It must be close by. Step on the long and find it.’ ““*Hold my gun,’ replied one of ’em, and passing it to one of bis friends be stepped upon the log and began to walk rightto where I was. Now didn't I equat low and fee! mean? Buthush; he hadn’t got far before another must jump on to help him find tho boat. This last one had only walked a few steps, when the log slipped, and splash it came right into the river with the two Ingens. They both held on, though they got a little wet, and the first thing 1 know!d the log was going out into the stream with all three of us onit. It wa: nting at first, and slipping, got pushed off. Those on shore set up a loud laugh, and they wouldn’t hear — until it was too late to give anyhelp. Butforthose ou the log it was no joke; for they were al- ready out in the stream, and going down it with a smart current “‘ They row halloved manfally for help, and those on shore seeing how it was, told them to hold on, and that they might find the boat and take them off. [ concLusion TO-MORROW. } A Sxaxe Compat.—Combats between the rattle and black snake are certain if they meet, and the black snake is, with rare ex- ceptions, the conqueror Upon seeing each other, these animals instantly assume their respective attitudes of defiance, and display the great difference in their organization. The rattlesnake coils itself up, ready for at- tack or defence ; the black snake being a con- strictor, moves about from side to side, and is in constant activity—naturally exciting each other’s passions. The rattlesnake finally set- tles down into a glowing exhibition of ani- mosity, its fangs exposed, its rattlesin constant agitation. The black snake seemingly con- scious that the moment of strife has come, now commences circling round its enemy, ab- solutely moving so swiftiy that it seems but a gieam of dull light; the rattlesnake attempts to follow the mvvement, but soon becomes confused, and drops its head in despair, then it is that the black snake darts upon the back of its deadly foe, seizes it between its teeth, and springing upwards envelopes the rattle- snake in its folds. The struggle, though not long, is painful; the combatants roll over in the dust, and get entangled in the bushes, but every moment the black snake is tighten- ing its hold, until the rattle snake gasps for breath, becomes he! plessand dies. For awhile the black snake still retains its grasp; you can perceive its muscles working with energy; but Enally it cautiously uncoils itself, and quietly betakes to the water, where recover- ing its energy, it dashes about a moment, as if in exultation, and disappears from the scene. We Die Daity.—The bodies of animals are continually undergoing a series of invisible changes of substance. of which they are en- tirely unconscious. We look at our hand to- day, as we write, and we fancy it is the same in substance as it was yesterday, or last year; as it was ten years ago. The form of each finger, of each nail, isthe same Scare made in our infancy are stillhere Nothing is al- tered or obliterated; and yet it is not the same hand. It has been removed over and over again since the days of our youth. The skin, and flesh, and bone have been frequently oved and replaced. And so it is, more or less, with our whole body. The arms and limbs that sustain us in our school-boy strug- gles are long since consigned to the dust, have perhaps lived over again in plant, or flower, oranimal. In from three to five years the ent body is taken out and built in again with new materials. A eontinued activit prevails among the living agencies to whic this hidden work is committed. Everyday a smal! part is carried away; just as if a single brick were every day taken out of an old wall, or a single wheel out of a watch, and its place supplied by another. The body, there fore, requires constant supplies at every pe- riod of its life, of all those things of which ite several paris are built. Tre Uses or Tis —The uses of tin have become curiously diversified of late years The metal is so ductile thatitcan be rolled out into sheets of tin foil as thin as writing paper. It is now much used for covering tobacco, for coarse gilding, for what is called silvering looking glasses, and for bronsing powders Peroxyd of tin is used by jewellers as-a polishing material, and fused with glass it forms a white opaqusename!l. It is much used, mixed with copper to form various use- ful alloys of metal, such as gun metal, the specula for te'escopes, the bearings for shaft ing, the bronze of statues, and was used by the ancients for swords, spears and armor— tempered by a process now lost to the arte. Block tin is struck by dies into various vessels for drinking, such as cups, tea and coffee pots; and mixed with a little oe fe to give it hard ness, it forms the beautiful brittania ware. A Toucutne Dirty in Prose.—When Seth gt home from mackereling, he sought his arah Ann, and found that she, the heartless one, had found another man. And then most awful tight he got, and so he went away, and bound himself to go and cut live oak in Flor- ida. He pined upon the live oak lands; he murniured in the glades ; his axe grew heavy in his hands, all inthe wild wood shades. Mosquitoes bit him everywhere, no comfort did e get; ah! how terribly he'd swear whenever he'd get bit. At last despairing cf relief, and wishing himself dead, he went into the woods apiece, and chopped off his Thus died poor Seth. So saith Bullfrog. ead Cumsme Roses —Climbing roses are ad- mirably adapted for covering walls, trellises, old trees, unsightly buildings, 4c., or even for decorating the most palatial residences. Among them the prairie roses take the first rank—the rapid growth, perfect hardiness, luxuriant foliage, inmense clusters of b fal flowers, and their protracted blooming, commend them at once to every one who want a splendid climbing rose with which to orns- ment their dwellings What is known as the Ayshire rose, from their slender growth, are, properly speaking, running roses, and are re markable for growing and flourishing in the poorest soil. They are so thrifty that they will run twenty feet in a single season. —Bu/- Salo Republic ti- one d Wormwoov.—At @ dinner pa: certain knight whose character was consider- ed to be not always unexceptionable, said he would give them a toast; and looking hard in the face of Mrs. ——, was more c rated for wit than beauty, gave: ‘*Hovest men an’ bon ; py lasses.’ “ With all my heart, Sir John,” ssid Mrs M—, “for it neither applies to you nor me.’’ ‘You may talk to me,” ssid an old snaker, “about your export and your import— you may speechify sang hi ir ge — od as a dusty snow-b: , of re; and so] you ahaa ontil the soles of your booteand ~ is t ‘a govewine old port, double X brand; them’ 2 8 of your body ed out, concerning ‘kish 7Pabs A ge coer but give me sort for me.
