Be sure to give us a call before making arrangements elsewhere. SPIRIT OF THE MORNING PRESS. The Intelligencer says of Mr. Fillmore’s letter accepting the Know Nothing presiden- tial nomination : “Tf any shall be disposed to doubt the pru- dence of Mr. Fillmore’s acceptance of the nomination in the present distracted condition of parties, they must concede to him the merit of disinterestedness. All candid men will accord to him, also, entire sincerity in claim- ing for himself a scrupulous regard for the rights of every section of the Unien, for this was a distinguishing feature in his adminis- tration of the Government. Well aware how generally the whige will dissent from the favor which he svows for the genera! objects of the party which nominated him, we may never- theless say that it will be fortunate for the country if the successful candidate, whosoever he may be, shall carry imto the Presidency so national and so conservative @ spirit as has always been evinced by Miliard Fillmore.’ The Union comments on the sudden conver- sion ef the New York Herald to Republican partyism, which is simply amusing, as evinc- ing Bennett’s entire want of principle. The same paper quotes the opinion of the Boston Courter upon the speech of Senator Butler, alleged by Senator Sumner to have afforded just ground for the vein of blackguardism and vituperative personal abuse that ran through his speech, that has become famous owing tothe Brooks affair to which it gave rise. The Courier characterizes it (Butler's Speech) as a great intellectual effort, remark- able for its dignity and the respect manifested throughout it for Senatorial comity and statesmanlike propriety. In publishing the whole of the speeeh of Senator Butler the Bos- ton Cewrier has enabled its readers to com- prehend the fact, at a glance, that Senator Sumuer’s allegation that B.’s effort called for such a reply as he essayed to make to it, is ut- terly without foundation in truth. The Union also quotes from the testimony of Dr. Corne- lius Boyle, of this city, before the House In- vestigating Committee, to show the sheer humbuggery of the pretenscs of the Republi- oan press that Mr. Sumuer was seriously hurt by Mr. Brocks. Before that committee Dr. Boyle said : “I have seen no medical man with him but myself. There hasbeen nonethere There are ® great many frienis present, and they make Mr. Sumner out « great deal worse than he is. They say he hasa fever. I have never discovered any. I have been his constant at- tendant, and I have never known his pulse at any moment higher than eighty-two. I yesterday corrected an article in the Intelli- gencer stating that he had a fever, and the correction appears in to-day’s paper. He has no fever to my knowledge. I have visited him twiceaday. His brother said he ought not to come out, and cited a great many cases that had come under bis observation in Paris, where death had taken place in six weeks from blows on the head. His brother is not a medical man. Senator Sumner, of course, took the advice of his brother and his frends, and I, of course, allowed them to do 2s they SS Perhaps I ought to state my reasons for objecting to his coming out on Fri- day. There was a good deal of excitement at that time, and I te that, ?f Mr Sumner did not go into the Senate for a day or two, the excitement might wear off.” Again: “I think this: that Mr. Sumner might have taken a carriage and driven as far as Baltimore on the next day without injury.’’ It is well known here that Senator Sumner is kept housed for political effect only, and. that the half-hourly bulletins concerning the desperateness of his condition that are flying over the non-slaveholding States per tele- graph, are simply so many “shrieks” for ‘Freedom in Kansas;’’ or, rather, to make Republican party political capital.
