grocery on Fifteenth street, near K, and is apparently between 55 and 60 years old. The younger was a member of the Auxiliary Guard under tex foe Birch, when Nailor, Ray, Croggin, and Bailey were first arrested. We have rarely ever ceen our harbor pre- sent @ more lively appearance than it has during the last few days. The number of vessels, mostly large class schooners, receiving and discharging cargoes of flour, grain, fuel, granite, marble, coal, merchandise, &0., has been a subject of general remark. Indeed so great was the number at one time that pretty much the entire approachable water front from the Swanton coal docks to Morgan’s mill, near Lapy’s sage was completely lined. It has demonstrated not only that Bronchitis, Asth- ma, Catarrh and Granular Sore Throat may be permanently cured, but that Consumption in all its stages isacurable disease, and that the direct application of remedies, by means of inhalation, the seatof the malady, instead of giving them by the stomach, (always over- taxed and delicate in these diseases.) must here after be regarded by the profession as the oey rational and scientific mode of treatment. ‘arties unable to visit the city may be treat ed by correspondence—medicines, inhaling instruments, &c , being sent to them by ex- press.
